For a long time I haven't read Mrs. Bradley's stories, and already after only the first few lines, I realized how much I had missed her!
The story of this novel takes up the cycle of Avalon and is a prequel to the more famous "The Mists of Avalon", telling the stories of three ladies of Avalon, Caillean (and the one who will succeed her, Sianna), Dierna and finally Ana and Viviana, mother and daughter.
As in all stories, there is an intertwining between what happens in Avalon and the outside world of the Romans and Saxons, the power struggles to conquer northern Britain, and then the loves between the Priestesses and the men of the external world, when love and sex are magic and power.
What leads me to love this writer for at least twenty years is her so fascinating representation of a world so far away from us, and above all these female figures so magical and strong and intelligent that it is difficult to find an equal in any other literary work. I am not a lover of fantasy, but in front of Marion Zimmer Bradley I drop every reservation and throw myself completely into her stories.

Last book bought before the closing of all bookstores and the lockdown, on a sunny Sunday morning. Although it was a book that I had wanted to read for a while, perhaps that is why it has been waiting for a few days, because it reminded me of the last days of "freedom", without self-certification and restrictions.
We find Penelope in the underworld, when she has already lived her whole life and can finally look back without fear of expressing her true ideas. She remembers everything, since when she was a fifteen-year-old girl married to Ulysses, her married life, her relationships with her mother-in-law, with her maids, with her son Telemachus. We see Ulysses, very good in the art of gaining everyone's trust; we see Helen, vain and arrogant; Telemachus, a boy who rebels against his mother. Very interesting is the part dedicated to the maids, the scapegoat of the queen's faults, used and then thrown away because slaves, of no importance. Penelope, however, one of whom I had an image of a strong woman, in this book is reduced to an eternal moaner, easy to tears. One who gets fooled by that bitch of Helen, and I agree with that representation, but I always imagined her as one who would have answered and put her back in two words.
There is Greek mythology, there is Margaret Atwood's pen, but I'm not sure that this book convinced me. Not just for this situation with Penelope, but in general. However, given the quality of Atwood, it is always a head above many others that convince me.

The Penelopiad

A book that has kept me very good company in quarantine, but one could say that there are several books one inside the other, perfectly mixed. The cover reads "The overwhelming story of a love and a century...", but more than the love story, what really conquered me about this book is the extraordinary story of a woman, Iris Chase, who at a superficial vision, she would have been seen as the classic trophy and lackluster wife of a powerful man. Iris is a powerful character, she lives through a historical period full of events and hers is a life to be told. I love her frankness, her rawness, her resilience.
There are several plans in this novel, there is the present, the past and a sci-fi fictional dimension. But everything fits perfectly to create a complete overall picture.
I thought several times during the reading how it was possible that Atwood hasn't yet won a Nobel Prize, because like her few others can write!

The blind assassin

This book is not a new reading for me, but a rereading of a book that I didn't remember reading and didn't know was the sequel to The Diary of a Good Neighbour. So, although it has never been moved from its place on the shelf of books, for me it is like a new book.
We find Janna, fiftyfive years old, her full life between working as vice director of Lilith, a forced cohabitation with the difficult granddaughter Kate, the commitments with the old women she takes care of.
But finally, someone seems to be coming for her too, a charming doctor named Richard. But he too has a life full of people...
Doris Lessing is a teacher in telling the life of women, the little things, even the feelings and drives that we are ashamed of. Very good at creating characters, from thoughts to small physical details, it's like seeing them perfectly represented in our heads. None of them are perfect, nobody is a hero or heroine of good feelings, and this is what makes them credible, albeit with this constant reference to the perfection of home furnishings and the impeccable style of dressing.
Obviously also because of the isolation imposed, I read it in two days, but I would have devoured it anyway, I put aside any other book I was reading to dedicate myself completely to this novel.
Wonderful. And now I'm kind of sorry to leave Janna and all the other characters.

If the Old Could

Maudie and Janna are two women who couldn't be more different than that. Maudie is a ninety-year-old woman who lives alone, with a family who doesn't cares about her, is poor and arrange herself as much as she can. Janna is a forty-year-old rich woman and satisfied with her life, she is the vice director of a fashion magazine, she works a lot and she gives herself beautiful clothes, beautiful trips, beauty treatments, long restorative baths. In a normal world, two women like this would never cross. Instead, for some strange case of fate, Maudie and Janna meet and the younger one begins to take care of the older one and over time she also begins to love her, to become attached to her. Maudie is old and sick, Janna knows this very well. She also knows very well how proud and unpleasant she can be. Yet between the two there is a sincere feeling of friendship, of affection, between two women who want to decide on their life, but one of whom, although not recognizing it, needs help.
Doris Lessing tells in a perfect and sometimes ruthless way the world of elderly women, of their frailties and their strength, of how they deal with disease, old age, not being self-sufficient anymore. And it does so by comparing it with a mature woman, an independent woman, one who, however, also begins to feel loneliness and the first attacks of a body that begins to betray.
It is a book between the sweetness of sincere friendship and the brutal truth of a body that ages and falls ill.
I realized only at the end that it is a world entirely of women, where the only men represented are the doctors, distant, or the men of the past, husbands who very often die leaving their widowed wives. Because, as Lessing knows, in percentage terms, those who take care of the elderly, the caregivers, are mostly women. The opposite in the novel would have been forced and unreal.
I did not remember that "If the old could" was the sequel, as much as I read many years ago I will definitely take it back.

The diary of a good neighbour

I'm sure the Czech writer had a lot of fun writing this collection of short stories, that for him it was a divertissement...
I was reading the stories of these people and the only thing I could ask myself is how strong Kundera's reputation as a great writer must be for allowing him to write this stuff. There are seven stories, all focused on sex, about men who would do anything to do it and boast about it, and about women who when they are beautiful are to be conquered, sometimes to be subdued, while when they are ugly they are desperate women who would throw themselves on anyone.
Irritating characters and an irritation that spreads to the author.
The first edition is from 1968, still a world very different from what it is now, where this was perhaps the normality of relations between men and women. Or maybe, I hope, Kundera, that intellectual who he is, had already understood that there was something wrong and hence the ridiculous adjective. Or perhaps, more likely, they were trivial stories for him, because such light relationships were of little importance to him.
I don't know... honestly, the book left me quite disappointed with its author. I gave two stars because there are parts, important reflections, interesting ideas, worthy of an author often cited as one of the candidates for the Nobel Prize. But the remaining 90% of the book is hopefully forgettable.

Laughable Loves

Avrei dovuto farlo prima!

One of those books for which I've always felt awe. Composed of seven books, even if only for the length, it is not easy to decide to approach this reading.
But thanks to a lazy summer, and a sudden burst of desire for danger, I downloaded the first volume on my kobo and started.
I should have done it before! On page 200 I was already in love with his narrative, his writing style. How wonderful! A rich world, an ancient world, with its rules, its characters incredibly outlined with great perfection. There is no detail on which Proust does not pass over, everything is described in the individual details, and the reader can only let himself be enveloped by this world.
Not only the outside world, but the intimate world of the individual protagonists is complete. The first loves of the narrator, the first upsets. And consequently the ups and downs of the most experienced Swann, a man of the world, a friend of the Prince of Wales, and Odette, maintained and independent, in a game between the two of taking and leaving, of using and being used, by where neither of the two characters comes out immaculate.
The central part is certainly quicker to read, with the relationship between Swann and Odette, lighter, more worldly. While the autobiographical part remains with less action and more internal reflection.
Personally, I jumped into this reading, and I believe that I will not be able to abandon it until I am at the end of the seventh book. I am very curious to see how all the seven volumes will carry on the characters and the story, since only this first one alone seems absolutely full and dense to me!
In short, perhaps not really the typical summer reading, but an exciting reading, a true masterpiece, worthy of the name.

In Search of Lost Time. Swann's Way

The bookish side of the Web discussed a lot about this book and it deserves all the praise it has received.
Set in Sidney in the 1950s, it tells the story of four shop assistants in the women's clothing department in a department store perhaps comparable to our Rinascente. We meet Magda, a Slovenian transplanted to the Australian land; Patty, married to a flat and boring man and with a great desire to become a mother; Fay, who after a series of relationships with wrong men feels destined to remain alone forever; Lesley, or rather Lisa, a girl who peeks out in the world of women.
We follow them throughout their story, their vicissitudes, their feelings, their lives.
It is a light and polite novel, but not stupid. There is everyday life behind the glamour of the shop window, there is love and career, there is the past of each of them and the desire to build a life that these women choose.
I found it a very nice and very pleasant reading, with an impeccable narrative style.
How much I would really like to read more books like that!

One way to get to know better a great writer like Francis Scott Fitzgerald is through these letters to the agent, editor and other writer friends of him (like Hemingway, although I wouldn't call him a friend for how he treated him...) .
A more daily and true portrait of Fitzgerald comes out, his obsessive attention to every aspect of the book, from the choice of the cover, to any cuts, to the sentences to use in the advertisements. And also the portrait of the life of the Fitzgeralds family comes out, from the initial wealth to the final collapse, with the writer asking for loans from his agents, begging them for help to be able to support his family, to be able to keep his wife in a nursing home and daughter at school... it seems incredible seen from the contemporary world, where Fitzgerald is one of the sacred monsters of American literature, his books always present in bookstores and the films taken from his novels and stories are blockbusters.
Instead, at the time he was forced to accept jobs he didn't like and beg for money from agents. The reason? Certainly the waste that he had made it in parties and excesses, but also the fact that the publishing market of the time was certainly different from what it is now and there was no constant presence of writers in bookstores unless recent releases.
A very interesting book, certainly for those who are passionate about Francis Scott Fitzgerald, and for those who are curious about the mechanisms of the literature of the time.

It will be a masterpiece

Released 30 years before my birth, I have always seen this book as a kind of fundamental text for the study of animals. All this without having ever read it. Not that I thought about it every day.
Finally, a few months after buying it for a few euros in a pocket edition, I read it.
I definitely expected more. It didn't unleash any interest in the matter in me, finding the descriptions of the behavior of animals and his own personal considerations very boring, uninteresting and at times attributable to what was the way of thinking of that period. I recall that we are talking about the immediate post-war period.
In short, although there were parts that I liked the most, in general I didn't find the book interesting and I had a hard time to finish it. It will surely be my fault, after all ethology is certainly not my primary field of interest. But the book certainly didn't have the quality of accompanying me.

Formula semplice e vincente. La Regina del Giallo è una garanzia!

Agatha Christie's novels are a great certainty: aristocratic english settings, snobbish protagonists, twists, excellent narrative style.
This last one doesn't miss any of these characteristics. In a large English country house, during a meeting of aristocrats, a young guest is found dead. A few days pass and a second friend of the group dies from a shooting. The two deaths are certainly connected, but who is the murderer? I stop here, to avoid revealing something in the plot that is essential for a detective story.
It is a suitable reading for the period of isolation, because it is exciting, you read quickly, and in case you don't want to rack your brains to understand who the killer is, just wait at the end of the book and everything will be explained to you. Simple and winning formula. Mrs Christie is a guarantee!

Richard Dawkins is the author of one of the books that has most influenced me. His The God Delusion is one of the cornerstones of my thinking, a book thanks to which I understood many things. In the days of isolation, I took another of his books, a book that I had bought a few months ago but had not yet started. What better time to read it when you have to stay indoors?
The main theme of this is evolution, how it works, why it works that way. The title, The blind watchmaker, refers to a really beautiful image in my opinion: "natural selection is the blind watchmaker, blind because it does not see ahead, it does not plan consequences, it has no purpose in mind. Yet, the results of natural selection give us a very effective impression of the existence of an intentional design by a master watchmaker; that at the basis of the complexity of living nature there is an intentional design, however, it is only an illusion", showing the evolution as an alternative to creationism, and therefore to the existence of a creator god.
I needed more time to read and finish this book because, unlike the other, it is more technical, with rightly more references to physics and biology, subjects on which I, especially as regards the first one, have an extremely basic preparation.
This is why some parts remained very unclear to me until Dawkins, who knows how to write books, gave me a perhaps less technical but more understandable explanation.
Definitely a dive into an absolutely fascinating subject, explained with great intelligence and keeping the interest of the reader alive.
Probably, after this I believe that I will pour on some reading more suited to my cultural background, but I will certainly return to the British essayist for his other works.

This book was in my library on the shelves of the YetToRead for about a year and, to be honest, I thought it would stay there for a long time. I don't know why, I had this absurd idea that he was talking about a fate of black investigator, a kind of character between Mamy of Gone with the Wind and Miss Marple. Instead, evidently, I couldn't be more wrong.
Many have recommended this book to me as the perfect reading for the period of isolation in the home, if I was looking for a light but intelligent novel. The protagonist, Pat as the author, happens to become an orphan when he is just a boy, and his only relative still alive is Auntie Mame, a rich very extravagant lady. We follow Auntie Mame and Pat in a long series of daring adventures, between imaginative characters and boring enriched ones, in a world in which, despite all its extravagance, Auntie Mame always proves to be always the most intelligent, the most open-minded and always ready to take care of people, even if good intentions often don't last long...
Of course, one of those characters who would probably make a saint go crazy if one would really live next to them... but in the perimeter of the novel, it is a very pleasant and not at all obvious company!

In times when we were in physical isolation, in my days at home I finally drew on full hands from the shelf of books yet to be read. And how could I not be attracted to such a title?
The story tells the meeting between two lonely souls, him, McGreevy, because he is a fighter for the freedom of Ireland, always on the run, her, Josie, an elderly and lonely woman who in the past was the wife of a man dedicated to alcohol and violent. A relationship of affection and mutual care arises between the two, albeit so different.
There are two levels in the novel that intersect and interpenetrate. There is the relationship between Josie and McGreevy, of understanding, of friendship, of help. And then there is love, the pride of Ireland seen from two opposite ways of fighting for it, that of the fighters, violent and anarchist, and that of Josie and the policemen, who love it but want to respect the laws and rules.
The narrative style is the classic of a certain Anglo-Saxon literature, attention to the nuances of feelings, making the reader feel the warmth and atmospheres of houses and relationships between people.
It's a really good book, a few days companion in times of isolation, made me feel less alone.

Dopo migliora.

How crazy I was for Beautiful You, how upset I was by this Fight Club. I had never seen the movie, so the only idea I had was that it was about a circle of men who beat themselves to vent all their repressed feelings.
Well, let's say that the part of the club, although repeated often is not the central theme of the book. There is a total alienation in the story of the anonymous protagonist, absolute and senseless violence, a reaction to the world by sinking into anarchy.
And this is what most of all made me give two stars, because if in the previous one I read the reason is a plan, diabolical and evil, of course, but still a plan. Here there is a desire to vent all the repressed anger in the most violent and hallucinatory way possible, between pain at the limit of endurance and drug abuse. It is a descent into hell, but not a descent you might understand, it is something totally instinctive and hallucinating, in the literal sense of hallucinations.
The book is well written, however, the author knows how to make these spirals of destruction in a book. Besides, I don't think Fernando Pivano would have written the afterword if he hadn't found something interesting.
It is however his first novel. In the next books it improves.

Exit, definitely the right name, is a very exclusive clinic for people who want to end their life. The rules are clear and explicit when the contract is signed: no depressed people, no murders, everyone can choose the way to leave, as long as they do it within the time of the expiration of the contract. Free to leave in case of change of mind.
I don't think it's a novel for everyone, those who are too sensitive keep away from it, while perfect for those with a little dark humour. I would also avoid those who are polemical about euthanasia and such important issues, you would only hurm yourself.
I found it a very delicate and irreverent novel, a journey into the personalities and interpersonal relationships of a group of people who have decided to die and are all together in a cultured and elegant environment, to spend the last days of life. There is so much beauty, so much sensitivity, so much irony. And no judgment, only respect for others' decisions about themselves.

This quarantine led me to spend the whole day at home and to fill more hours at home than before. So, I came to try one thing I've always been skeptical about: audiobooks. It seemed strange to me to listen to a book while doing other things, for me reading has always been a completely totalizing experience, me and the book, immersed in reading so as to forget the outside world. I thought that listening to a non-fiction book would still be preferable to a novel, and I started this book by Francesco Costa because it was already on my wish list.
The book is really very interesting, it tells America without preconceptions (and there are many) or embellishments. Politics, social life, work, everything is explained precisely. It was a very interesting journey, having been there several times, some things were known to me, others were a discovery.
The stories told by people who have marked the history of the United States are very interesting, I often found myself looking for more information on the web. Except for Trump, I don't want to see him not even painted...
Recommended book, such as the podcasts of Francesco Costa and the newsletter to which I have readily subscribed to continue being informed about a country that I love and that I hope to see again soon!
The audiobook experienc... mmmh... I fear this is less encouraging, almost certainly it will be an experiment that will end here. It's not really in my style, but I had to try it to find out!

What would you do if one day you realize that everything that happens to you is fine? Do you get stellar reimbursements you didn't think you were entitled to, all women want to sleep with you, get away from incredible accidents, everyone apologizes to you and loves you?
Here, this is the story of Kurt O'Reilly, a statistician by profession and mental attitude, living in London. For about three months, his life has been a continuous succession of positive events. Even when he tries in every way to make things go wrong, he is fine.
Here, this is the initial plot (obviously we don't go further so as not to spoil) of a book by a newcomer, published by Adelphi, a publishing house that is not really a constant breeding ground for newcomers.
I must say that I like the basic idea, I think each of us has thought about whether there is a certain balance in the fortunes and misfortunes of all of us, perhaps in front of the friend with a very fortunate love life while you seem to spend one evening after another alone on the sofa drinking wine and watching Netflix.
But, the basic idea is certainly the best thing about this novel. Then the narrative style, Bacà knows how to write but without any originality, nothing that won't lead me to remember this reading in a month. A few steps lower I would put the story as it was developed, the setting is so not London that the references to streets and places of London continued to amaze me, as if I had not assimilated the concept and a continuous series of improbable skits and gags. At the bottom of the stairs, if possible even lower, the ending is very bad.
I would probably have given this book three stars if it weren't for those last few pages.

What's the level of acceptance of Singular Feminine in speaking the Italian language? Judging from this book, but I'm not surprised, it's definitely low. Specifically, as regards the singular feminine of the names of the professions and positions usually held all by men, a disaster. As long as these are normally "female" jobs, there are no problems. Teacher, nurse, cook. No problem. But it seems that even just saying (in Italian) assessora, avvocata, ingegnera, magistrata, la presidente, causes serious problems in the listener, up to hysterical crises and insults.
It seems that the Italians, besides being a people of poets, saints and seamen, are now also a people of distinguished linguists, people who believe they can also teach scholars of the Accademia della Crusca, a place where there are truly distinguished linguists. People who hold the banner of what they believe is the strongest motivation: it's bad to hear, and, I don't like it. As if the sound of a word and the appreciation of the individual Pinco Pallino were the basic requirements for a word to be accepted in a language.
Obviously, at least I hope, we are not all like this and examples are also found in this book, but I must say that in normal life I have often encountered the same resistance to the normal change of language. Italian is a mirror of society... and it shows.
Very interesting book, easy to read, no overly complicated or academic discussion of Italian grammar, within everyone's reach. Not only a book to reflect on the situation of Italian but also to reflect on the resistances towards a more inclusive language, without any forcing, only by using words already present in the dictionary and rules present in Italian grammar.

I decided for two stars because I recognize the validity of the writers and the importance of the stories. But apart from two that I found very beautiful and well made, the others were either reinterpretations that completely changed the story, or upheavals that left the story but changed it so much that it lost its meaning.
Probably, sometimes certain stories are better left as they are. There is no need to modernize them, because they are already modern in their having universal messages.
