Settimane in cui non riuscivo a leggere più di venti pagine senza annoiarmi, un mese, quello di novembre, di letture iniziate e abbandonate.
Poi ho guardato la libreria, i libri ancora da leggere, Stephen King non avrebbe mai potuto annoiarmi!
Iniziato dopo pranzo, in un freddo e piovoso venerdì pomeriggio (freddo sicuramente, piovoso non so perché per ore non ho guardato fuori dalla finestra), finito poco dopo l'ora di cena con pause per sgranchirmi le gambe e prepararmi da mangiare.
Bellissimo, a ogni livello.
Il racconto degli orrori che Annie provoca a Paul, un salire di orrore e crudeltà; lo studio della mente di Paul, come reagisce all'incubo e come riesce a scrivere il romanzo migliore della sua carriera; in ultimo, ma non importante, una vera lezione di letteratura dentro il romanzo, come si scrive un libro, i trucchi a cui ricorrono gli scrittori, la febbre di scrivere in qualunque situazione, la nascita e la crescita di una storia.
Oserei dire, geniale. Perché solo un genio, un uomo dotato di un incredibile talento come King avrebbe potuto scrivere un romanzo del genere.

Weeks in which I couldn't read more than twenty pages without getting bored, a month, this November, of started and abandoned books.
Then I looked at my shelves, the books still to be read, Stephen King will save me!
I started after lunch, on a cold and rainy Friday afternoon (cold for sure, rainy I don't know because I didn't look out the window for hours), finished shortly after dinner with breaks to stretch my legs and cooking something to eat.
Beautiful, at every level.
The tale of the horrors that Annie causes to Paul, a rise of horror and cruelty; the study of Paul's mind, how he reacts to the nightmare and how he manages to write the best novel of his career; last but not least, a real literary lesson within the novel, how to write a book, the tricks that writers use, the fever to write in any situation, the birth and growth of a story.
I dare say, brilliant. Because only a genius, a man with an incredible talent like King could have written such a novel.

In questi giorni di fine ottobre, con l'avvicinarsi di Halloween, torna sempre più prepotente la voglia di leggere qualcosa a tema. Da sempre appassionata di streghe, di queste donne indipendenti, forti, decise, potenti, non potevo non avere questo libro della Abeditore, sono corsa in libreria appena è uscito!
Parto prima di tutto dal fattore estetico, come al solito la Abeditore non delude, copertina meravigliosa, illustrazioni all'interno bellissime! L'effetto "antico" della grafica sempre affascinante!
Ho apprezzato particolarmente la prefazione femminista di Giulia Ciarapica, molto interessante e con qualche spunto di lettura in più per approfondire la questione. E sempre per rimanere nell'ambito, c'è una ulteriore attenzione che ho apprezzato. Nella maggior parte dei casi, quando si tratta di raccolte di racconti di genere horror/fantastico di autori del passato, e ne ho diverse, in genere la selezione dei racconti riporta quasi esclusivamente autori maschi. In questo caso, invece, c'è una buona presenza anche di autrici donne che niente di meno in qualità hanno rispetto ai loro colleghi maschi. E mi sembra anche giusto considerando che si parla di streghe!
Ultimo ma non per importanza, il contenuto è diviso tra narrativa e saggistica, quindi tra i racconti veri e propri, gli estratti dal libro "Demonologia e stregoneria" di Sir Walter Scott, documenti reali del periodo della caccia alle streghe e una appendice con i metodi di tortura... per capire fino in fondo quanto queste donne erano già condannate ancora prima di arrivarci, per colpa dell'ignoranza e del fanatismo di chi le accusava. I racconti sono divisi per temi, volendo si può anche leggere a salti.
In totale, complimenti alla Abeditore per aver pubblicato questo gioiello, personalmente lo ritengo, ad oggi, il libro più bello e interessante di una casa editrice che ci ha già abituati a libri belli e interessanti!

In these days at the end of October, with the approach of Halloween, the desire to read something about this subject returns more and more overwhelming. Always passionate about witches, these independent, strong, decisive, powerful women, I had to have this book by the Abeditore in my shelves,so I ran to the bookstore as soon as it came out!
I start from the aesthetic factor, as usual the Abeditore doesn't disappoint, wonderful cover, beautiful illustrations inside! The "antique" effect of the graphics is always fascinating!
I particularly appreciated the feminist preface by Giulia Ciarapica, very interesting and with some more reading ideas to deepen the question. And always to stay within the subject matter, there is an additional care that I appreciated. In most cases, when it comes to collections of horror / fantasy genre stories by authors of the past, and I have several, generally the selection of the stories reports almost exclusively male authors. In this case, however, there is also a good presence of female authors who have nothing less in quality than their male colleagues. And it also seems fair considering that we are talking about witches!
Last but not least, the content is divided between fiction and non-fiction, so with the fictional stories there are the extracts from the book "Demonology and witchcraft" by Sir Walter Scott, real documents from the period of the witch hunt and an appendix with the methods of torture... to fully understand how much these women were already condemned even before they got there, because of the ignorance and fanaticism of those who accused them. The stories are divided by themes, one can read it in the order one prefers.
So, congratulations to Abeditore for having published this jewel, personally I believe this is the most beautiful and interesting book of a publishing house that has already accustomed me to beautiful and interesting books!

Non sapevo nemmeno quanto mi era mancato leggere qualcosa di Piperno prima di questo libro! Il suo modo di scrivere elegante e ricercato e i suoi personaggi, che non sono mai dei modelli di vita ma hanno difetti molto terreni e umani, il protagonista non è certo un modello di virtù e simpatia, sono una miscela perfetta.
Una voce narrante senza nome, ormai in età adulta se non avanzata, ripercorre la storia della sua famiglia, da quella con i suoi genitori a quella, più allargata, in cui passa l'adolescenza dopo un terribile fatto di sangue. Da una famiglia disfunzionale perché litigiosa e con pochi soldi e tanti debiti, a una famiglia disfunzionale perché ipocrita e con tantissimi soldi. Segreti, bugie, vecchi rancori che continuano ad assediare, mancanze, ma anche una religione con un suo peso non indifferente.
Pur essendo un libro di circa 400 pagine, l'ho divorato perché dovevo sapere come sarebbe andato a finire e soprattutto catturata dalla bellezza e l'eleganza della prosa di Piperno.

I didn't even know how much I had missed reading something by Piperno before this book! His elegant and refined way of writing and his characters, who are never models of life but have very real and human flaws, the main character is certainly not a model of virtue and sympathy, they are a perfect blend.
An unnamed narrator, now in adulthood, traces the history of his family, from that with his parents to the one, more extended, in which he spends the adolescence after a terrible event. From a dysfunctional family because they are quarrelsome and with little money and a lot of debt, to a dysfunctional family because they are hypocritical and with a lot of money. Secrets, lies, old grudges that continue to lie, absences, but also a religion with its own considerable weight.
Despite being a book of about 400 pages, I devoured it because I had to know how it would end and above all captured by the beauty and elegance of Piperno's prose.

Lo spleen sarebbe la tristezza meditativa, la malinconia, ed in questa accezione la parola è usata dal poeta decadentista Charles Baudelaire.
Questa raccolta di piccole poesie in prosa, di racconti brevissimi, racconta l'anima di Parigi, il suo lato più vero, che racconti amori tragici o felici, come vivere la vita, borghesia e quartieri bassi, l'eleganza e la volgarità, le donne (e ricordiamo che Baudelaire ovviamente parla di una Parigi tardo ottocentesca, con una morale e una divisione tra i generi molto diversa rispetto all'attuale) e gli uomini di Parigi.
Alcuni pezzi sembrano facili e leggeri, ma come con la poesia è bene stare attenti alle singole parole, per non perderne il senso e anche la bellezza.
Il mio preferito è il XXXIII, "Ubriacatevi", un inno all'essere sempre appassionati di qualcosa, al farsi travolgere, al vivere la vita fino in fondo, "di vino, di poesia, di virtù, a vostro piacimento. Ma ubriacatevi!" Decisamente il mio preferito e probabilmente anche l'unico poema in prosa che mi abbia conquistata.
Insomma, davvero molto bello, da leggere a piccoli pezzi, gustandone la bellezza e cercando di comprendere appieno il mondo in cui sono stati scritti e la persona da cui sono stati scritti.

The spleen is the meditative sadness, melancholy, and in this meaning the word is used by the decadent poet Charles Baudelaire.
This collection of small prose poems, of very short stories, tells the soul of Paris, its truest side, whether it tells tragic or happy loves, how to live life, bourgeoisie and lower neighborhoods, elegance and vulgarity, women (and we remember that Baudelaire obviously speaks of a late nineteenth-century Paris, with a very different morality and division between genders than the current one) and the men of Paris.
Some pieces seem easy and light, but as with poetry it is good to pay attention to the single words, so as not to lose their meaning and also their beauty.
My favorite is XXXIII, "Be drunk", a hymn to always being passionate about something, to be overwhelmed, to live life to the full, "of wine, of poetry, of virtue, as you wish. Be drunk!" Definitely my favourite and probably the only prose poem that has won me over.
In short, very nice, to read in small pieces, enjoying the beauty and trying to fully understand the world in which they were written and the person by whom they were written.

L'ultima arrivata nella mia libreria della bibliografia di Simone de Beauvoir è questa raccolta di suoi scritti inediti. Si va dalle interviste, a pezzi su femminismo, l'essere donna, le relazioni tra gli uomini e le donne, la letteratura.
Come al solito, ogni parola uscita dalla sua penna si dimostra intensa, intelligente, talmente moderna da apparire a me, lettrice nel 2021, più avanti ancora di almeno cent'anni non solo al periodo in cui l'ha scritto ma al periodo in cui io lo sto leggendo. Un faro di luce costante che segna la strada. Che dono prezioso deve essere stato per chiunque abbia avuto la possibilità di conoscerla e sentirla parlare dal vivo.
Per me, leggere e approfondire il suo pensiero, indispensabile.

The latest addition to my personal Simone de Beauvoir's bibliography is this collection of her unpublished writings. It comes from interviews, to pieces on feminism, being a woman, relationships between men and women, literature.
As usual, every word that comes out of her pen proves to be intense, intelligent, so modern that it appears to me, a reader in 2021, still at least a hundred years ahead not only of the period in which she wrote it but of the period in which I am reading it. A guiding light that marks the way. What a precious gift it must have been for anyone who had the chance to meet her and hear her speak in person.
For me, reading and deepening her thoughts is essential.

Un romanzo basato su una storia vera, una caccia alle streghe in un paesino della Norvegia settentrionale nel 1617. La vigilia di Natale, una burrasca uccide tutti gli uomini adulti del paesino di Vardø, usciti in barca per pescare.
Le donne del paese, dopo il primo momento di smarrimento, si rendono conto di doversi rimboccare le maniche e imparare a essere indipendenti, a fare tutti quei lavori che prima erano compito degli uomini, come anche pescare.
Siamo però in tempi di caccia alle streghe e un paesino di sole donne che fanno i lavori dei maschi, dove si mischiano insieme norvegesi e lapponi e dove ancora si trovano tracce di antiche religioni, viene notato dal governatore della regione, fanatico religioso, e viene inviato a sistemare le cose il sovrintendente Cornet che vi si insedia con la giovane moglie Ursa.
Il tranquillo villaggio di donne subirà le conseguenze dell'ignoranza e del fanatismo, dove chi è diverso e indipendente subisce la malevolenza, l'invidia e le accuse di chi fino al giorno prima ospitava nella propria casa.
Un romanzo davvero bellissimo, molto forti le descrizioni del processo alle streghe e delle torture che quelle povere donne innocenti dovevano subire per colpa di credenze totalmente inventate e costruite solo per fare del male e sottomettere.
L'unico difetto che riesco a trovare è la storia d'amore che, per quanto molto romantica, risulta un po' forzata.
Romanzo consigliato per chi è interessat* al tema della caccia alle streghe e le vere storie a essa collegate.

However, we are in times of witch hunts and a village of only women who do the jobs of males, where Norwegians and Lapps mix together and where traces of ancient religions are still found, it's noticed by the governor of the region, a religious fanatic, and the Superintendent Cornet, who takes up residence there with his young wife Ursa, has been sent to sort things out.
The quiet village of women will suffer the consequences of ignorance and fanaticism, where those who are different and independent suffer the malevolence, the envy and the accusations of those who until the day before were hosted in their homes.
A truly beautiful novel, very strong descriptions of the witch trials and torture that those poor innocent women had to undergo because of totally invented beliefs, built only to harm and subdue.
The only flaw I can find is the love story which, although very romantic, is a bit forced.
Novel recommended for those interested in the theme of the witch hunt and the real stories connected to it.

Ho attraversato diverse fasi in questo libro. L'ho iniziato perchè ho adorato Palahniuk in Beautiful You ma mi aveva lasciata un po' così in Fight Club. Mi ispirava la trama ma fino al 75% di questo libro non mi ha entusiasmata. Poi il finale, boom, genio. Nel frattempo, diversi colpi di scena hanno ribaltato qualunque cosa voi poteste pensare all'inizio, quindi preparatevi a rimanere stupiti.
Se cercate un autore con cui scendere fino in fondo alle bassezze umane, qualcuno che vi racconti fino a che punto si possa scendere, Palahniuk fa per voi.
Shannon McFarland è una modella, una di quelle talmente belle che entrano in una stanza e tutti gli occhi sono per loro. Un giorno, qualcuno le spara mentre è in macchina e le porta via metà faccia... chi è un mostro? Cosa nasconde chi della bellezza ha fatto la propria vita? Fino a che punto può arrivare chi cerca se stesso, chi cerca di fare pace con se stesso, chi deve accettare il proprio corpo, chi quel corpo lo porta appresso ma che in quel corpo non si riconosce?
Promesse tante discese agli inferi e tanti colpi di scena.
Palahniuk lo si odia o lo si ama... o entrambe le cose insieme. Di sicuro, impossibile che lasci indifferenti.

I went through several stages in this novel. I started it because I loved Palahniuk in Beautiful You but it left me a bit disappointed in Fight Club. The plot inspired me but up to 75%, this book didn't thrill me. Then the finale, boom, genius. Meanwhile, several twists have overturned whatever you might have thought at first, so be prepared to be amazed.
If you are looking for an author with whom you can descend to the depths of human being, someone who will tell you how far you can go, Palahniuk is for you.
Shannon McFarland is a model, one of those so beautiful that she walks into a room and all eyes are on her. One day, someone shoots her while she's in the car and takes half her face off... who's a monster? What are hiding those who have made the beauty their own life? How far can go one who seeks oneself, who seeks to make peace with oneself, who must accept its own body, who carries that body but doesn't recognize oneself in that body?
Many descents into hell and many twists.
You either hate or love Palahniuk... or both at the same time. Certainly impossible to leave indifferent.

Ottobre ricco di belle letture, devo dire che questo mese sono molto soddisfatta. C'è stata una parte di una collezione di libri sul mito arturiano, un bel po' di stregoneria, un romanzo di uno dei miei scrittori preferiti e una raccolta di scritti di colei che per me è un modello di vita.
Sarà davvero difficile scegliere quale sia la lettura migliore del mese, ma sono abbastanza convinta che la palma andrà a Madame de Bouvier... per quanto Grimorio sia una delle più belle raccolte di storie di streghe in circolazione e Piperno abbia scritto un romanzo davvero bellissimo, sia lessicalmente sia come trama.
Devo sicuramente impegnarmi di più per fare in modo di leggere molti più libri di quanti ne abbia comprati... o meglio, sarebbe il caso evitare in toto librerie e soprattutto mercatini :D
