Non aspettatevi incredibili avventure o mirabolanti imprese. William Stoner é un uomo normale. Noioso, forse, per qualcun altro, ma un uomo normale. La sua vita sembra già organizzata. Figlio di contadini, andrà all'Università a studiare Agricoltura e tornerà per aiutare i genitori nei campi. Invece, complice una lezione su Shakespeare, gli studi agricoli scompariranno e la sua attenzione e i suoi studi saranno di Letteratura Inglese. Diventa professore, conosce Edith, si sposa, ha una figlia. Nessuna complicazione, nessun dilemma esistenziale, sembra nessuno sforzo. Una vita normale. Eppure William é un eroe. É vivo. Insegna quello che ama, vive circondato dai suoi libri. E quando la vita, come un torrente in piena lo travolge, lui si lascia andare, vive quello che ha. E quando gli viene portato via, il suo io non si ribella, ma non lo accetta. Vuole vivere nel suo modo, e la vita gli mette i bastoni tra le ruote, e lui vive nel modo più consono a se stesso e che reputa migliore. Fa delle scelte. E no, non é un ribelle. É uno di noi, uno dei buoni. E finire il libro é stato come salutare una persona che si stima, una bella persona.

I've started this book after all the gorgeous reviews I've read everywhere. I wanted to know why this book can arouse so much interest, for a book published a few decades ago. Not quite a new edition. Now I've understood it. Definitely. And my reviews will join the other enthusiastic reviews. Don't expect for extraordinary adventures. William Stoner is a normal man. Boring, maybe, for someone, but a normal man. His life looks already organized. Son of farmers, he will study Agriculture at the University and will come back after his graduation to help his parents in the fields. Instead, because a lecture about Shakespeare, the agricultural studies will disappear and his mind and studies will turn on English Literature. He becomes a Professor, he meets Edith, he gets married, he becomes father of a daughter. No complications, no angsts, no struggles. A very normal life. But, William is a hero. He's living. He teaches what he loves, he lives surrounded by books. And when life overwhelms him as in flood, he lets himself go, he lives what he has. And when it is abducted, he doesn't revolt, but doesn't accept it either. He wants to live his way, and when life has thrown a spanner in his works, he lives in his best way. He chooses. And no, he is not a rebel. It's one of us, one of the good ones. And finishing this book was like say goodbye to a good person, a person I esteem.
