The last chapter of the Rachel Cusk trilogy and I must say that I am very sorry to have read the end. Faye, the book's protagonist, is on her way to a southern European country to attend a conference to promote her new book. Faye almost never speaks directly about herself, but lets other people she meets tell about themselves, about love or friendship relationships, about children, about life (Brexit also comes up), about the role that is given to women and above all, since she is attending a literary conference, writing and writers.
The voices intersect without ever overlapping, the protagonist speaks very little about herself, there is a story of the characters, a flow of consciousness and honesty. The different chats are all set in informal situations, around a table, on the plane, waiting for the sound engineers to fix the microphones, thus giving that feeling of freedom in speaking, in confiding even in a stranger or someone you know very superficially.
Although it took a long time to read it, it was a very smooth reading, very interesting, almost relaxing in being told so many different and very short stories.
For the umpteenth time I repeat, the style of Rachel Cusk has been compared to Karl Ove Knausgard's, but in my opinion here we are just on another planet. Where Knausgard has a flow of consciousness without pauses and only he speaks, here there are very fluid gaps between one person and another and the narrator is always different.
A really good book.
