Il libro parte raccontando l'amicizia tra Laura, la voce narrante, e Alina. Laura è una childfree convinta e ha fatto un intervento di chiusura delle tube per mettere al sicuro la sua scelta. Anche Alina all'inizio della loro amicizia è convintamente childfree ma quando incontra Aurelio e vanno a vivere insieme, decidono di avere un figlio. Dopo molti tentativi, Alina finalmente rimane incinta ma purtroppo la bambina ha una malformazione cerebrale e non si sa se sopravvivrà al parto. Intanto, Laura conosce e inizia a frequentare Nicolas, figlio della sua vicina di casa Doris, una madre e un figlio con un vissuto familiare di sicuro non facile... a completare i protagonisti, forse meno presente rispetto alle altre due, la mamma di Laura, una donna inizialmente molto convenzionale ma che si scoprirà più aperta alle diverse scelte delle donne più avanti con gli anni.
Mi sono ritrovata moltissimo in Laura, alla nostra età è normale essere circondata da amiche con figli e avere a che fare con i bambini delle altre è esperienza di tutte. Però ho apprezzato meno che, anche in questo libro, viene comunque rimarcato che anche se non ne hai e non ne vuoi, ti ritroverai comunque a prenderti cura di un bambino, come se fosse un destino a cui non si scampa. Un conto è averci a che fare, un conto è prendersene cura attivamente, quasi una vice-mamma.
In questo romanzo è affrontata la maternità non da spot pubblicitario, quella non facile, quella in cui l'amore non basta, quella fatta di violenze, di battaglie, di malattia. Lo fa con una narrazione molto semplice, molto scorrevole, di quel genere che il libro lo inizi e finisci in una sera tanto è facile leggerlo, come fosse un diario.
Ho dato tre stelle un po' per la motivazione di cui sopra, e un po' perché ho trovato il finale davvero brutto e quasi buttato lì tanto per, giusto perché bisognava finirlo ma è stato scelto di finirlo nel modo peggiore possibile, un finale che non c'entra niente con il resto del libro, si poteva benissimo evitare.
Chissà, probabilmente l'avrei portato avanti ancora per qualche pagina, così mi sembra che manchi qualcosa.

The book starts with the beginning of the friendship between Laura, the narrator, and Alina. Laura is a childfree and has had a tubal closure operation to secure her choice. Even Alina at the beginning of their friendship is a childfree but when she meets Aurelio and they go to live together, they decide to have a child. After many attempts, Alina finally gets pregnant but unfortunately the baby has a brain malformation and she will unlikely survive the birth. Meanwhile, Laura meets Nicolas, son of her neighbour Doris, a mother and a son with a family background that is certainly not easy... to complete the protagonists, perhaps less present than the other two, the mother of Laura, a woman who was initially very conventional but who will find herself more open to the different choices of women later in life.
I see myself very much in Laura, at our age it is normal to be surrounded by friends with children and having to deal with each other's children is everyone's experience. But I appreciated less that, even in this book, it is still remarked that even if you don't have any and you don't want any, you will still find yourself taking care of a child, as if it were a destiny that cannot be escaped. It's pretty different to deal with them and have to actively take care of them, almost a vice-mother.
In this novel, motherhood is not addressed like the ones in an advertisement, it is the difficult one, the one in which love is not enough, the one made up of violence, battles, illness. The author does it with a very simple, very fluent narration, of the kind that one starts and finishes reading the book in one evening, it is so easy to read it, as if it were a diary.
I gave three stars a little bit for the above motivation, and a little bit because I found the ending really bad, just because it had to be finished but it was chosen to finish it in the worst possible way, an ending that it has nothing to do with the rest of the book, it could very well have been avoided.
Who knows, I probably would have carried it on for a few more pages, so it seems to me that something is missing.
