E poi i Comandanti, i Custodi.
Riuscirà a scappare o verrà punita?

I firmly believe that this is the most beautiful and disturbing book I've ever read.
"The Handmaid's Tale" is a dystopian novel, or rather describes an imaginary and frightful society. Set in the United States, the country becomes a fundamentalist theocracy. Everything is regulated by the Bible and women suffers the most in this new state of play. Women like the protagonist, whom we don't know the real name, are deprived of their money and assigned as Handmaids, with the only function of procreate. Their main duty is getting pregnant with their Commanders and bearing children for the Wives. Every person in the hierarchy has their own duty, and so there are the Wives, the Marthas, the Aunts. And men are Commanders and Guardians, among the others.
The reader enters in this world and little by little realizes the absurdity. The final is open, we don't know what is going to happen to the protagonist. Will she save herself or be punished? The world will be saved? An answer might come from the epilogue, "a partial transcript of the proceedings of the Twelfth Symposium on Gileadean Studies", on the occasion of a conference when the recordings of Offred are discovered and studied.
But what makes this book so disturbing is that... it might happen for real. How much time we watched at the newcast stories of lives in countries where the fundamentalism has got the power? People's life is under strict control, women struggles the most, there is no more place for freedom and glee.
We would really need this book to be read in all schools, form a common consciousness that prevents this from happening. That certain absurdities do not become real.

After around one year friends gave me this book as a present, I've finally read it. Why did I wait for so long? Because, about Murakami, I had a wrong preconception, that stopped me to read it. I thought it was more "transcendental", more philosophical, more "zen".
The world of 1Q84 is a parallel world. A kind of dystopia, a world where strange and scary things happen. A world where a goat, a girl and the dead body of a man with a deformed head become passages for Little People. A strange world. The connection between 1984 and 1Q84 are Aomame e Tengo. She is an impassive incognito murderer, and in the normal life a personal trainer in a gym for rich people in Tokyo.
He is a former promise in sports thanks to his strong body, now teacher of Math in a preparatory school and aspiring novelist. Twenty years before, an hand tight between two kids changed their lives. Twenty years later, the searching ends. But trials and hard times wait for them.
A thick book. A lot of things inside, a lot of references to literature, classical music. And then spying. And writing.
More than the two main characters, many perfect characters. The old lady, the special Fukaeri, Mr Komatsu, Tamaru, the Leader.
I must admit. I thought about rate this book 4 stars instead of 5. Because the love story looks so much banal. But at the end their love, that passes over the time, is acceptable. In a parallel world, where two moons shine in the sky, even this kind of love can find its own place. My cynicism is here, because it's pretty difficult for me to believe in a love without seeing each other for twenty years, but feeling a firm certainty that sooner or later they are going to meet each other at the right moment. In other words, an illogical love. But this love is right in the year 1Q84.
Right now, I need to read something more earthly. The rarefied air of this book can go to my head. Coming back to the planet Earth, as we know it.

Sottilmente ironico.
Per ora, uno dei miei preferiti.

As reborn Robinson Crusoes, the crew and the passengers of a Trident airplane, flied out by Tokyo and direct to Australia, crash down in a desert island. Maybe it's not so desert, because in the hinterland a civil war is underway. But our heroes are far from everything threatening. At the beginning it's pretty difficult, but then life in the island becomes more and more comfortable and easy. Thanks to everyone's specialization, and hospital and a pub are set up, everyone has its own cottage. There is a lot of food, men and women are in open relationships. Heaven, in other words.
But then, slowly, rises the idea of not coming back anymore, and in case they are found, not giving that permission. Why would they want to pay taxes, earn a meager salary, in a cold weather, instead staying in a tropical and comfortable island, a kind of heaven, more socialist than any other socialist place in the world?
Paasilinna's novels are so recognisable. Subtle humour, visionary environment. A contact with nature always present, a typical Finnish pragmatism in life's organization. This is the book, among the other ones I've read by this author, more openly critical in the Western world. Of course, critical as he knows how to do. Finely ironic.
For the moment, one of my favourites.

I've never had any, but if someone has any doubts about J.K.Rowling's talent (ops, Robert Galbraith), this novel is another proof. I can't help myself to stop reading it, I wanted read it more and more, I've read half book just in one day.
Owen Quine, a (not so much) successfull writer, disappeared by ten days when his wife Leonora calls on the detective Cormoran Strike. Initially, the case seems easy. An eccentric writer who wants to hide himself. Strike goes in close contact with the London literary world, unresolved people and evil persons everywhere. But a macabre finding will change the game.
A novel set in the literary world, a world that Mrs Rowling knows very well. Who knows if then, in a game of memories, anyone of the fictional writers is the image of real-writers. Only questioning her we'll have the answer.
What I can say is that the novel is beautiful. No ifs, ands, or buts. Compelling, catches you, drags you. Maybe a little macabre in some pages. More space takes the character of Robin, assistant of Strike. His counterpart at all, he is rude as she is beautiful and kind, but with the same insight and the same capacity. A perfect match.
I cannot do anything but wait for the next novel by Robert Galbraith.
But I'm also waiting for the next novel by Mrs Rowling... she is fantastic.

A public library is the most democratic thing in the world.
What can be found there has undone dictators and tyrants: demagogues can persecute writers and telle them what to write as much as they like. but they cannot vanish what has been written in the past, though they try often enough...
People who love literature have at least part of their minds immune from indoctrination. If you read, you can learn to think for yourself.

Molto molto carino.

In the life of all of us there are bad-hair days. I dare say it happens almost every day. What it can completely change the situation is how we relate to time. And that's why I started reading this book.
Gretchen Rubin is married with two daughters, a demanding job. Everything would have to be at least serene, but she doesn't feel happy. That's why, with practical action, she decided to start her own "Happiness Project". Each month she will be devoted to develop a "happiness". Well, after a year, Rubin says "happier". What happened?
She dedicate herself to spending more time with her friends and families, to be more focused in the things that give her lightness, to exercise a happy heart. And no, she didn't retire to a hermitage in Tibet or whatever. She gave more attention to being herself, to understand what makes her happy, what are those little things that can improve her life. She changed life without changing life.
At the end of the book, a number of suggestions to start our own "Happiness Project".
What I loved about this book was not wanting to stand as the guru of happiness. No magical recipe, no distortion. Rules dictated by common sense, little tricks that every human being can implement. And a heart prepared to change. A small light of happiness in the publishing world. Very very nice.

One of the most common answers to the question "What was the happiest day of your life" is: "The day of my wedding." The happiest day in the life of Sebastiano Mauri will be when he can finally dream of his wedding. Right now, in fact, Italy is still one of the countries where a homosexual couple cannot marry.
I (and Sebastian) find no reason why we should oppose. By heterosexual, I don't see why people who have had the good fortune to meet a person who loves and with whom they want to build a life together, should not be able to get married. For children, then, my position is clear: "I do not want to, but if anyone wants them, their business!"
I would call this little book "a letter", addressed to Italians. In polite and ironic tone, you will find an accurate answer to all possible reasons why not to agree. My favorite chapter is the one that imagines a possible moving of homosexual people and all their past and present works in a separate area of the world. Well, I assure you that the land would be severely impoverished.
It's intelligent, ironic. I recommend it. Even to find a (not so) little background of the pope...

Finito in pochi giorni.

This novel was yet another confirmation that, when I leave a book for a while, when I take it I finish it in a few days. It began in March, left for a while and now... Finished in a few days.
Another thing I often do is go looking for more information on the book and author on Wikipedia. You will understand that I don't do it before because of any spoilers. Well, the story of this book is very sad. In fact, these were the last pages written by the author before being deported to Auschwitz as a Jew. The novel, in fact, should have been longer, but could not complete it.
The two parts of which it is composed are very different among them. The first tells of the flight of Parisians from their city under attack. We can see the differences of the various social classes in dealing with the moment. The rich bourgeois like Perichauds, the intellectuals, the young workers as the Michauds. The goodness and strength of the small against the meanness and cunning of the rich. The second part tells about a small French village where German soldiers are settled. Slowly the latter enter into the lives of the inhabitants, but there will never be true friendship. Among Lucille and Bruno could be a lovestory... But the divisions are an insurmountable obstacle.
The book is really nice, scrutinizing the mind of several people in a climate of war, in the face of adversity, when everyone is really himself. I wish we could read the other pages... Another small thing compared to the millions of lives that the Second World War has taken away.

One of those books always present in the lists of books to read in a lifetime. Well, I've read it. What do I think? That...
Holden Caulfield has just been chased by the Pencey, because his academic performance was unsatisfactory. I just cannot call it a nice character. He's only 16 years old, doesn't understand what he wants from life and from himself. Misogynist, a liar and a chronic slacker, good at getting great mental movies of what he might do. The only people who seem not to despise are Ally, his brother died years before, his little sister Phoebe and Jane Gallagher, a girl he barely knows and who would like to call for the whole novel... What in the end he doesn't.
In short, it is the story of a bully who poses as a tough, but it's really just a boy. But perhaps, we were all young Holden, a bit lost, with the need for a Professor Antolini that give us something to think seriously.
I spend just a word about the originale title, untranslatable in Italian. When Phoebe, perhaps the most mature of the two, asks him what he wants to do, Holden replied that would be "The catcher in the rye" for kids who are playing in a field of rye in the shelter of a cliff. Actually, wrong line of the poem by Robert Burns, speaking to someone who comes and who does not take the fly.
Probably Holden needs this: someone to go to him and teach him to stand up, not taking him when he falls.

You know what? These reviews are always the opportunity to truly understand a book, to understand what you really think. I understand why the Rye is a classic. But I cannot stop myself finding Holden extremely unpleasant.

Forte. Bellissimo.

It's always difficult to even begin a review of a so rich and important book. The autobiography of Simone, divided into four volumes, falls into this category. I saved so much food for thought, I have marked so many things to say. Probably you would do before reading the book directly that reading this review. But I want to be able to give an idea of the great intellectual effort contained in this third volume.
First the title. Simone has more or less 35 years at the beginning of the book, and 55 at the end. She feels time passing. She feels the weight of years, of experiences. And she realizes that there are things that go beyond human control. History, time, death, seeing these extraneous forces against which he can not fight anymore. The force of circumstances takes over.
Her relationship with Sartre is a thread that does not ends, their intellectual understanding continues forever. Although other stories with other men, Lanzmann and Algren, whom The Mandarins is dedicated, the association with Sartre didn't stop. And together they will be strongly engaged in criticizing French policy in the war of liberation of Algeria, the battle that will bring them into conflict with their own country and to suffer even some attacks. Together they will travel to Cuba, where Castro took power, and in Russia. But throughout the book it is studded with reports of trips to various parts of the world: in Italy many times, in Black Africa, in China and Brazil, where they are accompanied by Jorge Amado.
Historically, the volume is between the end of World War II and the mid-sixties. The world and life are reborn, finally the days resume their course.
Literarily, are the years in which she began to draw her autobiography with the release of the first two volumes, and especially the years when she wrote her masterpiece, The Second Sex. Next, an extraordinary novel like The Mandarins.
But the literature of this period became insignificant, without any meaning and without a relationship neither with the author, who puts nothing of itself, nor by the society in which they form. It tells nothing about the present time.
Two figures are in this book, including all the various names of authors and titles of books she reads: Virginia Woolf and Ernest Hemingway. About Virginia she says that she has read the diary and wants to deepen some aspects. She defines her extraordinary and solitary. Pages later, she recounts the meeting with Maurois, who had met her. She hoped to learn something, but the conversation did not go ahead. About Hemingway instead it is a bit more complicated. While admiring some of his stories, she sees in his novels an too "macho" and individualistic attitude, a man too sure of himself and of his power, the rich master who goes hunting with other rich masters, and to guides, servants and the Indians have a "naive paternalism". He "painted and exalted the world of privileged men."
I want to end this review with a rich brief mention about two breaks, detachment of the book: the Intermezzo and Epilogue. The Intermezzo is critical to understand the way of writing of Simone. In volume, it is located after the release of The Mandarins, and this is its purpose: to explain how to write, what's her way of working and what differentiates writing a novel and an essay. In the Epilogue, however, she takes stock of his life. Her relationship with Sartre, over the years, her experiences, her story. Two different times in volume but, for me, fundamental.
A full book, rich, where in my opinion Simone de Beauvoir is concentrated in every single word. Strong. Beautiful.

L'8 ottobre 1803, a Firenze, morì Vittorio Alfieri, drammaturgo, scrittore e poeta.

This book has been read by a person in which I hold the literary tastes of high esteem, and she particularly liked it. Then, by reading her autobiography, I had come to the point where talking about this book. I expected very different, I admit. But what I read... it's much better. I could not read anything else at the same time, how this story took me, from what I felt part of the narrative.
The Mandarins are a group of French intellectuals who gather, attend, discuss politics and literature after the end of World War II. Impossible, of course, does not see in the characters Madame de Beauvoir and the same circle of intellectuals to which she belonged, although the author denied. The main protagonists are the family Dubreuilh, composed of Robert, Anne, and their daughter Nadine, and Henri, a journalist and writer. Anne reflects much as I would see just Simone, while Robert, also for the relationship of the two spouses, is a reminiscent of Sartre. Lewis, the American lover of Anne, can only bring to mind Nelson Algren, to whom the book is dedicated.
Beyond the game of who is who, are the female characters in this book that struck me most. Anne, the narrator and the one through which we know the other characters, seems to represent rationality and common sense, perhaps because the mother of the family and as an adult woman. That is until a new love with a fickle and capricious man makes her throes of passion. For a game of mirrors, the daughter Nadine, initially infantile, capricious and impulsive, will become a more peaceful and rational woman. Another very strong female figure is Paule. A woman who sacrifices herself for love to a man, a woman who sees double and triple meanings in each sentence and gesture of her man, a woman who builds her only truth. The madness will bring her up to the lowest point of the slope, from where she will find the courage to recover.
It's almost incredible to see how these three women, smart women, who live in an intellectually stimulating environment, then show their weakness in dealing with the man they love or believe they love. It stands out the adult and mature relationship between Robert and Anne, the mirror of that between Simone and Jean Paul. A relationship of intellectual understanding and respect of each other's ideas, comparison. Fidelity is not a decisive factor, because they know they are joined by something else, more important.
I loved this book not only for the portrait that makes of a group of intellectuals, for the intelligence of the subjects. But also because she has been able to tell many moods that I myself feel. The desire to live in Anne at the beginning of the book, the desire of Henri to be himself as a writer, the insecurities in love. The phrase that most struck me, speaking Anne about his love for Lewis, is "love is always undeserved." A concept that I made mine, time ago, and that finding in a so important book surprised me.
A beautiful book, an intense, intelligent, deep novel. A novel written by Madame de Beauvoir after "The Second Sex", to witness a period of great inspiration.

Simone de Beauvoir
The Mandarins

Come dice nell'ultima riga:

I've read this book slowly, without hurry up myself. I wanted to understand every sentence, I wanted to enter the Simone's way of thinking. I came from this reading so enriched.
This is a fundamental text. It's past, present and future of women. Divided in two parts, the first one about Facts and Myths, the second one about Lived Experience. Inside this partition, in the first one there are psychoanalytic, historic and mythological overviews, as the women have been seen during the centuries. The second part explains women in their lived experiences, from childhood to old age, reporting examples from novels and true stories. Then, a few chapters are dedicated to narcissistic women, women in love and mystic women, chapters called "Justifications", like explanations given for some peculiarities. For example, the tendency of women to give up herself to their men when in love. What she wishes for is that a balanced relationship among two persons...

"...should be founded by the mutual recognition of two freedom; each one of two lovers prove itself as itself and other: nobody would give up their own transcendence, nobody would mutilate itself, both would discover together values and purposes".

Freedom and, by this, enrichment.

The last chapter and real aim of this book, the independent woman. The aim of the book and progress that Simone wishes for women.

I loved this book. Its strenght is that, even if it has been written and then published in the past century, it's incredibly modern. I saw myself in many parts of lived experiences, I examined myself and my self awareness developed.
World achieved many breakthroughs, but it's difficult avoid the fact that a lot of things and ideas didn't change at all. Discuss about the world of work. A woman, however expert, will always feel the duty to show how much she is good in her job and as housewife, obsessed by the need of looking expert and pleasant. And my mind goes to all those magazines full of suggestions about what women have to wear at work, how look plain but with that extra little fit of femininity... If man would look at women as his equal, she would be more natural, sure and relaxed and devote more time to her work.
Even when she reaches a prominent position, there is always a kind of doubts about her actual talent, and a kind of condiscendence from her male colleagues. She must work twice the amount, to carry out her duty and show that she is up to the job. But if a woman doesn't work hard, if she gives up because modesty, she loses more. Simone verifies that women think too much about how to be themselves to really being high-yield. What they lack is the "oblivion of themselves", while they are too busy looking for themselves.

"As long as they fight to become a human being, she isn't able to being a creator".

The time is come when to women, to every woman, is allowed to freely express herself. Just then, when men and women will be equals, educated with the same needs and the same respect, promised the same future, there will be no more higher and lower, and the relationship will become an exchange and a growth on equal terms. A relationship among human beings. As in the last line:

"...to carry off this supreme victory, men and women must, among other things and above and beyond their natural differentiations, unequivocally affirm their brotherhood".

A huge masterpiece.
