A long time ago I've read my last book by her. That's because the main character of the Shopaholic series was starting to make me freaking out that I couldn't stand another book like those.
In general the books signed MW have a different mood, less silly and the characters are darkest. The main character of this novel is a real bad girl.
Fleur is an expert funeral crasher. She infiltrates at funeral services of rich men' wives and in their beds, and then runs away after have stolen a lot of thousands of pounds from their bank account.
The widower on duty this time is Richard Favour, but this time someone hasn't anymore the slightest intention to celebrate her own birthday in the wrong day and not know how to answer at "Where do you live" question.
It's a nice novel, without any demanding, perfect for a relaxed reading. More, I'm so thankful there is no such a stupid character as Rebecca Bloomwood... And as far as Fleur is stereotyped and Richard is so good that he is unreal and he can be only the character of a novel, the writing of Mrs Wickham is so good that it is a very pleasant reading.

I've read this book for two reasons: Mutis is one of my brother's favourite writer, and I trust his judgment; then because Mutis has been a great friend of Marquez and I supposed to find in the book what Marquez makes me feel, and it was a yes and a no.
The book is beautiful, flowing, he writes magnificently. Another main character, a hot, charming, luxurious Panama.
The two female characters, Ilona and Larissa, are perfect. Sensual, smart, sharp. I liked less, I must admit, Maqroll, that would be the real main character. For me, he is more one who look at the others while they act. Business partner of Ilona, but the real boss is her. While Larissa is magical and surreal, she comes from another world.
Two no go characters, in every meaning.
So, a beautiful book, perfect with the hot summer in Sardinia. But it didn't completely make me over.
The door is open, Mr Mutis, and this is just the first book I've read by you. Reach me out.

Ilona arrives with the rain

England in the middle of '800, old families of incalculable wealth and power, a new middle class, intelligent and hard working, that rises through the ranks, social climbers and young lord good for nothing. This is the social context in which this novel is set. Belgravia, still the most expensive neighborhood in London, cradle of the English wealth, is the background.
A secret between two families, the Trenchards, bourgeois enriched thanks to the excellence instinct for business of the head of the family, James, and the Brockenhursts, family from the highest aristocracy, firmly believers in the class system. There is a special bond between the two women, Anne and Caroline, two strong women, pragmatic, intelligent, ready for anything to protect their own family and reputation. And then Charles, the mysterious man born and grown up in a little country parish and came to London, modern business man following his plans of expansion.
This story remembers a lot Downton Abbey, Fellowes' most celebrated creature. But this is what we like and the writer is a master in it.
A knowledge to the minimum details even of hairstyles brings us directly in that world. The twists are wisely nursed, as soon as it is too close, Fellowes abruptly changes scenery, leaving the reader short of breath and with a strong desire to keep going with the reading. In this, a big coup has been publishing every chapter once each in ebook format. For me is a huge struggle not being able to read the entire book in one night. But making the expectations raise and the attention too, is worthy of an evil genius. And Fellowes, he is, indeed.
A beautiful novel. If you love England, are fascinated by the class system, want to read a story written magnificently, this is the perfect book.

Even if she is one of the most famous writer in the world, I must admit  my knowledge of Mrs Allende is pretty short. I've read her most famous book, "The House of the Spirits" but after that I didn't read any. In my mind, she is famous for writing books set in a south-american world, a kind of female Marquez. With "Ripper" that line started to move, and this "The Japanese Lover" undermined it for good.
Alma Mendel, then Belasco, is a young woman born in Poland and then sent away by her parents to avoid the Second World War. Grown up at her uncle's house in California, she studies in Boston and decides to become an artist. Her constant datum points are the cousin Nathaniel and the friend Ichimei.
We live her story and her family's thanks to Irina, worker at Lark House, the retirement home where the by now old lady made her been admitted to spend her last years.
Alma is a beautiful character. Determined, impulsive, spontaneous, elegant. Her story takes you completely, the Belasco family comes alive thanks to the wonderful writing of Mrs Allende. You would love to live with them, in that so chic way. Driving around in a bright coloured Smart car, and a suitcase with just silky slip in. And let yourself go with passion, love, life.
Wonderful.

(The only doubt I have is about the cover... why there is the picture of a Japanese female model when in the book the Japanese lover is a man? Well, my doubts...)

Adesso o negli anni Cinquanta, poco è cambiato.

He, she, the other woman. More than the mentioned "Everything I know about relationship, I've learnt by the woman who didn't want to marry my father", the title of this book could be "History and phenomenology of adultery, between tv, cinema and real life".
From Monica Vitti to Jennifer Aniston (that meanwhile from being the Betrayed Wife became the Champion of every woman who would must desire to get pregnant and instead prefer a good hamburger), and then Scandal and Man Men, the story of her own father in love with the nurse and her mother Jackie-Kennedy-inspired is our paradigm for adultery. Because his wife doesn't leave him because has a traitor husband is better than has none, the lover picked him just because he's married and easier to deal with, and the man who thinks he's so irresistible with two women doing everything for him.
Now or in the Fifties, little is changed. For sure, the ways to communicate. Sms, Whatsapp changed the relationships totally. Everything is easier, being discovered too.
The author trace a very frank picture of human relationships, leaving no place for fake sentimentalism. Ironic and smart, I love her writing, her explanations of single quotes from tv shows and movies. Apropos, now I go to the library to borrow all those movies by Gassman and Scola.

Ave Mary e Ave Michela.

It happened a lor of times that someone told me something about this book. Users of the library, discussions with friends, people met randomly. So, here I am, reviewing this book. I have to say firstly that I really like Michela Murgia, her style is so harsh and quick. No roundaabout expressions, she calls a spade a spade.
In here, there are a lot of things to say and we had too much inventive interpretation but always close to chauvinism. Don't think about Dan Brown, no travelling with our imagination in here, but just facts as they are.
I must admit, I'm really pissed off. More I read and more I was bothered by what I already knew and in shock by what I discovered. I realized that, thanks to the Catholic Churc, a world where a man can become Pope and a woman to the max abbess in a monastery, we as women have to fight to destroy an imprisoning stereotype that they, men, created. The own Virgin Mary, an icon of perfection and submission to the will of God, an image of woman so perfect, our model, but an impossible model to reach. Sacrifice, submission, pain. This is what world expeccts from us for being considered as a saint Christian woman.
So, here I am. It's a while I'm an atheist. But some ideas and prejudices are so deeply-rooted in our thinking that we still have to deal with them. We all had the suggestion of not sleeping with a man we like, we must look pure and restive to something "dirty". Or, how many wives, even if not religious, are blamed for being career women, not thinking enough at the family, not being "angels of the hearth"? And how many men can say the same thing?
Ave Mary and Ave Michela. My atheism is in a very safe place.

This is one of those book a read must and must not to read.
I explain first why not. In general, an avid reader has a ToRead List, always too long for an average lifetime. This book will bring other point to this list, so it will be available in hardcover edition.
Why to read it. Because Hornby is funny, smart, and manages to express the coolness of being a reader. Because we avid readers are funny people and it's an honour to deal with us.
More, because my colum of "Readings of the month" started after I've read for the first time one of his articles on his readings of the month. Probably it is not an actual revolutionary idea but I like that he inspired it.
So, the book is interesting and funny, and tells about books. What do you want more?
Good job, Nick!

More and more convinced that Roth deserves a Nobel Prize. I say again and again, considering that at about pag. 60 I have even thought to quit the reading. Guess how much were powerful the following pages for making me change my idea.
David Kepesh define himself as an emancipated man. Professor of literary criticism, he has sex with a lot of his students and look at his married and boring collagues with the same sense of superiority they look at him.
As long as in his life arrives Carmela. Cuban, beautiful, sexy, with a perfect breast. And even if the beginning of their relationship is the same of the others of him, going on the mature man will discover feelings close to a bond. He didn't want relationships marked with monogamy and sharing feelings, and now it is fractured, stroke on heart by a young woman unaware of her power.
A strong book, powerful emotions. Of course there is that racy sexuality typical of Roth, but his so intense writing make it essential to the story.
Beautiful, first pages to go beyond to arrive at the true beauty.

Perfetto, sempre.

At this point, who follows me a little bit and read this blog, knows my devotion for Ian McEwan. In my opinion, he is the best living writer, not just for England.
This book is the umpteenth proof. It's a wonder.
Peter is a little boy with a special gift. A great fantasy.
He daydreams and his dreams become reality. He looks like staring at the wall, but actually he's living incredible adventures.
This created by the brilliant mind of Ian McEwan. A so beautiful writing that we are into the story too and leave as reawaken by an amazing dream.
This book is written by purpose with a stylistic canon of children's fiction, but McEwan knows how to give his particular mark even in this case. As always, perfect.

I think that, just because the quotes in it, this is one of the most famous book in the world. Just the title, it is written in a lot of Whatsapp's personal status.
It's a collection of nine "commencement speeches", those ones at the end of the academic year to graduating students given in general by well noted speakers. How to forget the super famous "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish" by Steve Jobs? And in this case, it's now very well known the "If This Isn't Nice, What Is?"
There are nine speeches about various subject, from the US Presidents to the writer's uncle, from his favourite teacher at the University to what we have that the billionaires haven't. Very ironic and funny speeches, but in their simplicity they hide truths. Simple, of course, just because Vonnegut wrote it, his style, that what makes it unparalleled. Giving good suggestions making the students and the readers laugh is not easy!
A very nice book, to read at least once in a life.

If This Isn't Nice, What Is?: Advice to the Young

Ci ho sperato e ci spero tutt'ora.

How do you start a review about a story so hard? The only way I know is starting by the facts. Crime news in the newspaper.
Irina Lucidi is an Italian lawyer, she speaks four languages, she has a solid international career. She lives in Switzerland, she is married with Mathias, they are parents of two twins, Alessia e Livia. They are separated like a lot of other couples, discussions about agreements on school and holidays. Not a friendly relationship, normal tensions, considered the "swiss" personality of Mathias, a man I can easily called "Freak Control".
The 30th January of 2011, Mathias and the girls disappear. Mathias commit suicide a few days later. Nobody will know anything more about the girls.
Concita de Gregorio tells the story of Irina, the story of a woman who had to deal with the worst nightmare for a mother: don't know where their daughters are, not even have an idea if they are dead or if they are alive somewhere. Forgetting is impossible. Always remember, keep them in her heart, hoping that some day someone will have informations for her, something will be found, even the littlest proof.
And, in the mean time, keep living. Create a new spring. A new love, with a kind person who knows how to love her.
Irina's story is build through various levels, the memories of her marriage, the reenactment of the inquiries, the letters to girls' teacher, grandmother, brother, judge, thought in first person.
I didn't leave this book for a moment as long as I finished it, because I hoped with all my heart that I missed any news, maybe I missed the girls' finding. I hoped and I still do.

Tristemente attuale. Ora basta. Altri otto anni così no.

"Women have more familiarity with pain". And with strenght, patience, with standing by the side of the person we choose, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. Marie Trintignant, beautiful and fragile, killed by the singer Bertrand Cantat.
Violence against women, in the family, by a partner, various kind, from a stronger one to a weaker one, is the subject of this book. There are a lot of stories, true or not, modern and contemporary. How is it possible that, from the dawn of the world, intelligent women or less, emancipated or less, rich or less, feel the obligation of suffer? That still believe they can "save" who hurts them?
This book has been written in 2008. Eight years ago. In eight years, nothing has changed and this book is still current.
Sadly current. Now stop. No more eight years.

Bad love

Vincenzo Malinconico è bravissimo a cantarsele e a suonarsele.

I haven't made up my mind yet on how to start this review. Because I'm between two fronts.
The author write very well, the book flows away rapid, it's funny and smart.
On the other side, a kind of female air of superiority to men and those like the main character. Vincenzo Malinconico is very good at, as we say in Italian, singing and playing for himself. He analyzes his own emotions but he doesn't know how to face them, still lost in the memory of a woman but to forget her he just has sex with other two women who are the embodiment of unavailability. The man who better knows and understands him is his psycoanalist. He's against emotions but talks about it a lot.
He talks a lot about Italian music of Seventies too. But not just about memories and those times, it's just a deep sentimental and syntactic analysis. And then you wonder how is not possible that a girl who looks like exactly as Emmanuelle Beart keeps herself by laughing in his face... Who knows...
I must admit, looks like the imperfections are more than the merits. But actually I suggest the reading of this novel. Because it's nice, funny, a pleasant writing. If you really like a person, you don't stop it because he/she is not thin and doesn't love to read how you do. Nobody's perfect. And we all are favourable to emotions.

I am against emotions

This book has been a disappointment. I've read one book by Mrs Quindlen and I really liked it. There was that kind of wisdom typical of grandmas. Instead this one...
It's the story of two sisters, Meghan and Bridget. Meghan is a kind of Oprah Winfrey, famous, rich, successful. She is married with the perfect husband, Evan, and they have a son, Leo. Meghan is determined, she always gets what she wants, around her there is an aura of power. Bridget is very different. After she changed a lot of different jobs, now she is a social worker in a children's home in the poorest side of the Bronx, she is engaged with a usually absent and grumpy policeman, lives in a small apartment.
Going on with the story, of course, the two sisters grow up and argue with each other, while the life goes one, in good or bad.
Well, in my opinion everything looks the same of a lot of other novels set in New York. Written by good authors. I expected something more from Anna Quindlen. Something less presumptuous and simple. Some unpredicted pearl of wisdom. It's one of those book you read and then you go over because nothing particular remains.

Rise and shine

Buona lettura a tutti e buone vacanze!
