Saggista, intellettuale, scrittrice. Susan Sontag fu tantissimo.

Essayist, intellectual, writer. Susan Sontag was a lot of beautiful things. I decided to begin not with her books, where I can find her completely, but with an interview, where there is her thinking but necessarily diluted and compacted in short answers.
First of all, no intellectual arrogance or individualism. She is a woman who appreciate funny and extroverted people around her, who likes rock music and eat well. But, her point of view is always interesting about any subject.
Photography, herself, maternity, illness, New York, her managing to make it by her own efforts. To be honest, there are few pages in which looks like she wants to have the point, beating weirdly around the bush. As for example, the clichès of living in Boston and in New York.
There is a lot to think about in this interview, and then to analyze in her work.

You have to consider that for Ian McEwan I have a huge respect, higher than the Pope's one for Jesus Christ. I said it all.
I knew that the main character of his last novel is a fetus, and I was looking forward to discovering how he created an original story with such this character. More, differently by his previous novels, this time he didn't need to do any research, but everything was born inside his extraordinary head.

Private note: I'll never stop to thank my childhood friend Giulia for sending me the book from England. Honey, you must know that the cover now is thinner because I caressed it so much time!

I wanted to read it in original language for two reasons: because in Italy it will be published in March 2017, and I can't wait so much time; and because Ian McEwan has an incredibly elegant writing and an absolutelyt perfect lessical choice, and as a result a precise and musical prose, superior than poetry.
The story, well, I would like to telling the plot entirely because it's brilliant, full of twists, of psychological tension, of moments leaving yuo breathless. But I'm not going to do it because I don't want to spoil this experience to who will read in Italian and who hasn't yet read it in English.
There is parallelism with Hamlet, and I totally agree. The names of the lovers, Trudy and Claude, echo the Shakesperian Claudio and Gertrude. One stage for the tragedy, the house of St. John's Wood. Twenty chapters, as many as the scenes, divided in five acts, of the tragedy.
The first person narrator, a fetus of eight months and half. Not-yet-born, but already with a good knowledge of the music of Bach, international political situation, thanks to its mum who listens podcasts everyday. More, connoisseur of wines with a marked propensity for french ones, thanks, or better, due to a mother who never knew than drinking heavy during pregnancy isn't the smartest thing to do for the good of the baby's health. Not that it is her biggest problem, is we want to be precise.

I still don't know how much I can tell you about the plot and the characters, because in this moment the only thing I want to do is make a call to Ian McEwan and tell him how much his novel is gorgeous and brilliant, and how much I'm still touched and excited by the reading. At most, I could write two words in Facebook, hoping in a personal reading by him. I need so much time to read this review, between a caress to the cover, writing those two words, thinking how much I loved this book. I would like to assign 10, 100 stars, or maybe I could create a category just for it. In this moment, my respect for him is higher than the one Hamlet has for his his father. I said it all, again.

Thank You, Ian Mcewan. For being the brilliant writer you are. For being that perfect human being you are.

Meh.

I "knew" this book from the relating videos in the website of a well known italian newwspaper. At the beginning, it looks like a good idea. A picture of contemporary women, with their own differences. I saw two or three and then stop, they look all identical.
Then I've borrowed the book and I've thought "more stories, more completeness".
I've finished the book, but I still believe that it's a good idea gone bad.
There is nothing new, nothing that made me think. Nothing that a person with a minimal experience in life doesn't know already. Sure, I've found myself in some stories. A lot are definitely outside my life.
It's predictable, banal.

Ho rivisto molte cose di me in Kate Bolick.

Just finished to read this book and I'm not going to stop soon to thank the Italian publishing house Sonzogno for gave me the opportunity to read it and even more the author who wrote it.
I was expecting something completely different. Those books along the same lines as Sex and the City, where the author tells the funny lives of herself and her friends, and it ends that everyone get married, except the only one who never reflected you. Instead... it is a thousand times better!
Kate Bolick tells about her life and the influence that five women, five "awakeners", five voices with who she "converses" (even if they are dead) and confronts herself. An essayist, a poetess, a columnist, a novelist and a social idealist. These women are the mirrors in which Kate looks herself, draws, reflects. A proper sentimental education in being a spinster. Living a full life on your own account, independent, with full decision power on everything, nice things and boring stuff. Spinster is a state of mind, and one can be a spinster even in a couple, when in any case and always you keep following your freedom.
I've found a lot of myself in Kate Bolick.
That turning towards books and cultural "awakeners" for my own life.
The appreciation for a certain kind of interior design, warm, embracing, better if second hand and full of stories.
That never settle for anything less of what we want. Keep looking for "independence, experience, observation".
That appreciating men "with a moral intelligence, talking with him is like entering in a library full of books where my thoughts can go meandering freely".

It's not an easy journey to arrive at the definition "spinster", understanding that the solitude is a state in which we are at ease. It's very different by being an hermit, because it's sufficient to go out our houses and we like it. It's an appreciating your own spaces, choosing the freedom to organize your own life knowing that there is always a price to pay for independence, a choosing who to let in because we want that person and not because we don't know how to stay alone.

There is an entire world of possibilities. And the spinsters exercise their full right to decide which one to choose.

The author is great, again. With full rights one of my own awakeners, a soul friend in "spinstering".

Ian McEwan will never stop to amaze me. Every single novel he wrote kept me enthralled to the pages, happy victim of his unique style.
I read that the temporal set of this novel is the same as the Joyce's Ulysses, story of one day, from morning to night. Well, in my personal opinion, the result is completely different. As much Ulysses bored me, I loved Saturday.
Henry Perowne wakes up in his house in Fitzrovia, the 15th February of 2003. He is a well known neurosurgeon, he is happily married, has two intelligent kids active in music and poetry. His day begins as involuntary witness of a burning airplane heading to the Heathrow Airport. That same day in London is set the March Against the Invasion of Iraq. Foreign policy enters in his wealthy world and influence his day. The book is kind a monologue, we follow his life and his thoughts, the reasons of every single act. Every moment, every reaction is dissected. Islamic terrorism, death, policy, they pass the novel through him.
At first sight it looks punctilious, every single action is told in minimum details and every thought is examined fully. But, McEwan keeps the control of the story so well and the narration is always entangling and elegant.
Characters and setting are familiar to him, in fact, among other things, Perowne's house is close to the real McEwan's house, they are both middle-age men, very active and with a son who plays the guitar.
As I said starting this review, a beautiful novel, to enjoy slowly, word after word. If I could be an object, I would be the writing instrument of Ian McEwan. Because it's there that the magic starts.

During the reading of this book, I made a little comparison with the autobiography of one of my favourite writer, Doris Lessing. Before this last one, I've read a lot of novel by Doris, a lot of interviews. But her autobiography didn't excite me. Too much pages spent talking about her childhood, and maybe, and here I feel sorry, a bit boring style, unbelievable because it's Doris' (influenced maybe by my boredom in reading about childhood in general).
At the opposite, I've read nothing about Sacks before this book, but I knew who he was. And his autobiography captured me from the first moment. A full life told with extreme honesty, interesting even when we talk about weight lifting and medical neurology, two fields I know anything about. Even when he went into a detailed description of his patients, it has been very interesting. It was because his own very intense writing style.
So, a book that deserves 5 stars, because made me appreciate a story where clinical cases absorb the most pages.
Of of those authors that, when you close the book, would like to be friend with.

Quanto avrei voluto conoscerlo. Sarebbe stato un privilegio.
Anche solo dirgli grazie. Grazie Professor Eco.

His last book. Our last thank you to a man who has been fundamental for culture in Italy. My not last thank you to a man who had my total respect and trust. And men of this kind are very few. Pape Satàn Aleppe is a collection of "Bustine di Minerva", his short pieces about several subjects of recent news. The style... Well. So. I am writing of one of the greatest writers in Italy. Of course his articles are short essays, written so well that another writer would cut its own hand to being able to write this way.
Always shrewd, brilliant, ironic, he alternates his personal memories with erudite quotes, so that you can imagine hime in his huge library that, while writing the article, search the volume in which there is that reference, book of course unknown by the most but him who knows the universal importance. As well as, for every subject, he has a personalised and reasoned bibliography.
How much I wanted to know him. It would have been a privilege.
I wanted just to say thank you. Thank you, Professor Eco. Because you made our mind a better place.

Albus e Scorpius, pretendenti entrambi a quanto pare al titolo "The Cursed Child".

I wanted to wait for the Italian version, I was sure I am able to resist. But how it was possible, for one like me, who had read the seven books in just one summer? At the end I gave up, and I've bought the ebook in the original version.
So... Probably this is the most difficult book to review for anyone who loves this saga. I'll to try to avoid spoilers in respect of who has to wait the translation.
I'm so happy I have in my hands another piece of the magical world of Hogwarts. Meeting again Harry, Ron, Hermione, even Draco, as old friends was beautiful. Getting to know their children, and reading about their struggles as parents. Professor MacGranitt, what a pleasure!
Many twists, especially one, so unbelievable. Eh, that Sorting Hat! And who has read it knows this reference.
But... there are few flaws. Being a script for a theatrical play, of course, the action is not so rapid as it is in books and movies. So less characters and more focus on the main characters. Albus and Scorpius, it seems they are both pretender to the title "The Cursed Child".
Together, even the psychology of the characters depreciates a little bit. Ron has pictured as an idiot, the only one who, while the other ones establish themselves, stays at home with their kids and runs the brother's store... with George I guess, but he's never mentioned. Rose Granger-Weasley is the same of her mother. Smart but snobbish.
Albus... Sorry honey, but you're a whiner.
Other little flaws are scattered around the book, little things but for us, alert to any detail, change everything. Spells made outside Hogwarts, magics that twenty years before last few chapters and now just five minutes, between the other ones.
The story is however another story of Harry Potter, and I appreciated it. But it's not an eight novel. It's something else, an episode.
But if you aren't Muggles, you must read it.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Davvero.

The westerners, in general, have an imprecise idea about what an harem is. They imagine easy women dressed only of veils, sensual music. None of this.
Mrs Mernissi tells her childhood, the house of her parents, the daily life in Fez in the years after the Second World War. These are years of change in the world and in Morocco too. The women's liberation movement begins to take the first steps and things change. The habits and the clothings are unrestrained. This new freedom has to deal with the inner opposition in the families.
Fatema's mother is in between the old and the new generation. She has grown up following the old traditions but she realizes how much her house is actually a prison from where she can't go out without authorization. Closed in these four walls she pours out her will of freedom only in part. She dreams for her daughters a life with the freedom to study, travel, wear everything they want, choose the man to love.
Harem is so the part of the house for women and children. A place where they talk, tell stories, embellish themselves, make little magic. and most of all go up on the terrace, forbidden place where no one can go, where women secretly go to look over those walls, to smile to the neighbours, to talk about prohibited subjects.
A very interesting reading, a look at a so different world. We discover the real harem and we visit hammam, we attend body treatments by ancient rituals of beauty and magic formulas, we see the differents of women and men.
The writer has a tender heart for that world, aware of that beauty but even its role of prison for women. There is a very small opening but there is still a lot to do.
A charming book, how the back of the cover defines it. Indeed.

Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood

Bravissima!

I've met Ester Viola on Twitter, followed, and her profile is the first one I check when I log in. She has that something that makes her special, a mix of intelligence, biting irony, lightness.
These qualities, and more, I found in this novel.
Olivia Marni works in Luca Ardenghi's law office. She deals with divorcements, especially of people rich enough to not make their children's life too miserable, or at least not giving this as reason to moaning their childhood. It's a little bit more than pretty, a little bit more than capable, but very good in choosing the right professional sector, and in not falling in love with who she likes and falling in love with who she doesn't like.
It's not as much as she does that I like, it's how she analyse it. Master (or better, pupil of the author) in setting in the right place the facts of life and love. In my memory for century, the Law Jolie-Pitt, the counterbalance of the world.
I've lost the count of how much time, during my reading, I went pale and looked around because she was writing about me. I'm not suspecting anymore of CIA, FBI or KGB, because now I'm sure Ester Viola reads my WhatsApp chats.
Must read, no ifs, ands, or buts. Very good!

Love is eternal as long as doesn't answer

Come no...

I liked 1Q84. This one... Too, but not so much.
It's a collection of short stories with a theme, the idea of the title: men without women. Men who let themselves dying because an abandonment, men who disappear, men let alone by contemporary Sherazade who will eventually come back to finish a story. There is Gregor Samsa too, back from the world of cockroaches, where he forgot everything he knew but not the sexual instincts.
As usual, stories are in between an infinite surreality and a ground-to-groud materiality. References to sex, penis and boobs are always present. Not to mention about the stereotypes about women, who doesn't know how to drive and lie because physically fitted thanks to an organ only them have. Yes, sure...
Maybe because in little portions, these short stories are an enjoyable reading. But for me they are tasteless.

Men Without Women

E triste.

Berlin 1933-1934, the years when Nazism becomes more powerful, acts of violence against foreigners and Jews increase and Hitler takes the total control.
Years we live reading about the American Ambassador in Berlin William E. Dodd and his daughter Martha. If at the beginning Germany and its government show just peaceful intents and openness, in the course of months the real nature of Nazism comes to light, that monstrous behind the appearance of so kind and gentle men. The same men who are brilliant guests to State Dinners are those who run concentration camps and SS, the same with who people joke and talk about culture in front of a glass of wine are those who organize purges without batting an eyelid. It's not better with the delegates of other countries, that for fear never express completely their blame and disapproval.
The only ones to shine are the Ambassador Dodd, who doesn't hide his concern in front of deviation of the Nazi regime, and his daughter Martha, who is initially conquered by the elegance of this new world, but then she discovers very soon the other side of the coin.
An interesting and well-written book, it brings back to mind the atmosphere of Germany at the beginning of what will be a nightmare. We are present at every step in this escalation of violence, culminated in the Night of the Long Knives and then the taking control of the now Fuhrer.
It's an incredibly modern book. Unfortunately the blind violence isn't just a memory of the past but is of present days. Still now, we wonder how is possible that the world in 1934, that entire populations can tolerate such a violence at the daylight, and even being dominated by this crazy people. I'm afraid this is a question we will never find the answer.
Maybe not a light summer reading, but very beautiful and interesting. And sad.

In the Garden of Beasts

Tanto, amica mia, tantissimo.

I was very curious to read this book, I started when I saw an interview of the couple at an Italian show.
He is Fausto Brizzi, writer and director of movie like "Night before exams", and she is Claudia Zanella, actress and naturopath. And vegan. Actually, as he said during their first date, "vegan vegan". The same date at the end of what she said "I like you, but I'm sorry you are going to die soon". But he's an optimist, and went on. More than being an optimist, a masochist too. Actually, a masochist masochist.
She is a despot. Beyond the limit of arrogance and mutual respect, not just ban by his diet meat and dairy products, but impose a different lifestyle too. And what happens if he makes mistakes, especially when she is out of town? He is punished with days of fasting or other similar pleasantnesses. In my opinion, is already a punishment being in a relationship with this woman.
I'm really uncertain about who is the more annoying of these two. She is without excuses, but he is worse of a doormat. I've lost the count of how many times while reading I thought: "But when the hell he decides to tell her to buzz off and shut up that stupid mouth at least for once?"
He is so totally, completely, absolutely reduced to nothing. He is powerless, under her control. And if this book is a thorough picture of their relationship, I hope for his mental health that he wakes up soon and realizes how much he is embarassing.
I was reading a Peanuts' comic strip, and Lucy wonder "It's amazing how stupid you can be when you're in love...". A lot, my dear friend.

E orgogliosamente contraria.

I'm not going to read another book by this author, never. There is no possibility!
The story would be interesting, he writes very well... but it's so boring! Pages and pages for every single thing happens, cleaning a bathroom or thinking about life. And it's an incessant moving to past and present, and then again. It's not the stream of consciousness as Joyce did but it's just a seasickness.
It's a constant and self-centred thinking about himself. Very boring.
I wanted to finish the reading because he is called "one of the most interesting writer of these years". Well, this time too, the people choice makes me very astonished. And I proudly disagree.

A Death in the Family

Buona lettura a tutti e buon 1 Settembre!
