gennaio 2015

Not that kind of girl

When I watched the first episodes of Girls, the tv series created by Lena Dunham, my first thought has been "That's horrible!"A modern reinterpretation of Sex and the City, four girls with four different personalities, who work, study, live in New York and have a lot of sex. I watched the first episodes asking me why I was watching that stuff, and most of all what kind of terrible sin the main character did in another life to be forced to act in those awkward sex scenes. But, I didn't stop watching and now I'm waiting for the new season.
Same thing for the book. I started reading wondering what kind of life has Lena Dunham, what kind of choice she does to always find herself in awkward situation, and why writing a book telling that stuff to the entire world, stuff that I would never tell to anybody, even the confessor at death's door.
But I finished it and now I'm writing this review.
Miss Dunham is honest, maybe too much. She tells us the life of a girl that, whatever reviews could think, is definitely not my life. It's Dunham's life. And it's always interesting to shot a glance to other people's life. And, from her life, shows through a lack of self-confidence, a desperate need to be loved, accepted, to be good. And people falls in this run. Everybody is hurt. But then, you pick yourself up again. And yes, this is something Lena learned and us too. Maybe, I didn't need to act sex scenes or have sex with the most ridicolous guy in my school.

I am fully convinced that, depending on wich country a writer comes from, they have a different writing style. It's like a distinctive feature. Of course it's not about every writer, but there is a kind of national style. French and russian writers are very similar, as english and americans, or the south-americans.
The book I'm reviewing today is easily recognisable. The story tells about a woman, exploited wife for years, being abandoned by her husband, in love with another woman, and how, after a first moment of discouragement, becomes a new and happy woman, thanks to her children and her friends. Now, it's like I've read the same book telling the same story a million of times. And everytime, by coincidence, they were middle-aged women, english or irish. In other words, it was a huge AlreadyRead from the first pages.
Nothing to say about the wiriting, it's a nice book, flows pleasantly. The main character is a little banal. Her friend who comes from the other part of the world, after centuries, and they are friends again, like nothing is changed... well, some reasonable doubt. The husband, well, he is a huge asshole. But... it is the same old novel. Nothing new. The same old story in other hundreds novels. A pleasant book, but I need something more and something new.

In the beginning

This books has been the perfect partner in a solitary evening at home. And it was the best partner ever!
It's a collection of quotes from his Essays. There is a sentence for every important moment in life, from love to sex, from goodness to sins, from women to men. I wrote down so much of them that would be easier re-write entirely the book itself. But the most important thing is that, I didn't know it before, Montaigne has a lot of absolutely modern ideas. It's amazing how a writer lived in the '500 is so modern while a lot of people now looks like they are down on earth from those centuries. Not mentioning that he has a view of good sense and totally secular, a thing that made me appreciate him more.
It's important suggest intelligent books, well written and rationals, in a world where we need rationality and good sense.
It's a pride for me to introduce you this book and this author. You have to re-read it at least once in a year (there are so many books to read in the world, I think once in a year is enough).

Molto bello.

Here you are The Middlestein, a typical American Jewish family. The parents, Edie and Richard, a former-lawyer her and a pharmacist him. Their son and daughter, the stubborn Robin and the easy-going Benny, married with Rachelle, the princess. Their children, the twins Josh and Emily, how much he is educated and kind, she is a typical lunatic teenager.
Everything is fine, as long as... Edie starts to eat excessively, because she is bored and for a desire of invisibility, because food is a fantastic place where hide herself. Richard can't make it anymore, and file for the divorce. The family balance is broken.
Going on with the reading, we learn better to know every character. And they aren't characters in black-and-white, they aren't good or bad. The writer tells about human people, with their strenghts and weaknesses. Richard isn't the monster who leave alone his sick wife, Emily isn't just an annoying teenager, Edie isn't just a shabby fat woman who is interested just to eat.
A family's portrait, its dinamycs, life, choices. A good novel, well written, a flowing writing. Beautiful.

The last book I have to read written by Gabo, and I am very sorry. It was so beautiful have that little tower with those fantastic covers that was waiting for me, and now, looking at them placed in the bookshelf make me a little bit mournful. Of course, there are other books by him, I didn't finish but... you know what I mean!
For sure who would understand me is the Professor, the main character of this book. Days before his 90ies birthday, he decides to allow himself a night with a prostitute from the house of Rosa Cabarcas, but he wants her young and virgin. It's the moment when Delgadina, how the professor calls her, goes in his life and in ours. He discovers love thanks to her, a love where sex doesn't count but instead souls and lives are bound together. He is taken by love, he is on fire, he fells himself again young and strong. But he feels the strong desire of love, that almost being sick of love.
It's the last one of the Gabo's greatest novel, and there is a big difference compared with One Hundred Years of Solitude. Years passing and human mind is more reflective, more careful to memories... but yet more inclined to live deeply last things, passionately, letting ourselves go.
A beautiful novel, heart wrenching.
Like me, still roused by these pages and sad because these last pages.

Memories of My Melancholy Whores

Comunque sempre bella, magica, sempre Marquez.

The forth book I've read by Marquez and, as always happens to me when I read few book of the same author in succession, after a While the appeal goes down and I appreciate that book less than it really deserves.
I'm afraid it happened for this "Of love and other demons". The story of Sierva Maria is fascinating, but I loved it less than the other ones. I must say that I started it just the day after I finished "Love in the Time of Cholera", one of the more beautiful books I've ever read. The competition was maybe too hard!
There is magic, of course, actually it is strenghtened by the story of this kind of SouthAmerican fairy, grown up with the African slaves of her father and from them she had learned language and religion. The comparison with the Catholic world outside is awful. The girl, bitten by a rabid dog, is believed possessed and the labours of a necromancer doctor and a young exorcist in love with her don't amount to anything... The convent where she is confined to being "cured" turns to be her prison. Her parents don't count for anything, a mother who hates her and doesn't stand her proximity, an unable and
useless father. The only strong character in here is she, Sierva Maria, wonderful creature. A novel born by a real experience of the young journalist Marquez, who takes this story and creates a character of great power and mistery.
A beautiful story, I really like it but I am not shocked. Anyway, beautiful, magic, so Marquez.

Of Love and Other Demons

I have dedicated my summer to the novels of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In my opinion, their South-American settings are perfect for this season and, more, his writing lets go me a lot. It is evocative, almost magical. Even when, as in this book, there is a murder.
The plot of this novel is almost surreal. In the town of Manaure, a magnificent wedding has been just celebrated, between the stranger Bayardo San Roman and the beauty Angela Vicario. Next morning, the twin brothers of Angela, Pedro and Pablo look for Santiago Nasar to kill him. The twins don't even hide their intentions, on the contrary, almost every resident of the town knows these. But even if they know them, for a reason or another, for casualness or wrong impressions, even if they meet Santiago they don't warn him of the danger.
The book recalls, such as a detective story, the morning, the Santiago and other people's moves, the first night of wedding. We discover that the twins kill Santiago because the honour of their sister Angela, but the truth is never verified, leaving the reader with a doubt. I keep suggesting myself and everyone the reads of his books, his writing so flowing and powerful, he leaves in the reader the entirety of a powerful and unique talent as it is his talent.

Months ago, this book was one of the most popular books in the news in Italy. Bot not because its release or because the writer was at some important literary festival. No. Everyone was talking about it because two teachers of an high-school in Rome suggested it as class-reading. Nothing bad, you'll say. What shocked the public opinion is that in the book there is a scene of homosexual sex and, for this reason, the two teachers have been reported of "Corruption of younger people". The charge, led by two associations of right-wing, then found validation in several movements of extreme right wing, that showed frankly ridicolous banners, and some catholic press.
This is the reason why, shortly before my own reading, I already knew this book. And, after the last page after a day of reading-non-stop, I can say, to be honest, that nobody had to even think of make a charge because of it, absolutely. Not just because the scene is so short that you barely are aware of it, but because I can't believe that students of an high-school in 2014 could be so impressionable. And most of all, because it steals importance to the reading of a beautiful book. I say it frankly, it's a wonderful book. I devoured in not even 12 hours and I loved every single character and page. The love story of Giose and Christian is so beautiful and romantic and upright that I can't really realize how someone can devalue and ruin it, limiting it just to the sexual part. Two beautiful characters, the world literature really need it. I loved them so much, and I love the little woman Eva, finishing this book almost broke my heart.
Wonderful.

You are the way as you are

Who knows, maybe if this novel was been written by anyone else I would hate it. Probably I wouldn't finished it. But, Francesco Piccolo wrote it, and everything changes. Because, the pen changes a lot of things. And he is able to make reasonable someone who is matter-of-factly one of the most bastard characters I've ever met.
The main character, never called by name, the typical man, is married with Teresa and is father of a little girl, Beatrice, who he loves a lot. But he is a real bastard! He fucks with every woman he meets, he has three relationships of years and other two sometimes. But, he doesn't feel any kind of guilt-feelings, on the contrary, looks like he enjoys this uncertainty, his wife could leave him any moment because she could discover him unfaithful. I would like to tell you something more, keep telling you about this book and the behaviour of this one, but it's better if you make an idea of him by yourself. In spite of how much is bastard this character, how much meaknesses he has, mr Piccolo is so good in cheating the reader and you arrive at a point where you almost understand the Bastard's mind, you almost understand and excuse. Almost, because from the first page I wished him a big punch in the face by his wife.

The man's separation

Genius and naughtiness, tells the subtitle. And Picasso was a genius, definitely.
He lived surrounded by women from his birth, an authoritative mother who he loved unconditionally, in his life there will be always women, sometimes at the same moment, like a kind of harem. And from them he will take their soul and the inspiration, as much that just Francois will decide to break their relationship, while the others won't be able to resist to his attraction and magnetism. For everyone of them, in this book you can read their relationship, from the first meeting to the break-up. There is the first wife Olga, Francois, Jacqueline the last one who, at the moment of his death, will want just for herself a man who divided with the rest of the world when he was alive.
The book is very interesting, divided in chapters that are usually overlapping, as the lovestories with these women of Picasso, probably a man that scarcely can stay alone with his art. A complicated man, a Minotaur, as he sees himself. And in his paintings women are pictured always very sexualized, and looks like he wants to, again, steal their souls and take possession of them. A possessive man, he wanted those women entirely under his power. And just women of strong personality manage to live by his side.
An interesting book about a side of a great artist that I wanted to examine in depth. But, maybe I expected more, the way of writing didn't touch me, looked like a catalogue of an exhibition. Is it fortuitous?

E fu amore a prima lettura.

Two years ago, persuaded by my nephew, I started to read Harry Potter. It was love at first sight. This year, my niece, his big sister, persuaded me to read this book. It's difficult being more beautiful than Harry Potter... yes indeed.
I want to start by the positive notes, and they are a lot. The book is very flowing, I read it in two days. The lovestory is romantic and fatal, tears flow down especially in the last part. After all is said and done, I liked it, it's pleasant but sad too.
Unfortunately, this book, in my opinion, doesn't deserve 5 stars. There is just one, but important, negative note: the book is set for a public of teenagers, like Twilight and other novels. Not just because the two main characters are teenagers themselves, but truly because the narration, so easy, too much. Their lovestory is filled with striking quotes, from the beginning, being at the end almost mushy. People told me the movie is very touching, and I can't stop thinking that, maybe, this is the main purpose of this book too... runaway if you consider the subject.
So, the book is pleasant but it isn't worthy of high valutations. It deserves one more star because there are very touching parts but in a world of striking quotes and main characters who, in terms of misfortune, could stand a chance with Romeo and Juliet, my tiny tears bothered me a little bit.

John Green
The fault in our stars

- E tu cosa vedi in me?
- Beh, anche tu li odi. Per quello che ti hanno fatto.
- E cioè?
- Ti hanno trasformato in qualcosa di…
- Orrendo?…
- No, non proprio.

Lui capisce me, e io capisco lui.

It's pretty easy from my blog to notice that I am struggling with my love for Francis Scott Fitzgerald. I think that his way of writing goes into my soul completely, looks like he's talking to me, he understands me, he writes just for me.
He understands me, and I understand him.
He is in my head, he knows what I think, how I think, my vision of everything. Because, it is his.
And this book? God, I loved this book until the end. Looks like a fall to hell, last pages destroyed me, ripped out my soul.
Nobody else can write in this way, nobody else can do this to me, except Scott. And I love him.
