Appena finito questo libro e se devo essere sincera ancora non ho capito se mi è piaciuto oppure no. Mi piace molto lo stile di Peter Cameron, ho amato alcuni suoi vecchi romanzi ma questo... non è che non mi sia piaciuto, ma non mi ha nemmeno fatto impazzire. O almeno credo. Ecco, posso dire che la sua narrazione qui ricorda molto il paesaggio in cui la storia è ambientata: un paese dell'estremo Nord dell'Europa, freddo, coperto di neve, sembra piatto ma allo stesso tempo è difficile, complicato starci.
Una coppia arriva in treno in una cittadina dal nome impronunciabile. Sono di New York, hanno un matrimonio infelice, e sono lì per andare a prendere il figlio adottato all'orfanotrofio. Il bambino, come molte volte capita nelle coppie sposate, deve essere il modo per loro per iniziare una nuova vita, mettere in sesto il loro matrimonio, dare un senso alle loro esistenze. Ma le esperienze fatte durante la loro permanenza e soprattutto le persone che incontreranno cambieranno la rotta di questo viaggio, come tutte le cose che succedono di notte...
Il romanzo è molto elegante, i personaggi e le ambientazioni tratteggiati davvero benissimo, del resto, so che Peter Cameron è un autore davvero bravissimo. Ma sarà per questa atmosfera cupa e per questo mondo così poco rassicurante in cui brillano piccoli assaggi di gentilezza e normalità dalle persone da cui meno te le aspetteresti, non sono sicura di aver amato questo libro, per questa sensazione di atmosfera pesante che mi ha lasciata.

Just finished this book and to be honest I still haven't figured out if I liked it or not. I really like Peter Cameron's style, I loved some old novels by him but this... it's not that I didn't like it, but it didn't drive me crazy either. Or at least I think. Here, I can say that his narration here is very reminiscent of the landscape in which the story is set: a country in the far north of Europe, cold, covered with snow, seems flat but at the same time it's difficult, it's complicated to stay there.
A couple arrives by train in a town with an unpronounceable name. They are from New York, are in an unhappy marriage, and they are there to pick up the adopted son from the orphanage. The child, as often happens in married couples, must be the way for them to start a new life, put their marriage in order, give meaning to their lives. But the experiences made during their stay and above all the people they will meet will change the course of this journey, like all things that happen at night...
The novel is very elegant, the characters and the settings are outlined really well, after all, Peter Cameron is a really good author. But maybe for this gloomy atmosphere and for this so uneasy world where small acts of kindness and normality arrive from the people you least expect them from, I'm not sure I loved this book, for that feeling of heavy atmosphere.
