Il romanzo ha come protagonista Hervé Joncour, un mercante di bachi da seta sempre in viaggio tra la Francia e il Giappone, sposato con Helene, ma con il cuore e la mente sempre nell'Impero del Sol Levante, a una donna misteriosa con la faccia da ragazzina e i tratti orientali, ma la cui voce lui non ha mai sentito.
E' romanzo strano, perchè rimane tutto molto misterioso e avventuroso, il Giappone e i personaggi che lo abitano sembrano usciti da un sogno. Ma come spesso accade, la realtà, per quanto più vicina, nasconde anch'essa i suoi segreti e molto spesso, quello che cercavamo era lì accanto a noi.
Si legge velocemente, ma la poesia del libro e della sua vicenda e della sua protagonista (quella vera) è bella e profonda.

I think this is one of Baricco's most famous books, but I hadn't read it yet. I am happy to have finally filled this gap.
The novel's protagonist is Hervé Joncour, a merchant of silkworm always traveling between France and Japan, married to Helene, but with her heart and mind always in the Empire of the Rising Sun, to a mysterious woman with a face as a girl and the oriental traits, but whose voice he has never heard.
It is a strange novel, because everything remains very mysterious and adventurous, Japan and the characters who inhabit it seem to have come out of a dream. But as often happens, reality, however close, also hides its secrets and very often, what we were looking for was there next to us.
You can read it quickly, but the poetry of the book and its story and its protagonist (the real one) is beautiful and profound.
