Ho iniziato questo libro spinta da, se non sbaglio, un riferimento in un contesto di discussione sul femminismo. Che Edna, la protagonista, viveva un suo risveglio da donna intrappolata in un matrimonio di convenienza. Un risveglio anche materiale, dove se nella prima parte del romanzo la protagonista fa lunghi sonni, nella seconda il personaggio non riesce a dormire e passa lunghe notti insonni. Come nella prima parte, non sa nuotare e ha paura dell'acqua, nella seconda addirittura si spinge al largo.E' un personaggio che ricorda per certi aspetti Anna Karenina, e per altri Madame Bovary. E per certi aspetti, la trovo intensamente noiosa e fastidiosa come queste due.
E' un personaggio molto da romanzo: sposata, con figli, ad un uomo dedito al suo lavoro e molto attento alle convenienze; grazie a un uomo risveglia se stessa; grazie a un secondo uomo, meno serio, rinasce la sua sensualità; decide poi di mettersi a dipingere e di mollare la famiglia. Del primo uomo, è molto innamorata ma, da brava drama queen come le sue precedenti emule, si crea nella sua testa questa enorme storia enorme ma non si rende conto che anche lui è bravo a parole ma nei fatti...
Purtroppo mi sono data di regole quella di non spoilerare, mi piacerebbe potervi dare esempi della drama queenaggine ma finirei per raccontarvi tutto il libro.
Ho amato molto il racconto di una certa società, molto borghese, in cui si finisce preda di convenzioni. E sono sicura che per l'età in cui scrive la Chopin, Edna sia un personaggio trasgressivo. Ma reputo maggiormente "moderna" un altro personaggio, Mademoiselle Reisz. Meno affascinante di Madame Pontellier, sicuramente, ma più vera, più moderna e indipendente.
La scrittura è piacevolissima, il romanzo scorre via e i personaggi sono ben delineati.
Deve essere stato il periodo in cui si apprezzavano personaggi come Emma Bovary e Anna Karenina, perchè Edna Pontellier sarebbe l'ideale completamento del trio.

I started this book, driven by, if not mistaken, a reference in a context of discussion about feminism. That Edna, the protagonist, lived her awakening as woman trapped in a marriage of convenience. An also material awakening, because in the first part of the novel the protagonist makes long sleeps, in the second the character can not sleep and pass long sleepless nights. As in the first part, she can not swim and is afraid of the water, in the second even pushes off.
It is a character that recalls in some respects Anna Karenina, and for others Madame Bovary. And in some ways, I've found her intense and boring as these two.
She is a very novel character: married, with children, to a man dedicated to his work and very attentive to the conveniences; thanks to a man awakens herself; thanks to a second less serious man, her sensuality was reborn; then decides to become a painter and to give up the family. Of the first man, she is very in love with but, as a good drama queen like her previous emulates, she creates in her head this huge story but she does not realize that he is good with words but in fact...

I loved the story of a very bourgeois society, where people ended up bound with conventions. And I'm sure that for the age of Chopin, Edna is a transgressive character. But in my opinion more "modern" is another character, Mademoiselle Reisz. Less fascinating than Madame Pontellier, surely, but more real, more modern and independent.
The writing is very nice, the novel runs away and the characters are well-outlined.
They must have been the decades when people like Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina, because Edna Pontellier would be the ideal completion of the trio.
