Avendoli letti tutti e amando molto il genere, la mia curiosità è andata su questo, unico scritto da un'italiana.
Siamo in un Giappone colpito da un'epidemia di cancro nero, una malattia della pelle che squama l'epidermide. Ironia della sorte, le uniche immuni dalla malattia sono le sirene, dal corpo a squame, poco dissimili da quelle che siamo abituati a immaginare. In questo mondo, le sirene sono tenute in speciali allevamenti, in cui vengono fatte accoppiare per produrre altre sirene, e da cui escono solo per diventare cibo per ricchi yazuka, la mafia giapponese, o per finire nei bordelli. Samuel è il sorvegliante di uno di questi impianti, colpito dalla morte della fidanzata, che riversa il suo bisogno di contatto su queste sirene, oltrepassando il limite.
E' un romanzo breve ma molto denso, l'ho divorato in una sera. Ci sono parecchie scene crude e alcune anche moralmente discutibili, ma utili per creare l'atmosfera di un mondo così diverso. E' affascinante e insieme spaventoso il mondo di queste donne-pesce, in cui la loro magia è unita alla violenza e alla ferocia, la loro e quella del mondo che le circonda.
Per quanto piccolo, per quanto non abbia avuto una cassa di risonanza come gli altri, è un libro assolutamente degno di comparire con gli altri nella lista.

I found this novel recommended in a list of readings for the post-The Testaments by Margaret Atwood. A post of dystopias like Electric Girls by Naomi Alderman, the same The Handmaid's Tale, and others.
Having read them all and loving the genre, my curiosity went on this, the only one written by an Italian.
We are in a Japan hit by an epidemic of black cancer, a skin disease that scales the epidermis. Ironically, the only ones immune to the disease are the mermaids, with their scaly bodies, not too unlike by those we are used to imagine. In this world, mermaids are kept in special farms, where they are mated to produce other mermaids, and from which they come out only to become food for rich yazuka, the Japanese mafia, or to end up in brothels. Samuel is the overseer of one of these facilities, struck by the death of his girlfriend, and he spills his need for contact on these sirens, crossing the line.
It is a short but very dense novel, I devoured it in one evening. There are several raw scenes and some even morally questionable, but useful for creating the atmosphere of a so different world. The world of these women-fishes is fascinating and frightening, in which their magic is combined with violence and ferocity, theirs and that of the world around them.
However small, though it may not have had a platform like the others, it is an absolutely worthy book to appear with others on the list.
