Sono stata portata alla lettura dal fatto di averne trovato una copia in un Mercatino dell'Usato, copia risalente proprio al 1984 e soprattutto, fattore che ha scatenato il mio acquisto, un'introduzione di Umberto Eco.
Una distopia, quindi la rappresentazione immaginata di un futuro con una società altamente indesiderabile e negativa. Winston Smith, il protagonista, è bloccato in una di queste. Il mondo si trova diviso tra tre grandi superpotenze, Oceania, Eurasia ed Estasia, in guerra tra loro con diversi rovesciamenti di alleanze.
Smith vive in Oceania, la cui sede centrale dei Ministeri, contrariamente a quello che si potrebbe pensare dato il nome, è a Londra. A capo di tutto, il Partito, a cui si deve amore cieco, e il leader supremo, Il Grande Fratello, di cui nessuno conosce davvero l'esistenza. Tutto è regolamentato, la privacy non esiste, tutto è soggetto all'autorità del partito. Le stesse notizie possono cambiare da un momento all'altro, tutto può essere riscritto, non ci sono archivi in quanto il passato originale non esiste più. Le persone semplicemente scompaiono e di loro non rimane più niente, nemmeno il nome, tutto viene cancellato, in una sorta di damnatio memoriae contemporanea e totale.
Fondamento dell'educazione dei cittadini è il Bispensiero, "chi controlla il passato controlla il futuro: chi controlla il presente controlla il passato". Tutto può diventare verità e storia se chi comanda decide che una notizia è falsa, che un'alleato ora è un nemico. Revisionismo storico accurato e totale, nel momento stesso che accade. Le prove vengono bruciate, e non è ammesso alcun dubbio.
Orwell non ha inventato niente. Il modello è stato la Russia di Stalin e Lenin, riprendendo le loro idee e i loro modelli di potere. La storia narrata non è niente di diverso da quello che è già successo, succede e succederà nel mondo.
Non è un romanzo, è una profezia.
Uno di quei capolavori da leggere. Per capire meglio noi stessi e il mondo in cui viviamo. Come scrive meravigliosamente Eco, qui si parla di Energia Visionaria. Orwell non scrive più letteratura, un bel libro, scrive un grande libro. Un libro che va oltre. Un libro che non parla di scenari impossibili e immaginari. Parla del presente. Del nostro mondo. Manipolare la mente delle persone per il potere, indirizzarle dove si vuole, non è niente che non cerchi di fare qualunque politico. Fin dove potrà portare o ha già portato?

One of those modern classics of which we all know the existence more or less, and the most of whom probably know the Big Brother without knowing exactly what's its part in the book.
I was lead to reading it by having found a copy in a thrift shop, a copy dating back precisely to 1984 and above all, the factor that triggered my purchase, an introduction by Umberto Eco.
A dystopia, the imagined representation of a future with a highly undesirable and negative society. Winston Smith, the protagonist, is locked in one of these. The world is divided between three great superpowers, Oceania, Eurasia and EastAsia, in war with each other with several downturns of alliances.
Smith lives in Oceania, whose headquarters of ministries, in contrast to what one might think given the name, is in London. At the head of everything, the Party, to which you owe blind love, is the supreme leader, The Big Brother, of whom no one really knows the existence. Everything is regulated, privacy does not exist, everything is subject to the authority of the Party. The same news can change from one moment to another, everything can be rewritten, there are no archives because the original past does not exist anymore. People simply disappear and there is nothing left of them, not even the name, everything is deleted, in a kind of contemporary and total damnatio memoriae.
Foundation of the is the Doublethink, "who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past". Everything can become truth and history if the commander decides that a news is false, that an ally is now an enemy. Accurate and total historical revisionism, at the same time as it happens. Proofs are burnt, and no doubts is allowed.
Orwell has not invented anything. The model was Russia by Stalin and Lenin, resuming their ideas and their patterns of power. The story told is nothing other than what has already happened, happens and will happen in the world.
It's not a novel, it's a prophecy.
One of those masterpieces to read. To better understand ourselves and the world we live in. As wonderfully Eco writes, here we talk about Visionary Energy. Orwell didn't write literature anymore, a good book, he wrote a great book. A book that goes beyond. A book that does not speak of impossible and imaginary scenarios. Talk about this. Of our world. Handling people's minds for power, directing them wherever you want, is nothing other than any politician seeks to do. How long will it bring or have it already brought?
