Grandissimo.

After that powerful book that was Blindness, a book that I loved very much, I couldn't leave that atmosphere, and I've read this one. If one wants, the book could also be read alone, as it explains very well the background and the first part remains a story that could very well be to itself.
Four years after the events narrated in the first volume, elections are held in the country and, in the city where there was the blindness epidemic, 82% of voters vote blank ballots. Twice. How could it have been possible? The highest leaders of the state and the police investigate, with a great use of lawful and illicit forces, without being able to extract the proverbial spider from the hole. Until the most miserable and ungrateful of the small group of seven, the protagonists of the first book, with a letter reveal what happened four years earlier and accuses the doctor's wife, the one who did not lose her sight and who he thinks is the instigator of this rebellion.
This is in short the plot of the book. What is extraordinary in this second novel is the story of power plays, of how politics does and undoes without considering what is right but only what is advantageous. None of them is interested in truth but only in power. A bastion of hope, as in the first was the doctor's wife, in this second will be a tough and pure police commissioner who will not be fooled by an artfully constructed game to find a scapegoat for an incomprehensible affair.
If it were not for a tiny reference to Portuguese citizens, the story told remains universal, without names of people or cities, each defined by its own office.
But the talent of Saramago is universal. What a power, what a clarity, what a so personal style. Great.
