Is it possible that a person isn't sure if he/she committed a crime? This is what happens to Norma Restarick. She meets the detective Hercule Poirot to submit herself. But than eats her words because Poirot is older than she imagined...
A wealthy and complicated family, a fragile girl, an invisible case, the infallible instinct of Poirot.
This is the second book I read by Agatha Christie, after the very famous Ten little niggers.
There is her own style in the crime stories. A completely different world. An elegance, many small clues scattered throughout the book, that in the last pages build a perfect puzzle. There's that anxiety, that wickedness that reigns in modern crime stories. Here's composure, British elegance... As Poirot keeps saying stubbornly to be Belgian, and especially not French.
The Queen of Crime, she is for a reason.

Every life is a path. In every life, we walk through a way, we change, we deal with rises and slopes, we walk under the rain and we enjoy the view in a sunny day.
Cheryl, in the moment when her life is at lowest point, makes a resolution. She needed to start again by herself. Who she is, what she wants, coming to terms with her mother's death. The answer is the PCT, the Pacific Crest Trail. A long-distance hiking trail, long 4286 km, aligned with the U.S. Pacific Coast. Finish line, Portland.
A spiritual path, of course, but most of all physical. A trial, at the end Cheryl's body was stronger, as it has never been in her life before. Marked, scratched, rough, but never before so strong. So, her soul.
What doesn't kill you, make you stronger, people says. PCT has been so hard, in every point of view. But she did it and she was stronger. Very strong.
A so inspirational book, a kind of total rebirth. Even in the worst time of our lives, starting again by ourselves, we can overcome everything. It will be hard, very hard, an inner challenge against ourselves. But beautiful.

How can you make me fall in love with a book? Just need a plot with a bookstore and a bit of magic. It's enough.
Jasmine is newly separated by the man she considered the love of her life, her heart is broken, her trust in the world and love lying in a waste disposal. She need a change and her Aunt Ruma's proposal arrives in the right moment: she has to come back to Indie because "heart's problems" and needs Jasmine to take her place in the bookstore. This place is so far away from the idea we have of a big bookstore: this one is located in a Victorian palace, full of dust, hidden little rooms, antiques of old writers. So, full of life. Maybe, too much! Because books are guardians of the writer's soul, and just few lucky humans are able to communicare with them. Or even fall in love with.
A novel for who loves books. A fairytale set in a bookstore. A kind of heaven for me, a tiny home, a magical place. I loved everything in this novel, characters, plot, the idea that you can really stay in touch with writers. I will wait for midnight and I'll try to ask something to Francis Scott Fitzgerald... if you can listen Jazz Music, well, don't worry!

Filosofo come tutti i napoletani, ironico, intelligente.

Lorenzo Marone has built a brilliant novel, thanks to what I reflected, and a funny novel, thanks to what I smiled a lot. A winning mix.
One of the last book I've read is a bestseller, and it was super boring. This one is a bestseller too. But they are totally different, as different are a hill and the K2.

In honour of this book and Cesare's frankness, I go off topic. What does make me happy?

Discovering new tastes of pizza and tea and cakes
The smell of petrol.
I like to do things on my own. (Is this the reason why reading is my world?)
The smell of rain.
Learning to speak new languages. (Finnish!)
To-Do-Lists.
Have NOT to speak in public.
When I finished to arranging my place and everything is perfect.
Getting rid of old things to make space for new ones.
Changing my hair's color.

So, I like inspiring news. Being inspired makes me happy.

You start a book you like. You are more or less at half way, seeing yourself mirrored in a lot of things, with that mix of tenderness and fun for your life and yourself. You decide to look for the writer's Twitter profile, because you want to tell her how much you enjoyed her book. There is, but it's not updated since two years. You think, well, maybe she doesn't love Twitter, there are a lot not loving an exposure on social medias, without being Elena Ferrante. You look on Internet to find an official site. Then you find out. Maria Perosino died in June of 2014, and the book I'm reading is her last one, published the day after her death.
And sadness prevails. Because the Maria in the book is a woman I would like to know. Honest, kind, maybe not perfect but lovely. One of those people who love to eat, read, meet new people and stories. And thanks to her, we know new stories too.
I wanted to really know a person like that, or at least write her hoe much I loved her book.
In the final thank you letter, she writes a list of people who helped her during her sickness. The last sentence is: "therefore, I just have to tell: thank you life."
Thank you Maria's life. Thank you for letting her to spread that mix of tenderness and fun. And a little sad thought to the idea that I can't get those 140 letters of tenderness across to her.

Niente cuore in fibrillazione stavolta.

Scott never disappoints me. Every book written by him is a masterpiece. And if the first two caused me pain in my belly for the turmoil, this one has been another kind of shock.
Nicole and Dick are wife and husband. Rich, beautiful, elegant. They are that kind of people you have to be friend with to have fun. They spend a lot of money without any regret and enjoy their life completely. Their relationship from the beginning is characterised by a protection of Dick for Nicole, a taking care of her as an incredibly fragile person. Dick, the man of the world, the psychiatrist of good repute, handsome and attractive; Nicole, beautiful and elegant, but actually looking for approval.
It's a novel that, when you read it, you feel like "sliding" in the main characters' lives, of those main characters that are fine even when involved in scuffles and finish their days with an elegant cocktail.
Nicole is of course Zelda. Her illness, that so envyed beauty. Parts of Zelda's real letters are in this novel. And Dick's alcoholism, his dragging himself down, is Scott's alcoholism.
We can find a lot of Fitzgeralds' in this novel. How they are, what Scott would want.
What he did is making a beautiful novel. A true masterpiece. His last complete novel. It's like finally, in this last novel, Scott reached his more mature writing. No heart in fibrillation this time. But a maturity that leaves the most his mark.

Tender is the night

In the 1937, Scott, in financial and personal crisis, due to his wife Zelda's mental sickness, accept a job as screenwriter in Hollywood for the MGM. Thanks to this task, his financial resources increase and he'll be more serene, thanks too to his relationship with Sheilah Graham, a gossip columnist. In this period of his life spent in the Mecca of the Movies he wrote this collection of short stories about Pat Hobby. The main character is a screenwriter, at the height of his career when there were silent movies and forgotten after sound effects. He represent the last step in the movies industry, he strives to do any kind of job paid less than before, little tricks and big drinks, meeting young women who would do anything to be a star, disenchanted secretaries and managers without concerns. A behind the scenes told by a ruthless narrator.
There is Scott in these stories, there is his characterisation. Scott is the best in narrating the personal failure. But... it lacks that brilliance, that genius. It looks like a collection of short stories that Scott wrote for personal amusement. Enjoyable, funny, ridicolous. Of course, a second-best wrote by the first-choice Francis Scott Fitzgerald.

The Pat Hobby Stories

I think that I started this review at least ten times. I wasn't able to find the right way to explain this book. Let's start from the beginning.
First italian edition of ; currently not present, as what I found, in the publishing house's catalogue. I bumped into this book in the street market of my city, on sale for a price I woul define paltry (Glory to the street market sellers who don't know how much really are worth the books they sell). I needed time to start it, a bit scared by its size.
The book is a biography of Zelda Sayre, Francis Scott Fitzgerald's wife. Of course, he is the lumbering co-star of this story, already in the subtitle (not very kind toward her) "An extraordinary true novel in the Francis Scott Fitzgerald's life". After this book's reading, we can say properly that Scott was better in writing their life, but Zelda was living it first-hand. His wife was the perfect depiction of his characters, or vice-versa. And he didn't allow it was different. He was the writer, and if she wanted to write she could but only under his supervision. Their life was in his novels, and just him could write about it. My devotion in Scott staggered during this reading. Scott was profoundly in love with his wife, but he loved himself and the writing too. Comes out a picture of Scott as egotistical, despotic, almost manipulator. I must admit, to be honest, I suppose living with Zelda has been pretty hard. She had no limits, she did everything she wanted, she took every experience at the maximum level. I quite agree with Hemingway who said that Zelda was an obstacle for the full development of Scott's literary talent. Who knows if married to a more traditional wife, maybe more boring, his career would have been different. But he wouldn't live the Twenties at their fullest. There wouldn't be the Jazz Age. Thank goodness, you can't do history with ifs and buts. And Scott and Zelda, no more flawless, were real.

This review gives me some struggles. Because on this book I placed not hopes but various and different feelings.
I really like Chiara Gamberale. I like Gramellini as journalist, less as writer. Who know why, as journalist he is shrewd and funny, that I like, while as writer he is a bit sugary, that I like less. In fact, at the end of my reading, in the book I liked more the Gioconda's chapters than the Filomene's ones.
Same thing for the book. At the beginning, it was sugary, then I got into the story, and I even marked a few significant quotes. But then, going on, I would leap over the angel's letters, and the ending too was too predictable. At the end, I liked the central part, less the others.
But, I didn't dislike this one at all. The story is nice, a lot of food for thought. I won't think about it while I will be in my queue at the postal office and I won't be enlightened, but those few quotes marked on my phones will arrive at just the right moment. Something will stay, all things considered.

I'll take care of you

From that time on, the world was hers for the reading. She would never be lonely again, never miss the lack of intimate friends. Books became her friends and there was one for every mood. There was poetry for quiet companionship. There was adventure when she tired of quiet hours. There would be love stories when she came into adolescence and when she wanted to feel a closeness to someone she could read a biography. On that day when she first knew she could read, she made a vow to read one book a day as long as she lived.

Lei, grande cuore, grande anima.

A letter received by R., forty-year-old writer from Vienna, during his birthday. A letter telling the story of a life. A life spent loving him, looking for him. Every gesture, every action made in the name of him. So, we discover that when she was a young girl she fell in love for him, and she succeeded at loving him, touching him, crossing that door few times. But she never scraped that facade, he never retained her memory, he never waited for her. A strong and complete love at her side, unperceivable traces and partial interest at his side.
He lived a flawless life, she lived a life made by that burning passion.
A strong story, of a woman called "crazy" by someone, but for me she is an heroine. Who has been free by a blind love? Rationality says no. But this woman followed her heart completely. The two main characters, he looks careless, superficial and vain. He is able just to go to the theatre and walk arm in arm with a different woman every day. She has a great heart, a great soul.

Scelto perché:
Frizzante divertente, eccentrico.

Irene è nata prematura, è in incubatrice.

In this period, I have a kind of attraction for sad books. Not that this is sad, in a literal sense. There is a strong hope in and on every page.
Maria is more than forty years and expects to become a mother after giving birth. Irene was born premature, she is in the incubator. Maria expects to see her breathe. She doesn't know anything else. As the doctors don't know, they have no certainties, they can only give her a spectrum of possibilities, from the most positive to the most negative. Like her other parents of children in the ward, her moral and emotional support. Maria can only wait.
Almost a parallelism between Maria as a mother and Maria as a teacher. The baby girl who expects to be "born", her pupils waiting for the exam to finally have a middle school license. License that for all them means above all the possibility of a safer work.
The white space is the time that elapses while waiting. In the hope of a better future. Sad, but not inevitable. Only white. Waiting for the nuances.
From this book, in 2009, has been released the eponymous movie starring Margherita Buy. Now to see.

No, leggete per vivere.

This collection of portraits of various protagonists is her first experiment with the narrative. Even with some bombast in style, there is already her own style.
The five protagonists are all linked together by kinship or friendship. Their stories are moving forward even in the stories of others.
Marcelle married the wrong man, but realizes she does not need to marry a man of genius, because she is a woman of genius. Professor Chantal is a charming little narcissist who comes from Paris to the school district. Lisa, the student still child who discovers the world of adults. Anne, daughter of a domineering mother and bigoted, which vanishes for love. Finally Marguerite, sister of Marcelle, the one that begins with a strong faith to want to try every experience at the side of the brother in law, to prove herself alive, to prove adulthood.
Five women crossing a completely different way. They change, they mature, they feel, they play, they experience. They fail, too. Different degrees of feminism, I could say.
First test already at a very high level. The rest is history.

Giovane, in carriera, moderna. Mai concedere questo potere all'altra persona.
Murielle parla a ruota libera.

Every time, every single time, Simone de Beauvoir is able to create something beautiful, something inspiring, something better.
"The Womand Destroyed" is a collection of three tales. The one that the book is named after, the longest and first in my edition, is the most important.
Monique is an housewife, married with Maurice. They have two daughters, Colette, married with a good man who loves her much, and Lucienne, New Yorker, maybe more arid but more concrete too. Monique soon discovers the relationship of her husband with Noellie, lawyer, upstart young woman and a little snob. But Noellie is all that Monique is not. Young, has a career, modern. Monique is completely dependent on her husband, she no longer worked. And this is the central point. When a man leaves us, if we are too dependent on him, there is nothing left. We are afraid of the future. Never give this power to another person. Never leave our lives in the hands of someone else.
The second story is about a scholar in his sixties, married to a scientist who sees her ideals betrayed by his son. Philippe abandons the path chosen for him by his mother, teaching, for a better paid job to the Ministry of Culture. It does trigger the crisis, as the family thinks at the current government like a regime.
The third story is... strange. A little hysterical monologue. A river of words. Murielle speaks freewheeling. It's New Year's Eve and she cannot sleep for the noise in the streets and nearby buildings. She recalls her life, her loves, her family. And above all, the death of her daughter, Sylvie. The other son, Francis, taken into custody by the father, Tristan, and already with a dandy's behavior.
A collection of short stories by "destroyed" women. Because of unfaithful husbands, turncoats of children, sudden and tragic dropouts. A collection of stories, facts of life. And a lesson. Independence. A valuable lesson. The further proof of the greatness of Simone de Beauvoir.

The Woman Destroyed

E Simone e Jean Paul sempre in prima fila, a discutere, a combattere.
E poi i viaggi.

The last chapter of Simone's autobiography. A different writing of the other three books. The order is no more chronological, but the chapters are divided by subjects.
She tells a lot about old age, a loved subject for Simone while she gets on in years.Simone's old age and her friends, what fate had set aside for them. Current or past friendships.
The relationship with Sartre doesn't stop, with whom she shares political activism. In the second part of the book, she tells about Russia, China, Vietnam. And Simone and Jean Paul are always in the frontline, discussing and fighting. In the last pages, this time only her, her feminism.
But she doesn't tell just about political and social activism. There is a
confluence of her passions. Books, first of all. Reading is essential for her, as the air she breathes. And then, travels. These are the two greatest passions, she can't live without them.
So, more than a chapter of the autobiography, it's deling with herserlf, her life, her relationships, her world. Never idle, never tired, never trivial, never false.
Finishing this autobiography, there is a bit of sadness. Like her, I leave the ending in this way.

I want to start from the end, from the last pages of this book. The author reports a sentence written on a wall in Athens: "Moni patrida ta paidika mas chronia", or, "Only homeland our childhood's years".
When I was a young girl, more or less when I was ten years old, someone gave me a book for present. A lot of people gave me books for present, I was a girl who already loved to read, but this one was different. It was a book about stories of greek mythology, and there were several illustrations of the events. I've read it so many times I knew every one by heart, not mentioning also the kinships of the characters. I knew exactly every genealogical treeo of gods, heroes or mortals.
This book brought me back to that period, to my childhood. The wedding of Thetis and Peleus and the apple of discord, on what there was written "Kalliste", "To the Fairest". The Judgement of Paris, the vain trojan prince. Helen and Menelaus, and then Agamemnon, the clever Odysseus, Achilles, Hector, King Priam and Queen Hecuba. They are all in here, as a group of friends I can find again after a long time. And that still has something to tell me. Because in this book there isn't only Homer's version, maybe the most famous. But also the ones written by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. And then, of course, Virgil.
A book that narrates at its best, in a complete way, the epic of the Trojan war. A story that, let me tell you, is still more fascinating of every modern tv shows. In this story you can find the best scenes of love, violence, sex, passion, desires and revenge.
Many thanks to the publishing house Sonzogno for let me getting lost between the greek warriors camp and the streets of Troy. A wonderful book.

******************************************************************************

Tiesin ulkoa kaikki perheen puut, he olivat jumalia, sankareita tai kuolevaiset.
Tämä kirja toi minut takaisin tuohon aikaan, lapsuuteni vuotta. Häät Thetis ja Peleus ja haaste omena merkintä "Kalliste", kaunein. Valinta Pariisin, Troijan prinssi turhaan.

I don't know why, I think it's one of those thing from the heart more than from the mind. But I always feel a kind of close acquaintance with writers from the north Europe. A method of representing life I feel mine, something I could call almost sensorial, relating to tastes, sensations. Summer and heatwave are a context in this novel. Heat would mean more a feeling we all feel in the summer, almost before a burn, when something shocking happens to us... and then heat as warmth, when we feel at ease, safe.
One morning, Robert Riordan goes out and doesn't come back. His wife Greta, their son Michael Francis and their daughters Monica and Aoife (I still didn't understand how to pronounce it) gather together to decide what to do and discover where their father is. And like in every family, the problems sooner or later find out... An Irish family in England, three children, each one with their life, a mother who hides a secret. Something is going to happen inevitably.
These novels, anglo-saxons families, I don't know why, they give me serenity. Like coming back home. I feel like I share their feelings. I feel them close. That's why I loved this book. Riordan's family with their problem but strong, they are like part of me.
I love this novel. And now I'm going to read every novel by Mrs O'Farrell.

This is a true story. A story like that famous movie with Robin Williams. A teacher changes your life, make you "think". A teacher that at the end goes away, and you realize how much he has been important, special.
It's a pity that... I'm cynical. The story is for sure tearjerker, I would love to know a person like the professor Morrie Schwartz. But, as I've read in a review, this book is more sugar than real matter.
It's everything too perfect for its purpose. I don't want to diminish the importance of the subjects and the truth of the quotes, but it's flawless, there isn't any crack, nothing. The cliché "love wins all" is the worse.
I can't assign just one star, but I can't assign five stars neither. Three is the right compromise.

Figure femminili potenti, come Beatrix Whittaker e Hanneke de Groot.
Ci ho messo sette mesi a finirlo.

I needed seven months to read this book. Taken, abandoned, taken again, abandoned again and then... never more abandoned. The history of Henry has been an hurdle to overtake. But just Alma made her entrance, I loved her and I didn't want leave her anymore. This is her story, from her birth in Philadephia in the wealthy and important Whittaker's family, from her adolescence to her oldness, her botanical studies, her love for Ambrose Pyke, her stay in Tahiti and Holland. Alma goes throught ninety years of history of humans and science, she studies, she becomes not only cultured but also wise. She is a huge character. Unlucky in love, but stubborn and obstinate in searching the truth, in the study of the world. No truth she is afraid of, no hurdle she doesn't want to overtake. And she isn't please in any way of a too general answer.
Power female characters, as Beatrix Whittaker and Hanneke de Groot. Rational dutch women, with strange ideas in the head, cultured and stubborn. And then Prudence, the beautiful sister, but a character who Alma doesn't understand entirely, even if loving her much.
I loved Alma. I found a lot myself in her, her will to see it through everything, her yearning to know. Her preference in working alone, precise and careful to details. Looking at and being able to recognise the importance even of humble plants as the mosses. Even her bad luck in love, that learning how to communicate but without being able to achieve what or who she wants.
I needed seven months to read it. But it's worth the effort just to meet a character like Alma.

The Agnelli's are called the Italian Kennedy. Rich and powerful. This book gives us a little bit of this world of elite. The 231 pages are the story of childhood and youth of Susanna Agnelli, the sister of L'Avvocato, until her marriage.
Then we know a world that remember a bit, referring to these days, Downton Abbey. Big houses, servants who ends up being snob like the landlords, important friendships and connections in high levels, many trips. Very interesting character is her mother and grandmother, Princess Jane, two real aristocratic snob.
In between, the war. Susanna joins the Red Cross and served as a nurse. Among his acquaintances, stands Galeazzo Ciano.
She is stubborn, one that doesn't give up in the face of obstacles. But... Of course, it's easy when you have those resources available. When, to save time, you go directly to the Minister of Education for the chance to take an exam ahead of time. Easy when you have that grandfather and that mother with those important contacts. Mrs. Agnelli was nice, but it is thanks to that name and that membership ("Do not forget you are an Agnelli") if she could have what she had. In these pages lies a "I'm an Agnelli and I decide".
We all know very well that it is the fate that brings you to be born into a family. But it is an event, not a virtue.
(The Lady then made good thanks to Telethon and its actions, the review is based only on what she says in the book about her life).

We used to dress like sailors

Back to black.

Who in the world didn't love Amy, her gorgeous voice, her songs, her charisma, her so unique and resolute look. And, at the same time, who has been surprised by her death. Videos of her disastrous shows, her lifeless gaze. We all had an idea about her life, how many times we said "they didn't protect her enough", "she was a drug addict till the end", "her family was interested only in her money". Well, I must admit there were my thoughts too. Now, after this book's last page, I understand how much we were mistaken.
Thank God I have never deal with people addicted to alcohol or drugs, but even if I know only little it's easy to say that someone has to force them quitting and going to rehab. Drugs have no way out. Amy's family was there for her, desperately trying to help her. But Amy was a grown up and it was impossible to stop her, unless she was aware of her situation and determined to change it. Also, according to her father, Amy was clean by drugs long time before she died. Alcohol killed her.
And now yes, we can say that ii was a huge waste of talent. We can say that it was a huge loss for the art, that I would love to listen her voice in many other songs.
This book gave me a strange blues. Back to Black.
