Divertente, intelligente, ironico, istruttivo, pieno, femminile.
Bellissimo. Voglio vederlo assolutamente a teatro.

It's a lifetime that I want to read this book. I've always heard of it, unsuspecting people went to see it at the theater, one of those books that you cannot ignore the existence, that maybe you look out from the shelves of the library, but that you actually never read.
When finally, this month, I decided to read it, I would have given me a slap for putting so much time!
What a wonderful book!
Fun, intelligent, ironic, informative, full, feminine.
A series of stories, interspersed with real facts, of women of all kinds who tell about their vagina.
Very beautiful. I want to see it absolutely at the theater.
It will be one of the most consulted books in my library!

The Vagina Monologues

Maybe because it's not the first Scandinavian area novel I read, but I always realize the difference that the geographical area makes, the environment, in which the writer grows and lives.
In this novel, for example, there is a thin, essential aspect, a certain go straight to the point without getting lost in useless turns of words and in useless descriptions. To make the comparison exaggerated, there is nothing about the slowness and the lush descriptions of a certain magical realism typical of the South American countries.
Even the main figures of this novel are two. Two opposite mirrors. How Katri is cold, calculating, determined, Anna is childish, she prefers to be cheated but to maintain good relations, distracted, she prefers not to think about responsibilities and to live in her world of paintings and rabbits, which she secretly hates.
The meeting / clash between these two figures can only leave marks.
The book is a nice reading, I appreciated its linearity. Linearity and hardness that is found in the protagonists and in their knowledge, approach and clash. It is a game of power, almost spontaneous small steps forward but which hide a determined will.
In short, a particular, interesting book. The first I read about this author.

The true deceiver

We are at the beginning of the twentieth century, in England, and three young women, Bessie, Alice and Margaret meet a man and get married. Up to here everything is normal. But another thing the three women have in common: all three die drowned in a bathtub, a few days after the wedding.
The coincidence doesn't escape the British police who, with the  available at the time, manages to stop the bigamist. The main witness for the prosecution, Dr. Bernard Spilsbury, who thanks to his experience as a forensic pathologist, worthy of our modern CIS, brings the processes to their right conclusion.
Jane Robins retraces the true story of Dr. Spilsbury, from the first cases to the most sensational ones like that of the brides drowned in the bathtub. In the background, the meticulous reconstruction of the England of time, a changing society, the feminist suffragette movement, and the threat of war.
Although I am not a reader fond of crime and trial reconstructions, I found this book very interesting for the accuracy of the details, both those more relevant to people and those of the historical period.
Another reading that could be good for this period, in which we need interesting but also and especially compelling readings. And this book answers all these requirements.

The first book I've read by Zadie Smith, but certainly not the first written. By Smith I've read various articles, short essays, stories... but never a complete novel. As a reader, there is definitely a difference between the brevity of the article and the complexity of the novel.
In On Beauty, the protagonists are two families, the Belsey and the Kipps. They are bond by love, sex, friendship and above all, at the bottom of it all, a great rivalry.
These are the dynamics within families and among the families that move the book. Exceptional characters, I talk about my favorite, Kiki. Dark-skinned woman with an irrepressible physicality and great temperament. Married to Howard, the incarnation of the saying "opposites attract". They have three teenage children, all different, with a big heart and great ideals, but also with a great impulsiveness, cross and delight of their parents.
I love how Kiki relates to her family, the generosity she expresses, with her family and the rest of the world. But even when she is betrayed, when she is disappointed, she brings out as an exceptional character.
The intellectual clash in this book is embodied by the two heads of families, a clash about the art of Rembrandt and the way of living life. And on the concept of beauty.
Passion instead, is the one that moves the whole life.
Beautiful book, somewhere slower. But anyway my first test passed by Smith.

I started this book not because I was desperately anxious to read it, but because my favorite actor said in an interview to have appreciated it. Since I trust the man's head, fond of Shakespeare like me, I decided to read it.
He probably did not impress me as he did with him, but I liked it.
Everything starts with Purity, called Pip, the protagonist of the book. She lives in a squat, has a student debt that she can not repay, a suffocating mother. One too good for this book, if it had been reality she would have been eaten alive.
Moving forward, the other protagonists of this book, Andreas, Tom, Anabel, appear around her. I would like to talk more about it, but I should reveal elements of the plot, and I would like to avoid spoilers.
But I can say that the first part I could hardly read it. Slightly slow, probably due to the introduction of Purity, which is the character that least fascinated me. Once we talk about the other characters, and their stories, the narrative proceeds more quickly and the book becomes interesting. The ending is a twist orchestrated well by Franzen, something you would not expect but on which then reflecting, everything comes back and everything makes sense.
It is a modern world, where the Internet has now been the master and is now an essential point in our lives. Everything goes from there, everything is sought there. But evidently something still escapes the eye of Big Brother...
An interesting book, with a second part more pleasant to read.
Very modern, a book that deals with the world in which we find ourselves. But please, try not to be good-natured like Pip, it does not work!

E l'ho ripreso. Stavolta in lingua originale. E ho fatto bene.

This book had a two-step story. I've heard about it because when it was released in Italy everybody talked about it and it intrigued me. Then one morning, by bus to go to work, I downloaded the preview of the book to get an idea from the first pages. I read it during the journey and the first impression was not phenomenal... I already imagined what would have been the ending and I found a not so great book, maybe a step above the average.
But then, my mind kept thinking about it... in short, was it possible that it had done all this talking about itself, without having any kind of merit? It seemed too strange.
And I took it back. This time in the original language. And I did well.
The story is interesting and captivating, Eleanor is a splendid character, the final is not predictable at all (and I'm one that has a minimum resistance to the predictable finals).
The plot is original and the theme is treated with the right delicacy and seriousness without being gloomy and bleak.
In short, after a (my) false start, the novel wins. Beautiful, to read.

There has been much talk about this book, and my curiosity has been tickled. I went to a library not so close to me to borrow it and read it.
Here, never believe in rave reviews. Because, as far as I'm concerned, this book is a colossal bullshit.
Chris and Sylvere, husband and wife in crisis, meet Dick, cultural critic and colleague of Sylvere.
From here starts a series of mental overthinkings, erotic fantasies and a series of letters, mainly addressed by Chris, to Dick where he builds her own world in which she and Dick are bound by something that is only in her head. The object of this mania is first intrigued, then annoyed, and the end is definitely the part that gave me more satisfaction.
I wanted to finish the reading a bit for masochism, and a little to know how it would end.
I really wonder how it is possible to consider it as an important book for women. After a long time we have reported the brainwashing of fairy tales and the figure of Prince Charming, it seems to me that this is worse. We are at the limits of stalking.
And luckily at least I did not spend any money...

O no?
Poche pagine, tanto significato.

Short story, not even a hundred pages. One reads in a very short time but, to be honest, remains much more in the head.
Nunez, by accident, ends up in the country of the blind, believed by him only a legend. He arrives believing that he can easily subjugate those people, he ends up realizing that instead to survive he will have to be like them, and that what he believes to be an advantage, in reality, is his greatest weakness.
It was a reading that left me with a sense of anguish, a sense of danger. The peak is reached more or less in the middle of the story, when the different becomes a hunting prey, as different, as it is not understood by those who have a limited "vision".
Abandon yourself to become like others? Or not?
A few pages, so much meaning.
My first reading of Wells, which I had been postponing for a long time and it happened by chance. For sure, not the last one.

On the occasion of the 70th birthday of who I consider my personal God as an atheist, Einaudi has published this short book, with an unpublished story and the speech he gave for the conferment of the Bottari Lattes Grinzane Award.
The story, unpublished in Italy, is the story of two friends who are writers and a perfect crime, a crime done quietly, and completed I would say almost elegantly. A crime that could be discussed in front of a cup of tea.
The essay "The Self" instead answers the question "What is a self, an incontrovertible biological entity or a cultural product, refined above all by art and literature?" The answer given by Ian McEwan is a kind of ego history in literature, including his own way of looking at the subject.
The story is fascinating, the essay is interesting. But then, really, but what do I say?
It's Ian McEwan. Even the shopping list written by him would be interesting. The man has a mastery of writing (and the immense Italian translator, Susanna Basso, manages to make it in an excellent way) and an elegance and a naturalness hardly equable. If twin souls existed in literature, he would be mine.

When I borrowed this volume from the library, I expected a life story, tales of particular clients, a certain philosophy of life. Instead, or rather, not only, this is the story of what it means to be a bookseller, daily and materially. It is not the story of the gruff but gentle bookseller, but it is the reality of all the booksellers of all the bookstores of Italy. The management techniques, the customer service, the importance of dusting the books, not only for a question of cleanliness and order, but to know the shelves visually.
And then yes, at the end of the book there are interventions by people like Roberto Calasso and Carlo Feltrinelli, and a preface of the ever-regretting Umberto Eco, one who had a knowledge about books as few.
A technical book, without great philosophical proclamations, a book that teaches the technique of being booksellers. For the practice, the shop and the humility to learn.
Very interesting volume, different from what I expected. But as proof of the success of a bookshop is that you go out after buying the book you did not expect, in this case I read and appreciated a book that I did not expect.

Ops...
Come è successo? Non so... Yes, we can!

Vi giuro, tornerò come prima!
