Racconto breve e un po' fantastico, sulla lotta interna tra il voler comportarsi degnamente e i propri istinti più primitivi. La lotta, quella contro l'alcolismo, che Roth conosceva bene e di cui purtroppo é stato vittima. In queste poche pagine ha riversato un tema che, purtroppo, conosceva fin troppo bene.

A short novel, not many pages, but a lot happens. Andreas is a homeless, he lives under the bridge in Paris, he is a former prisoner and he is an alcoholic. One day, he meets a very distinguished man who, without know who he is, give him an amount of money. The deal is Andreas will return it the following Sunday in a church. From here, in the Andreas' life will happen unexpected encounters and new opportunities. It's shame that every Sunday he doesn't manage to have the amount of money he needs to repayment. He tries, but a certain weakness to temptations and a certain wastefulness stop him. As long as the day has come when another encounter gives him the final push...
Short story and a bit surreal, about the intimate fight between our desire to behave and our basic istincts. A fight, the one against acoholism, that Roth knows very well, because he was a victim of it. In this few pages he poured a subject he, unfortunately, knew too well.
