Il libro parte raccontando l'amicizia tra Laura, la voce narrante, e Alina. Laura è una childfree convinta e ha fatto un intervento di chiusura delle tube per mettere al sicuro la sua scelta. Anche Alina all'inizio della loro amicizia è convintamente childfree ma quando incontra Aurelio e vanno a vivere insieme, decidono di avere un figlio. Dopo molti tentativi, Alina finalmente rimane incinta ma purtroppo la bambina ha una malformazione cerebrale e non si sa se sopravvivrà al parto. Intanto, Laura conosce e inizia a frequentare Nicolas, figlio della sua vicina di casa Doris, una madre e un figlio con un vissuto familiare di sicuro non facile... a completare i protagonisti, forse meno presente rispetto alle altre due, la mamma di Laura, una donna inizialmente molto convenzionale ma che si scoprirà più aperta alle diverse scelte delle donne più avanti con gli anni.
Mi sono ritrovata moltissimo in Laura, alla nostra età è normale essere circondata da amiche con figli e avere a che fare con i bambini delle altre è esperienza di tutte. Però ho apprezzato meno che, anche in questo libro, viene comunque rimarcato che anche se non ne hai e non ne vuoi, ti ritroverai comunque a prenderti cura di un bambino, come se fosse un destino a cui non si scampa. Un conto è averci a che fare, un conto è prendersene cura attivamente, quasi una vice-mamma.
In questo romanzo è affrontata la maternità non da spot pubblicitario, quella non facile, quella in cui l'amore non basta, quella fatta di violenze, di battaglie, di malattia. Lo fa con una narrazione molto semplice, molto scorrevole, di quel genere che il libro lo inizi e finisci in una sera tanto è facile leggerlo, come fosse un diario.
Ho dato tre stelle un po' per la motivazione di cui sopra, e un po' perché ho trovato il finale davvero brutto e quasi buttato lì tanto per, giusto perché bisognava finirlo ma è stato scelto di finirlo nel modo peggiore possibile, un finale che non c'entra niente con il resto del libro, si poteva benissimo evitare.
Chissà, probabilmente l'avrei portato avanti ancora per qualche pagina, così mi sembra che manchi qualcosa.

The book starts with the beginning of the friendship between Laura, the narrator, and Alina. Laura is a childfree and has had a tubal closure operation to secure her choice. Even Alina at the beginning of their friendship is a childfree but when she meets Aurelio and they go to live together, they decide to have a child. After many attempts, Alina finally gets pregnant but unfortunately the baby has a brain malformation and she will unlikely survive the birth. Meanwhile, Laura meets Nicolas, son of her neighbour Doris, a mother and a son with a family background that is certainly not easy... to complete the protagonists, perhaps less present than the other two, the mother of Laura, a woman who was initially very conventional but who will find herself more open to the different choices of women later in life.
I see myself very much in Laura, at our age it is normal to be surrounded by friends with children and having to deal with each other's children is everyone's experience. But I appreciated less that, even in this book, it is still remarked that even if you don't have any and you don't want any, you will still find yourself taking care of a child, as if it were a destiny that cannot be escaped. It's pretty different to deal with them and have to actively take care of them, almost a vice-mother.
In this novel, motherhood is not addressed like the ones in an advertisement, it is the difficult one, the one in which love is not enough, the one made up of violence, battles, illness. The author does it with a very simple, very fluent narration, of the kind that one starts and finishes reading the book in one evening, it is so easy to read it, as if it were a diary.
I gave three stars a little bit for the above motivation, and a little bit because I found the ending really bad, just because it had to be finished but it was chosen to finish it in the worst possible way, an ending that it has nothing to do with the rest of the book, it could very well have been avoided.
Who knows, I probably would have carried it on for a few more pages, so it seems to me that something is missing.

Sui processi alle streghe di Salem si sono scritti moltissimi libri e tante volte sono stati fonte di ispirazione per serie tv e film.
Dei reali protagonisti, del pastore Parris, delle ragazzine che hanno iniziato tutto con le loro false accuse e delle donne che finirono processate per quello, si sa tutto, della loro vita prima e di quella dopo. Di una di loro però si sono perse le tracce, pur sapendo che non è stata impiccata, nessuno sa cosa sia successo a partire dal periodo passato in carcere dopo il processo. Questa donna è Tituba, la schiava nera del pastore Parris, la prima ad essere stata accusata di stregoneria.
Direi che è abbastanza facile capire perché di lei si siano perse le tracce... in un mondo in cui una donna "diversa" viene etichettata come strega, una donna come Tituba, nera, povera, narratrice di storie di un mondo considerato selvaggio ed esperta delle proprietà delle piante, era una donna a cui nessuno teneva.
Maryse Condè, in questo bellissimo romanzo, ci racconta la storia di Tituba, dalla nascita nelle Barbados al trasferimento in America, per poi fare un salto in più e raccontarci la vita di Tituba dopo il processo, fino alla sua morte.
Ho amato moltissimo l'atmosfera di questo libro nelle parti ambientate nella terra natale di Tituba, piene di sensualità e di dialogo con la natura e con gli spiriti amici, al contrario del freddo e della violenza e della ignoranza delle parti dedicate a Salem. Una protagonista meravigliosa, forte e potente ma allo stesso tempo infinitamente fragile in un mondo in cui essere donna e nera ti pone nel gradino più basso.
Un romanzo bellissimo.

About the real protagonists, the Priest Samuel Parris, the girls who started it all with their false accusations and the women who ended up being under trial for that, we know everything, their life before and after. Of one of them, however, has been lost track, even knowing that she was not hanged, no one knows what has happened since the time spent in prison after the trial. This woman is Tituba, the black slave of Samuel Parris, the first to be accused of witchcraft.
I would say that it is quite easy to understand why no one knows about her life... in a world where a "different" woman is labeled a witch, a woman like Tituba, black, poor, storyteller of a world considered wild and expert in the properties of plants, she was a woman who no one cared about.
Maryse Condè, in this beautiful novel, tells us the story of Tituba, from her birth in Barbados to her move to America, to then telling us about Tituba's life after the trial, until her death.
I loved the atmosphere of this book very much in the parts set in Tituba's native land, full of sensuality and dialogue with nature and friendly spirits, as opposed to the cold and violence and ignorance of the parts dedicated to Salem. A wonderful protagonist, strong and powerful but at the same time infinitely fragile in a world where being a woman and black puts you on the lowest level.
A beautiful novel.

Dalla regina degli Iceni, Boudicca, vissuta tra il 33 e il 60 DC, passando per Isabella di Castiglia e Caterina Sforza, fino alle più contemporanee Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir e Indira Ghandi, la storica Antonia Fraser fa un excursus di tutte le "regine guerriere", donne che nei secoli hanno preso il comando e hanno combattuto, con qualunque arma potessero.
Per ognuna di loro viene raccontata la storia, come hanno ottenuto il potere, le loro gesta e soprattutto in che modo venissero viste dai contemporanei. Ognuna di loro ricade in una casellina degli stereotipi, quindi o è donna di rara purezza fino all'essere vergine, oppure è donna di facilissimi costumi e di sfrenatissima licenziosità. Oppure, il costante riferimento a una infanzia da maschiaccio, in preparazione dell'avvenire; del cuore da uomo di cui queste donne devono essere dotate per scendere in battaglia.
E' stato un viaggio molto interessante ed ho davvero apprezzato molto scoprire figure femminili che non conoscevo, come Tamara di Georgia, la Rani di Jhansi e la regina Jinga.
C'è un continuo riferirsi, per ogni regina, a Boudicca, in cosa erano simili e in cosa dissimili. E in questo incrociare le figure, con i tantissimi riferimenti portati, mi ha fatto un po' perdere l'ordine in diversi punti. Forse avrei apprezzato che ognuna avesse il suo spazio o che ci fosse più stacco tra un punto e l'altro.
Davvero molto bello e interessante, la storia delle donne è sempre affascinante!

Each of them falls into a box of stereotypes, so or she is a woman of rare purity to the point of being a virgin, or she is a woman of no morals and unbridled licentiousness. Or, the constant reference to a tomboy childhood, in preparation for the future; of the man's heart these women must be gifted with to go into battle.
It was a very interesting journey and I really enjoyed discovering female figures I did not know, such as Tamara of Georgia, the Rani of Jhansi and Queen Jinga.
There is a constant reference, for each queen, to Boudica, in what they were similar and in what they were dissimilar. And in this crossing the figures, with the many references brought, I was lost in several points. Perhaps I would have appreciated that each had the her own space or that there was more detachment between one point and another.
Very beautiful and interesting, women's history is always fascinating!

Dopo quasi un mese, sono finalmente arrivata a completare la lettura di questo romanzo. Ne avevo tanto sentito parlare bene e mi affascinava l'idea di una storia di maghi inglesi a inizio Ottocento. 
In un'era in cui la magia è solo teorica e noiosa e viene studiata su dei libri, e la magia pratica è roba da vagabondi e gente stramba, arrivano prima Gilbert Norrell e poi Jonathan Strange, con i loro poteri, a riportare la magia nella vita degli inglesi!
Per quello che riguarda le mie personali letture, quello che c'è di diverso rispetto ai soliti romanzi su maghi e magia è che i due protagonisti sono due rispettabilissimi gentleman, dalla solida reputazione e un buon reddito, con grandi case in campagna e servitori e ovviamente, biblioteche ben fornite di libri di magia. I due, come farebbero tutti i maghi borghesi, si mettono al servizio dei ministri del governo inglese, per loro combattono Napoleone e addirittura Strange viene mandato a seguire Lord Wellington contro l'esercito francese. Ovviamente ogni mago ha bisogno di una profezia e di un nemico... vedremo in quale modo i due, pur diversissimi nei modi e nelle idee, affronteranno la sfida!
Lo sfondo di questo bel quadretto di borghesia, fortunatamente, è però l'unica cosa "banale" nel libro... per il resto, abbiamo grandi feste e balli notturni, gentiluomini dai capelli lanuginosi, re pazzi e soprattutto, donne e persone di colore che non sono semplici figure di contorno!
E' un libro davvero scritto bene, interessante, con bei personaggi, bella trama... ma è anche molto lungo e in alcune parti moooooolto lento! E' che è davvero bello però in alcuni momenti ho avuto bisogno di tutta la mia determinazione per andare avanti! Tra l'altro, ci sono anche tantissime note a fine capitolo con altre storie legate al mondo di Strange e Norrell... un approfondimento dei temi e dei personaggi nominati tra i protagonisti, diciamo così, interessanti ma potete tranquillamente saltarli, non lo dirò a nessuno!
Un finale complesso e degno di questo romanzo, devo dire che mi ha soddisfatta, non il tipico finale.
Insomma, sono contenta di averlo letto ma adesso, come capita dopo tutti i mattoni, mi dedicherò a qualcosa di più corto!

After nearly a month, I have finally finished reading this novel. I had heard so much about it and I was fascinated by the idea of ​​a story of English magicians in the early nineteenth century.
In an era where magic is only theoretical and boring and is studied in books, and practical magic is the stuff of wanderers and weirdos, first Gilbert Norrell and then Jonathan Strange, with their powers, come to bring back the magic in the life of the British people!
As for my personal readings, what is different from the usual novels about wizards and magic is that the two protagonists are two very respectable gentlemen, with a solid reputation and a good income, with large houses in the countryside and servants and of course, well-stocked libraries of books about magic. The two, as all bourgeois magicians would do, put themselves at the service of the ministers of the English government, they fight Napoleon for them and even Strange is sent to follow Lord Wellington against the French army. Obviously every magician needs a prophecy and an enemy... we will see how the two, although very different in ways and ideas, will face the challenge!
The background of this nice little picture of the bourgeoisie, fortunately, is the only "trivial" thing in the book... otherwise, we have big parties and night dances, downy-haired gentlemen, crazy kings and above all, women and people of color that are not mere outline figures!
It's a really well written, interesting book, with nice characters, nice plot... but it's also very long and in some parts soooooo slow! It's really nice but in some moments I needed all my determination to go on! Among other things, there are also many notes at the end of every chapter with other stories related to the world of Strange and Norrell... a deepening of the themes and characters who the protagonists talked about, let's say, interesting but you can safely skip them, I will not say to anybody!
A complex and worthy ending to this novel, I must say that I was satisfied, not the typical ending.
In short, I'm happy to have read it but now, as happens after any big book, I will dedicate myself to something shorter!

Chi segue queste mie recensioni, sa quanto io seguo con un occhio particolarmente attento la famiglia reale inglese e quanto al primo posto delle mie preferenze ci sia sempre lei, colei che della monarchia è l'incarnazione e il simbolo: la Regina Elisabetta II.
Non è certo questo il primo libro che leggo sulla sua figura, ma è sempre un piacere, quasi come un comfort food, leggere di personaggi e di storie che già conosco. In questo caso invece, Paola Calvetti è riuscita a scrivere un libro in cui ci sono moltissime storie che non conoscevo, i rapporti con gli uomini e le donne che l'hanno fotografata e le storie di quelle immagini, più o meno famose. E così, ecco che scopriamo i retroscena della foto dell'incoronazione e dei vari giubilei e anniversari di nozze che hanno costellato la sua lunghissima vita, come le foto che le sono state scattate durante impegni ufficiali o anche foto che le sono state scattate senza che lei lo sapesse o che fosse in posa, che sono anche quelle dove traspare la vera Regina al di là delle formalità e del suo ruolo istituzionale.
Temevo un po' di leggere questo libro in versione ebook, in quanto il mio ereader è in bianco e nero. Per fortuna, o per meglio dire purtroppo visto che è l'unico difetto di questo libro, c'è solo una foto per capitolo e mancano molte di quelle che sono citate, immagino per una questione di diritti d'autore.
Quindi mi è andato benissimo da una parte leggere l'ebook e dall'altro avere accanto sempre lo smartphone da dove cercare le foto di cui si parla.
Un libro molto interessante che ripercorre la storia della donna più famosa del mondo in una veste nuova, molto gradito a chi come me già conosce abbastanza bene la sua storia ma vuole sempre scoprire qualcosa di più.

Those who follow these reviews of mine know how much I'm interested in the English royal family and how in the first place of my preferences there is always her, the woman who is the embodiment and symbol of the monarchy: Queen Elizabeth II.
This is certainly not the first book I've read about her, but it is always a pleasure, almost like a comfort food, to read about characters and stories that I already know. In this case, however, Paola Calvetti managed to write a book in which there are many stories that I didn't know, the men and women who photographed her and the stories behind those images, more or less famous. And so, here we discover the background of the photo of the coronation and of the various jubilees and wedding anniversaries in her very long life, such as the photos that were taken of her during official engagements or even photos that were taken without her knowing it or posing, which are also those where the true Queen shines through beyond the formalities and her institutional role.
I was a bit afraid to read this book in ebook version, as my ereader is in black and white. Fortunately, or rather unfortunately since it is the only flaw in this book, there is only one photo per chapter and many of those that are cited are missing, I guess for a matter of copyright.
So it went very well for me on the one hand to read the ebook and on the other hand to always have the smartphone next to where to look for the photos we are talking about.
A very interesting book that traces the history of the most famous woman in the world in a new way, very welcome to those like me who already know her story well enough but always want to discover something more.

Ovviamente, come tutti coloro che erano già nati in quelli anni, sapevo chi fosse Andre Agassi e che fosse uno dei migliori tennisti al mondo, ma fino a oggi, da poco sportiva, non avevo chiaro in testa perché. E soprattutto, non conoscevo la sua storia se non molto in generale.
Proprio perché non sono una gran sportiva e ancora meno una esperta di tennis, non sapevo se questo libro mi sarebbe davvero interessata e, anche se chiunque l'avesse letto mi aveva detto che era molto interessante, è rimasto per qualche anno sullo scaffale in attesa del suo momento.
Finita la lettura, devo dire che mi aggiungo alla lista di coloro che lo hanno letto e lo consigliano fortemente! Ottimo libro, molto interessante.
La storia inizia con una sorta in introduzione dove Agassi che partecipa agli Us Open del 2006, il suo ultimo torneo in carriera prima del ritiro, per poi riprendere la storia dall'inizio, con la storia dei suoi genitori e soprattutto il modo in cui il padre, Mike, ha cresciuto Andre con la volontà di farne un campione di tennis, fregandosene completamente anche di quello che vuole lo stesso Andre. Così fin da bambino viene costretto a interminabili sessioni di allenamento nel campo dietro casa, a colpire palle sparate sempre più velocemente dal "drago", una macchina costruita dal padre.
Andre odia il tennis. Lo ripete spesso durante il libro e se tutti un po' minimizzano questa cosa, chi gli dà la risposta migliore è sicuramente la donna della sua vita, un'altra che è una delle più grandi campionesse di tennis della storia, Steffi Graf.
Di lui scopriamo le ribellioni adolescenziali, fatte per avere un pezzo di se stesso in una vita decisa totalmente dal padre e dai suoi allenatori; i punti alti e bassi della sua carriera, che quando sono alti sono altissimi e quando sono bassi sono bassissimi; i suoi amori, tra cui Brooke Shields e ovviamente Steffi Graf, di cui era innamorato dalla prima volta che l'ha vista; la sua rivalità sportiva con Pete Sampras; il suo staff che lo allena, lo segue e lo capisce meglio di chiunque altro.
Quello che ho amato di questo libro è che Agassi è di un'estrema sincerità. Credo che in queste pagine abbia davvero messo tutto se stesso, tutte le sue battaglie, ogni volta che perdeva o non era abbastanza concentrato, capire quale direzione prendere. Conosciamo i suoi pensieri prima, durante e dopo il match, i momenti in cui crede di non farcela, i momenti in cui non riesce a credere di avercela fatta.
Da queste pagine non esce un tennista macchina da guerra, uno che non sgarra mai, diciamo una specie di Cristiano Ronaldo del tennis. Non esce nemmeno un tennista perfetto, uno che non sbaglia un colpo, uno a cui non si potrebbe trovare una sbavatura come per esempio Roger Federer. Agassi è un tennista umano, certo, uno dei migliori tennisti della storia di questo sport ma comunque uno che riesci a capire e a sentire vicino, uno che perde match importanti ma che si sa rialzare in piedi con rabbia e con le proprie persone vicine.
Davvero una bellissima autobiografia, una delle migliori che abbia mai letto.
(Ok, sì, la scrittura vera e propria è di un premio Pulitzer, ma la vita è la sua.)

Obviously, like all those who had already been born in those years, I knew who Andre Agassi was and that he was one of the best tennis players in the world, but until today I didn't have a clear idea why. And above all, I didn't know his story except something more general.
Precisely because I am not a great sportswoman and even less a tennis expert, I didn't know if this book would really interest me and, even if anyone who had read it had told me it was very interesting, it remained on the shelf for a few years waiting of his moment.
After reading it, I must say that I add myself to the list of those who have read it and strongly recommend it! Great book, very interesting.
The story begins with a sort of introduction where Agassi, who participates in the Us Open in 2006, his last career tournament before retiring, resumes the story from the beginning, with the story of his parents and above all the way in which the father, Mike, raised Andre with the will to make him a tennis champion, completely unconcerned about what Andre himself wants. So since he was a child he is forced to endless training sessions in the field behind the house, to hit balls fired faster and faster by the "dragon", a machine built by his father.
Andre hates tennis. He often repeats it during the book and if everyone minimizes this thing, the one who gives him the best answer is certainly the woman of his life, another who is one of the greatest tennis champions in history, Steffi Graf.
We discover his adolescent rebellions, made to have a piece of himself in a life totally decided by his father and his coaches; the highs and lows of his career, which when they are high are very high and when they are low they are very low; his loves, including Brooke Shields and obviously Steffi Graf, with whom he was in love from the first time he saw her; his sporting rivalry with Pete Sampras; his staff who train him, follow him and understand him better than anyone else.
What I loved about this book is that Agassi is extremely honest. I think in these pages he really put all of himself, all his battles of him, every time he lost or wasn't focused enough, figuring out which direction to take. We know his thoughts about the match before, during and after, the moments when he believes he can't make it, the moments when he can't believe he's made it.
From these pages doesn't come out a war machine tennis player, one who never fails, let's say a kind of Cristiano Ronaldo of tennis. Not even a perfect tennis player comes out, one who doesn't miss a shot, one for whom one couldn't find a flaw like Roger Federer for example. Agassi is a human tennis player, of course, one of the best tennis players in the history of this sport but one that you can understand and feel close to, one who loses important matches but who knows how to stand up with anger and with his close people.
Truly a beautiful autobiography, one of the best I have ever read.
(Okay, yes, the actual writing is by a Pulitzer Prize winner, but the life is Agassi's.)

Come si può vedere da una prima occhiata, questo è stato un mese molto povero dal punto di vista della quantità libraria. Ma non della qualità.
Ho avuto delle settimane in cui non riuscivo a leggere niente, iniziavo un libro e lo abbandonavo dopo 20 pagine, trovato tutto noioso, poco interessante. Poi invece mi capitava di leggere un libro di quasi 300 pagine in una serata, come mi è accaduto con Misery. Ho amato moltissimo la autobiografia di Andre Agassi, per quanto io sia molto lontana dall'essere una sportiva, ma la sua sincerità mi ha davvero colpita. Dall'altro lato, due libri sulle regine, uno sulla Regina per antonomasia del mondo contemporaneo, Queen Elizabeth II, l'altro su una serie di regine altrettanto importanti che sono scese in battaglia, con qualunque arma avessero a disposizione.
Sono indecisa tra Open e Misery per la palma del più bello, dovrò pensarci!
Per quanto riguarda i libri acquistati, uno in cartaceo e uno in ebook, sono stati due testi che volevo leggere da un po' e per entrambi ho approfittato di uno sconto quindi era anche un po' dovuta la cosa :)

Settimane in cui non riuscivo a leggere più di venti pagine senza annoiarmi, un mese, quello di novembre, di letture iniziate e abbandonate.
Poi ho guardato la libreria, i libri ancora da leggere, Stephen King non avrebbe mai potuto annoiarmi!
Iniziato dopo pranzo, in un freddo e piovoso venerdì pomeriggio (freddo sicuramente, piovoso non so perché per ore non ho guardato fuori dalla finestra), finito poco dopo l'ora di cena con pause per sgranchirmi le gambe e prepararmi da mangiare.
Bellissimo, a ogni livello.
Il racconto degli orrori che Annie provoca a Paul, un salire di orrore e crudeltà; lo studio della mente di Paul, come reagisce all'incubo e come riesce a scrivere il romanzo migliore della sua carriera; in ultimo, ma non importante, una vera lezione di letteratura dentro il romanzo, come si scrive un libro, i trucchi a cui ricorrono gli scrittori, la febbre di scrivere in qualunque situazione, la nascita e la crescita di una storia.
Oserei dire, geniale. Perché solo un genio, un uomo dotato di un incredibile talento come King avrebbe potuto scrivere un romanzo del genere.

Weeks in which I couldn't read more than twenty pages without getting bored, a month, this November, of started and abandoned books.
Then I looked at my shelves, the books still to be read, Stephen King will save me!
I started after lunch, on a cold and rainy Friday afternoon (cold for sure, rainy I don't know because I didn't look out the window for hours), finished shortly after dinner with breaks to stretch my legs and cooking something to eat.
Beautiful, at every level.
The tale of the horrors that Annie causes to Paul, a rise of horror and cruelty; the study of Paul's mind, how he reacts to the nightmare and how he manages to write the best novel of his career; last but not least, a real literary lesson within the novel, how to write a book, the tricks that writers use, the fever to write in any situation, the birth and growth of a story.
I dare say, brilliant. Because only a genius, a man with an incredible talent like King could have written such a novel.

In questi giorni di fine ottobre, con l'avvicinarsi di Halloween, torna sempre più prepotente la voglia di leggere qualcosa a tema. Da sempre appassionata di streghe, di queste donne indipendenti, forti, decise, potenti, non potevo non avere questo libro della Abeditore, sono corsa in libreria appena è uscito!
Parto prima di tutto dal fattore estetico, come al solito la Abeditore non delude, copertina meravigliosa, illustrazioni all'interno bellissime! L'effetto "antico" della grafica sempre affascinante!
Ho apprezzato particolarmente la prefazione femminista di Giulia Ciarapica, molto interessante e con qualche spunto di lettura in più per approfondire la questione. E sempre per rimanere nell'ambito, c'è una ulteriore attenzione che ho apprezzato. Nella maggior parte dei casi, quando si tratta di raccolte di racconti di genere horror/fantastico di autori del passato, e ne ho diverse, in genere la selezione dei racconti riporta quasi esclusivamente autori maschi. In questo caso, invece, c'è una buona presenza anche di autrici donne che niente di meno in qualità hanno rispetto ai loro colleghi maschi. E mi sembra anche giusto considerando che si parla di streghe!
Ultimo ma non per importanza, il contenuto è diviso tra narrativa e saggistica, quindi tra i racconti veri e propri, gli estratti dal libro "Demonologia e stregoneria" di Sir Walter Scott, documenti reali del periodo della caccia alle streghe e una appendice con i metodi di tortura... per capire fino in fondo quanto queste donne erano già condannate ancora prima di arrivarci, per colpa dell'ignoranza e del fanatismo di chi le accusava. I racconti sono divisi per temi, volendo si può anche leggere a salti.
In totale, complimenti alla Abeditore per aver pubblicato questo gioiello, personalmente lo ritengo, ad oggi, il libro più bello e interessante di una casa editrice che ci ha già abituati a libri belli e interessanti!

In these days at the end of October, with the approach of Halloween, the desire to read something about this subject returns more and more overwhelming. Always passionate about witches, these independent, strong, decisive, powerful women, I had to have this book by the Abeditore in my shelves,so I ran to the bookstore as soon as it came out!
I start from the aesthetic factor, as usual the Abeditore doesn't disappoint, wonderful cover, beautiful illustrations inside! The "antique" effect of the graphics is always fascinating!
I particularly appreciated the feminist preface by Giulia Ciarapica, very interesting and with some more reading ideas to deepen the question. And always to stay within the subject matter, there is an additional care that I appreciated. In most cases, when it comes to collections of horror / fantasy genre stories by authors of the past, and I have several, generally the selection of the stories reports almost exclusively male authors. In this case, however, there is also a good presence of female authors who have nothing less in quality than their male colleagues. And it also seems fair considering that we are talking about witches!
Last but not least, the content is divided between fiction and non-fiction, so with the fictional stories there are the extracts from the book "Demonology and witchcraft" by Sir Walter Scott, real documents from the period of the witch hunt and an appendix with the methods of torture... to fully understand how much these women were already condemned even before they got there, because of the ignorance and fanaticism of those who accused them. The stories are divided by themes, one can read it in the order one prefers.
So, congratulations to Abeditore for having published this jewel, personally I believe this is the most beautiful and interesting book of a publishing house that has already accustomed me to beautiful and interesting books!

Non sapevo nemmeno quanto mi era mancato leggere qualcosa di Piperno prima di questo libro! Il suo modo di scrivere elegante e ricercato e i suoi personaggi, che non sono mai dei modelli di vita ma hanno difetti molto terreni e umani, il protagonista non è certo un modello di virtù e simpatia, sono una miscela perfetta.
Una voce narrante senza nome, ormai in età adulta se non avanzata, ripercorre la storia della sua famiglia, da quella con i suoi genitori a quella, più allargata, in cui passa l'adolescenza dopo un terribile fatto di sangue. Da una famiglia disfunzionale perché litigiosa e con pochi soldi e tanti debiti, a una famiglia disfunzionale perché ipocrita e con tantissimi soldi. Segreti, bugie, vecchi rancori che continuano ad assediare, mancanze, ma anche una religione con un suo peso non indifferente.
Pur essendo un libro di circa 400 pagine, l'ho divorato perché dovevo sapere come sarebbe andato a finire e soprattutto catturata dalla bellezza e l'eleganza della prosa di Piperno.

I didn't even know how much I had missed reading something by Piperno before this book! His elegant and refined way of writing and his characters, who are never models of life but have very real and human flaws, the main character is certainly not a model of virtue and sympathy, they are a perfect blend.
An unnamed narrator, now in adulthood, traces the history of his family, from that with his parents to the one, more extended, in which he spends the adolescence after a terrible event. From a dysfunctional family because they are quarrelsome and with little money and a lot of debt, to a dysfunctional family because they are hypocritical and with a lot of money. Secrets, lies, old grudges that continue to lie, absences, but also a religion with its own considerable weight.
Despite being a book of about 400 pages, I devoured it because I had to know how it would end and above all captured by the beauty and elegance of Piperno's prose.

Lo spleen sarebbe la tristezza meditativa, la malinconia, ed in questa accezione la parola è usata dal poeta decadentista Charles Baudelaire.
Questa raccolta di piccole poesie in prosa, di racconti brevissimi, racconta l'anima di Parigi, il suo lato più vero, che racconti amori tragici o felici, come vivere la vita, borghesia e quartieri bassi, l'eleganza e la volgarità, le donne (e ricordiamo che Baudelaire ovviamente parla di una Parigi tardo ottocentesca, con una morale e una divisione tra i generi molto diversa rispetto all'attuale) e gli uomini di Parigi.
Alcuni pezzi sembrano facili e leggeri, ma come con la poesia è bene stare attenti alle singole parole, per non perderne il senso e anche la bellezza.
Il mio preferito è il XXXIII, "Ubriacatevi", un inno all'essere sempre appassionati di qualcosa, al farsi travolgere, al vivere la vita fino in fondo, "di vino, di poesia, di virtù, a vostro piacimento. Ma ubriacatevi!" Decisamente il mio preferito e probabilmente anche l'unico poema in prosa che mi abbia conquistata.
Insomma, davvero molto bello, da leggere a piccoli pezzi, gustandone la bellezza e cercando di comprendere appieno il mondo in cui sono stati scritti e la persona da cui sono stati scritti.

The spleen is the meditative sadness, melancholy, and in this meaning the word is used by the decadent poet Charles Baudelaire.
This collection of small prose poems, of very short stories, tells the soul of Paris, its truest side, whether it tells tragic or happy loves, how to live life, bourgeoisie and lower neighborhoods, elegance and vulgarity, women (and we remember that Baudelaire obviously speaks of a late nineteenth-century Paris, with a very different morality and division between genders than the current one) and the men of Paris.
Some pieces seem easy and light, but as with poetry it is good to pay attention to the single words, so as not to lose their meaning and also their beauty.
My favorite is XXXIII, "Be drunk", a hymn to always being passionate about something, to be overwhelmed, to live life to the full, "of wine, of poetry, of virtue, as you wish. Be drunk!" Definitely my favourite and probably the only prose poem that has won me over.
In short, very nice, to read in small pieces, enjoying the beauty and trying to fully understand the world in which they were written and the person by whom they were written.

L'ultima arrivata nella mia libreria della bibliografia di Simone de Beauvoir è questa raccolta di suoi scritti inediti. Si va dalle interviste, a pezzi su femminismo, l'essere donna, le relazioni tra gli uomini e le donne, la letteratura.
Come al solito, ogni parola uscita dalla sua penna si dimostra intensa, intelligente, talmente moderna da apparire a me, lettrice nel 2021, più avanti ancora di almeno cent'anni non solo al periodo in cui l'ha scritto ma al periodo in cui io lo sto leggendo. Un faro di luce costante che segna la strada. Che dono prezioso deve essere stato per chiunque abbia avuto la possibilità di conoscerla e sentirla parlare dal vivo.
Per me, leggere e approfondire il suo pensiero, indispensabile.

The latest addition to my personal Simone de Beauvoir's bibliography is this collection of her unpublished writings. It comes from interviews, to pieces on feminism, being a woman, relationships between men and women, literature.
As usual, every word that comes out of her pen proves to be intense, intelligent, so modern that it appears to me, a reader in 2021, still at least a hundred years ahead not only of the period in which she wrote it but of the period in which I am reading it. A guiding light that marks the way. What a precious gift it must have been for anyone who had the chance to meet her and hear her speak in person.
For me, reading and deepening her thoughts is essential.

Un romanzo basato su una storia vera, una caccia alle streghe in un paesino della Norvegia settentrionale nel 1617. La vigilia di Natale, una burrasca uccide tutti gli uomini adulti del paesino di Vardø, usciti in barca per pescare.
Le donne del paese, dopo il primo momento di smarrimento, si rendono conto di doversi rimboccare le maniche e imparare a essere indipendenti, a fare tutti quei lavori che prima erano compito degli uomini, come anche pescare.
Siamo però in tempi di caccia alle streghe e un paesino di sole donne che fanno i lavori dei maschi, dove si mischiano insieme norvegesi e lapponi e dove ancora si trovano tracce di antiche religioni, viene notato dal governatore della regione, fanatico religioso, e viene inviato a sistemare le cose il sovrintendente Cornet che vi si insedia con la giovane moglie Ursa.
Il tranquillo villaggio di donne subirà le conseguenze dell'ignoranza e del fanatismo, dove chi è diverso e indipendente subisce la malevolenza, l'invidia e le accuse di chi fino al giorno prima ospitava nella propria casa.
Un romanzo davvero bellissimo, molto forti le descrizioni del processo alle streghe e delle torture che quelle povere donne innocenti dovevano subire per colpa di credenze totalmente inventate e costruite solo per fare del male e sottomettere.
L'unico difetto che riesco a trovare è la storia d'amore che, per quanto molto romantica, risulta un po' forzata.
Romanzo consigliato per chi è interessat* al tema della caccia alle streghe e le vere storie a essa collegate.

However, we are in times of witch hunts and a village of only women who do the jobs of males, where Norwegians and Lapps mix together and where traces of ancient religions are still found, it's noticed by the governor of the region, a religious fanatic, and the Superintendent Cornet, who takes up residence there with his young wife Ursa, has been sent to sort things out.
The quiet village of women will suffer the consequences of ignorance and fanaticism, where those who are different and independent suffer the malevolence, the envy and the accusations of those who until the day before were hosted in their homes.
A truly beautiful novel, very strong descriptions of the witch trials and torture that those poor innocent women had to undergo because of totally invented beliefs, built only to harm and subdue.
The only flaw I can find is the love story which, although very romantic, is a bit forced.
Novel recommended for those interested in the theme of the witch hunt and the real stories connected to it.

Ho attraversato diverse fasi in questo libro. L'ho iniziato perchè ho adorato Palahniuk in Beautiful You ma mi aveva lasciata un po' così in Fight Club. Mi ispirava la trama ma fino al 75% di questo libro non mi ha entusiasmata. Poi il finale, boom, genio. Nel frattempo, diversi colpi di scena hanno ribaltato qualunque cosa voi poteste pensare all'inizio, quindi preparatevi a rimanere stupiti.
Se cercate un autore con cui scendere fino in fondo alle bassezze umane, qualcuno che vi racconti fino a che punto si possa scendere, Palahniuk fa per voi.
Shannon McFarland è una modella, una di quelle talmente belle che entrano in una stanza e tutti gli occhi sono per loro. Un giorno, qualcuno le spara mentre è in macchina e le porta via metà faccia... chi è un mostro? Cosa nasconde chi della bellezza ha fatto la propria vita? Fino a che punto può arrivare chi cerca se stesso, chi cerca di fare pace con se stesso, chi deve accettare il proprio corpo, chi quel corpo lo porta appresso ma che in quel corpo non si riconosce?
Promesse tante discese agli inferi e tanti colpi di scena.
Palahniuk lo si odia o lo si ama... o entrambe le cose insieme. Di sicuro, impossibile che lasci indifferenti.

I went through several stages in this novel. I started it because I loved Palahniuk in Beautiful You but it left me a bit disappointed in Fight Club. The plot inspired me but up to 75%, this book didn't thrill me. Then the finale, boom, genius. Meanwhile, several twists have overturned whatever you might have thought at first, so be prepared to be amazed.
If you are looking for an author with whom you can descend to the depths of human being, someone who will tell you how far you can go, Palahniuk is for you.
Shannon McFarland is a model, one of those so beautiful that she walks into a room and all eyes are on her. One day, someone shoots her while she's in the car and takes half her face off... who's a monster? What are hiding those who have made the beauty their own life? How far can go one who seeks oneself, who seeks to make peace with oneself, who must accept its own body, who carries that body but doesn't recognize oneself in that body?
Many descents into hell and many twists.
You either hate or love Palahniuk... or both at the same time. Certainly impossible to leave indifferent.

Ottobre ricco di belle letture, devo dire che questo mese sono molto soddisfatta. C'è stata una parte di una collezione di libri sul mito arturiano, un bel po' di stregoneria, un romanzo di uno dei miei scrittori preferiti e una raccolta di scritti di colei che per me è un modello di vita.
Sarà davvero difficile scegliere quale sia la lettura migliore del mese, ma sono abbastanza convinta che la palma andrà a Madame de Bouvier... per quanto Grimorio sia una delle più belle raccolte di storie di streghe in circolazione e Piperno abbia scritto un romanzo davvero bellissimo, sia lessicalmente sia come trama.
Devo sicuramente impegnarmi di più per fare in modo di leggere molti più libri di quanti ne abbia comprati... o meglio, sarebbe il caso evitare in toto librerie e soprattutto mercatini :D

Terzo libro della collezione sul ciclo arturiano della RBA, questa volta concentrato su Re Artù, su come Excalibur l'abbia prescelto come re d'Inghilterra, sulle prime rivolte del suo regno e come nacque. La storia è basata sull'opera di Thomas Malory, La morte di Artù.
Artù, figlio di Uther Pendragon e Lady Igraine, dopo la sua nascita viene cresciuto da Sir Hector e sua moglie, e il loro figlio Kai.
Una volta adolescente, re Uther muore e il nuovo re sarà colui che riuscirà ad estrarre la spada Excalibur dalla roccia. Artù ci riesce ma non tutti i nobili di Bretagna accetteranno di sottomettersi a uno scudiero sconosciuto fino al giorno prima...
Devo dire che sto apprezzando conoscere gli antefatti delle storie più famose, Artù in genere viene conosciuto già re e già a capo dei Cavalieri della Tavola Rotonda, mentre è interessante vedere come si è evoluta la storia, o meglio, come si è evoluta in una delle fonti.
Devo dire che la storia è molto interessata e raccontata bene, questa collezione della RBA è molto ben fatta, sia per quanto riguarda l'aspetto narrativo sia per la grafica.
La storia di Artù e del ciclo arturiano non mi lascerà sicuramente, sono così tanti i libri che ne parlano, tra cui metterò in lista questo "La morte di Artù" di Thomas Malory.

Third book of the RBA's collection about the Arthurian cycle, this time focused on King Arthur, on how Excalibur chose him as king of Britain, on the first revolts of his reign and how it was born. The story is based on Thomas Malory's The Death of Arthur.
Arthur, son of Uther Pendragon and Lady Igraine, after his birth is raised by Sir Hector and his wife, with their son Kai.
Once a teenager, King Uther dies and the new king will be the one who manages to extract the sword Excalibur from the stone. Arthur succeeds but not all the nobles of Britain will agree to submit to an unknown boy who was a squire until the day before...
I must say that I am appreciating knowing the background of the most famous stories, Arthur is generally known when he's already a king and already head of the Knights of the Round Table, while it is interesting to see how the story has evolved, or rather, how it has evolved into one of the sources.
I must say that the story is very interesting and well told, this collection of the RBA is very well done, both for the narrative aspect and for the graphics.
The story of Arthur and the Arthurian cycle will certainly not leave me, there are so many books that talk about it, among which I had listed that "The death of Arthur" by Thomas Malory.

Secondo volume della collezione della RBA dedicata al ciclo arturiano.
Se come me siete degli appassionati della rivisitazione arturiana fatta da Marion Zimmer Bradley con il Ciclo di Avalon, qui non ritroverete quel mondo. Questo Codex Morgana è più vicino a La morte di Artù, di Thomas Malory, in cui (spoiler)


Morgana, sempre figlia di Gorlois e Lady Igraine, poi moglie di Uther Pendragon, viene educata in un convento di suore, dove comunque riesce a trovare degli spazi per la magia grazie a figure amiche e viene poi data in sposa a Urien di Gore.

Quello che non cambia è la presenza dentro le vene di Morgana del sangue magico, che la rende una delle streghe più potenti dell'intera mitologia arturiana e una figura incredibilmente affascinante.
Come ho già detto non conoscevo questa versione della sua storia, personalmente continuo a preferire la versione in cui lei viene educata ad Avalon. Ma approfondire la propria conoscenza e vedere diversi aspetti, è sempre comunque arricchente.

If like me you are a fan of the Arthurian reinterpretation made by Marion Zimmer Bradley with the Avalon Cycle, you will not find that world here. This Codex Morgana is closer to The Death of Arthur, by Thomas Malory, in which (spoiler) 


Morgan, daughter of Gorlois and Lady Igraine, then wife of Uther Pendragon, is educated in a convent of nuns, where she still manages to find spaces for the magic thanks to friendly figures and is then given in marriage to Urien di Gore.

What does not change is the presence inside Morgan's veins of magical blood, which makes her one of the most powerful witches in the entire Arthurian mythology and an incredibly fascinating figure.
As I said I didn't know this version of the story about her, personally I still prefer the version where she is educated in Avalon. But deepening one's knowledge and seeing different aspects is always enriching anyway.

Prima uscita di una collezione di libri riguardanti le storie del ciclo arturiano, tra il mago Merlino, Morgana, Re Artù, la spada Excalibur e tanto altro.
Essendo un'appassionata di questo genere di storie mi ha incuriosito. Dal punto di vista grafico, molto bella la copertina e anche all'interno è molto ben fatto, con cornici a tema nelle pagine.
Per quanto riguarda la storia, questo volume racconta la nascita e la giovinezza del Mago Merlino, la sua formazione, come è diventato quello che è, e la situazione in Britannia con Vortigern, signore della guerra gallese, che prende il potere. Per quanto conoscessi i personaggi, questa parte della storia non la conoscevo e sono contenta di aver potuto colmare questa lacuna.
Lo stile è quello tipico di queste storie, deve ridare l'effetto della leggenda, e ci riesce molto bene, si legge con gran piacere.
Insomma, un buon acquisto, per chi ama queste storie decisamente consigliato.

Being a fan of this kind of stories it intrigued me. From a graphic point of view, the cover is very beautiful and also inside is very well done, with themed frames on the pages.
As for the story, this volume chronicles the birth and youth of Merlin, his education, how he became what he is, and the situation in Britain with Welsh warlord Vortigern taking power. As much as I knew the characters, I didn't know this part of the story and I'm glad I was able to fill this gap.
The style is typical of these stories, it must restore the effect of the legend, and it succeeds very well, I've read it with great pleasure.
In short, a good purchase, definitely recommended for those who love these stories.

Con questa biografia di Elisabetta I, preceduta da quella della madre Anna Bolena e della sorellastra Maria, chiudo il mio personale ciclo di storie sulle donne della famiglia Tudor raccontate da Carolly Erickson.
Su Elisabetta I e l'età elisabettiana ci sarebbero tantissimo da dire, in questo libro c'è tanto.
C'è tanto sulle guerre di religione, sui suoi amori soprattutto con Dudley e i pretendenti alla sua mano; tanto su quella che era la sua personalità, il suo carattere; tanto sulle guerre di religione e sulla decisione con cui venivano mandati a morte i dissidenti cattolici; tanto sulla guerra con la Spagna. Molto meno c'è sulla contesa con Maria Stuarda e soprattutto pochissimo sull'età elisabettiana, sulla cultura e le arti fiorentissime nel suo periodo, basti dire che Shakespeare viene nominato solo una volta e in un pezzettino di tre righe. Quello forse è stato uno dei pochi difetti di questo libro che mi ha davvero infastidito.
Come sempre, Carolly Erickson riesce a fare un resoconto molto interessante della vita e del regno di una grandissima regina, la degna erede di Enrico VIII se solo avesse preso in considerazione anche le figlie, invece di incaponirsi ad avere un erede maschio. Chissà come sarebbe stata diversa la storia se solo l'avesse saputo, che la figlia di quella Anna Bolena che ha mandato sul patibolo perché, primariamente, non riusciva a dargli un erede maschio, sarebbe stata una delle più grandi regine d'Inghilterra!

With this biography of Elizabeth I, preceded by that of her mother Anne Boleyn and her half-sister Mary, I close my personal cycle of stories about the women of the Tudor family told by Carolly Erickson.
There is a lot to say about Elizabeth I and the Elizabethan age, in this book there is a lot.
There is so much about her loves, especially with Dudley and the suitors to her hand; so much about what her personality was, her character; much about the wars of religion and the firmness by which Catholic dissidents were sent to death; much about the war with Spain. There is much less on the dispute with Mary Stuart and above all very little on the Elizabethan age, on the culture and the very flourishing arts in her period, suffice it to say that Shakespeare is mentioned only once and in a small piece of three lines. That was perhaps one of the few flaws in this book that really bothered me.
As always, Carolly Erickson manages to give a very interesting account of the life and reign of a very great queen, the worthy heir of Henry VIII if only he had also taken her daughters into consideration, instead of blaming his wives for not giving him a male heir. Who knows how the story would have been different if only he had known, that the daughter of that Anne Boleyn that he sent to the gallows because, primarily, she could not give him a male heir, would have been one of the greatest queens of England!

Prima di questo libro, ho letto la biografia di Anna Bolena scritta dalla stessa autrice e mi aveva molto delusa per quella che mi sembrava una descrizione un po' troppo sbrigativa del personaggio, delusione accresciuta dalla palese disapprovazione dell'autrice per il personaggio.
Questa biografia di Maria I invece ha incontrato molto di più il mio gusto, una biografia completa dalla nascita fino alla morte, molto dettagliata. Dà un po' l'impressione che a parte essere una fervente cattolica, Maria la Sanguinaria non sia poi quel personaggio così interessante da meritare un soprannome così significativo. Sicuramente una testarda, che portava avanti il suo ideale fino alla fine, ma l'interesse alla sua figura deriva dalle vicende dei suoi genitori e dall'essere stata in mezzo tra il regno del padre e quello straordinario della sorella Elisabetta I.
Sicuramente molto interessante è lo spaccato della società inglese in questo periodo che viene disegnato dal libro. Un affresco completo soprattutto per quanto riguarda la religione e i rapporti cattolici-protestanti, probabilmente l'ultimo periodo in cui il cattolicesimo è stato religione di stato in Inghilterra.
Siccome non c'è due senza tre, adesso è il turno della biografia di Elisabetta I, sempre della stessa autrice!
E poi dalla famiglia Tudor, non certo la famiglia del Mulino Bianco, sarà tutto :)

Before this book, I've read the biography of Anna Bolena written by the author herself and I was very disappointed with what seemed a bit too hasty description of the character, a disappointment heightened by the author's blatant disapproval of the character.
On the other hand, I liked much more this biography of Maria I, a complete biography from birth to death, very detailed. It gives the impression that apart from being a fervent Catholic, Bloody Maria isn't that so interesting character to deserve such a significant nickname. Surely a stubborn one, that she carried on her ideal until the end, but the interest in her figure derives from the events of her parents and from having been in the middle between the kingdom of her father and that extraordinary of his sister Elizabeth I.
Certainly very interesting is the cross-section of English society in this period that is drawn by the book. A complete picture especially regarding Catholic-Protestant religion and relations, probably the last period in which Catholicism was the state religion in England.
Since there is no two without three, now it is the turn of the biography of Elizabeth I, always by the same author!

Il secondo volume delle Morgane raccontate da Michela Murgia e Chiara Tagliaferri, stavolta con un tema preciso: i soldi. Perchè, come dice esattamente Virginia Woolf nella prima frase della prefazione, "Una ragazza dovrebbe avere una stanza tutta per sé e una rendita di 500 sterline l'anno", la Woolf diceva per scrivere ma si intende per fare qualunque cosa quella ragazza voglia fare della sua vita. Indipendenza economica come prima cosa da ricercare nella vita, prima di un matrimonio, questo dovrebbe essere il punto principale da insegnare a tutte le bambine del mondo, perchè ai bambini lo si insegna già.
Quindi ecco raggruppate le storie di donne che quella indipendenza se la sono cercata e tenuta stretta, con la loro fantasia, con le loro idee innovative, con la loro fede, con il loro talento, con il loro essere se stesse. Donne che non hanno dovuto essere legate al patrimonio del maschio accanto a loro, non "le mogli di" anche in periodi storici in cui era l'unica cosa che le donne potevano essere.
Tutte donne incredibili, ma la mia preferita in assoluto ovviamente la conterranea Francesca Sanna Sulis, di cui colpevolmente non conoscevo la storia ma che adesso approfondirò sicuramente e di cui andrò a visitare il museo a lei intitolato, omaggio all'imprenditoria femminile. Sarebbe bello che la sua storia venisse conosciuta maggiormente, come quella di tutte le altre, come esempio e modello per la mia generazione, non è mai tardi, per le donne di oggi e per le future.

Because, as Virginia Woolf says exactly in the first sentence of the preface, "A woman must have money and a room of her own" Woolf said "to write fiction" but meant to do whatever that girl wants to do of her life. Economic independence as the first thing to look for in life, before a marriage, this should be the main point to teach all the girls in the world, because we already taught it to the boys.
So here are the stories of women who have sought that independence and held it tight, with their imagination, with their innovative ideas, with their faith, with their talent, with their being themselves. Women who didn't have to be tied to the heritage of the male next to them, not "the wives of" even in historical periods when it was the only thing women could be.
All incredible women, but my absolute favorite obviously the Sardinian Francesca Sanna Sulis, whose history I guilty didn't know, but which I will definitely deepen now and I will go to visit the museum named after her, a tribute to female entrepreneurship. It would be nice if her story was better known, like that of all the others, as an example and model for my generation, it is never late, for women today and for the future.

Io so che quando ho tra le mani un libro di storie di Le Fanu, leggerò storie di altissima qualità, di grande suspence e bellezza.
Il dottor Hesselius, medico-esoterista, racconta qui di tre casi di cui è venuto a conoscenza attraverso le carte. Il primo è un racconto in prima persona di una vicenda accaduta quando il dottor Hesselius era uno studente di medicina, nel caso del secondo racconto, invece, sono riportate le due diverse versioni conosciute della stessa vicenda e per quanto riguarda il terzo racconto, il dottore riporta gli incartamenti che raccontano la storia.
Il protagonista dei diversi racconti è un uomo di una certa posizione sociale, rispettato, che affronta casi di apparizioni misteriose e inspiegabili che derivano dal suo passato e che tornano per vendicare vecchi torti subiti.
Tre racconti davvero molto intriganti e interessanti, sono abbastanza corti quindi è fattibile anche leggerli in un giorno, ma davvero la qualità è come al solito altissima.
Incredibilmente, di Le Fanu mi manca il suo romanzo Carmilla, che ho già negli scaffali, colmerò presto anche questa lacuna.

I know that when I have a book of Le Fanu stories in my hands, I will read stories of the highest quality, of great suspense and beauty.
Doctor Hesselius, a medical-esotericist, tells here of three cases that he learned about through the papers. The first is a first-person account of a story that occurred when Dr. Hesselius was a medical student; in the case of the second story, however, the two different known versions of the same story are reported; as regards the third story, the doctor reports the papers that tell the story.
The main character of the stories is a man of a certain social position, respected, who faces cases of mysterious and inexplicable apparitions that derive from his past and who return to avenge old wrongs.
Three really intriguing and interesting stories, they are quite short so it is also possible to read them in one day, but the quality is really high as usual.
Incredibly, I still have to read his novel Carmilla, which I already have on my shelves, I will soon fill this gap too.

Leggere Virginia Woolf che scrive di letteratura è sempre una gioia infinita. Questo libro è una raccolta di 14 recensioni che la scrittrice inglese ha scritto per il Times Literary Supplement tra il 1916 (il pezzo su Charlotte Bronte) e il 1935 (il pezzo che chiude il libro, Il capezzale del capitano).
Ci sono pezzi specifici dedicati a diversi autori, come Conrad, George Eliot e Henry James, e altri più "generali". Devo dire, questi ultimi sono i miei preferiti, soprattutto Ore in biblioteca e Sul rileggere i romanzi. Ma ogni saggio e recensione di questo volume è prezioso, va letto lentamente per cogliere in pieno il pensiero dell'autrice. Sapessi io scrivere delle recensioni così interessanti, da cui traspare tutta la sua curiosità intellettuale e anche il suo umorismo.
L'ho letto in quasi un mese ma perchè, come ho detto, ero interessata a gustarmelo, a leggerlo attentamente. Ed è stata una lettura che mi ha arricchita, non solo sulla conoscenza dei singoli autori, ma su come si scrive una recensione perfetta.

Reading Virginia Woolf who writes about literature is always an infinite joy. This book is a collection of 14 reviews that the English writer wrote for the Times Literary Supplement between 1916 (the piece about Charlotte Bronte) and 1935 (the piece that closes the book, The Captain's Bedside).
There are specific pieces dedicated to single authors, such as Conrad, George Eliot and Henry James, and others more "general". I have to say, the latter are my favorites, especially Hours in the Library and On Rereading Novels. But every essay and review of this volume is precious, it must be read slowly to fully grasp the author's thought. If only I knew how to write such interesting reviews, which show all her intellectual curiosity and also her humour.
I read it in almost a month but because, as I said, I was interested in enjoying it, in reading it carefully. And it was a reading that enriched me, not only on the knowledge of the individual authors, but on how to write a perfect review.

Rispetto ad altri mesi, devo dire che questo mese è stato molto ridotto rispetto ai libri letti ma... non certo rispetto ai libri comprati!! Maledetti mercatini :D
Tra tutti i libri letti, spicca I racconti del Necronomicon, davvero bellissimi, come molto belli i tre racconti della raccolta di Le Fanu.
Le donne invece mi hanno raccontato splendidamente altre donne, come Murgia e Tagliaferri con le loro donne e il rapporto con il denaro e la biografia di Maria la Sanguinaria. E poi, la mia amatissima Virginia e il suo raccontare i libri gli altri.
Non so bene cosa mi si prospetta per il mese di ottobre, nel mio comodino ci sono ben quattro libri in lettura... cercherò di evitare i mercatini ma non prometto niente!!

Una collezione di nove racconti in cui Lovecraft ha inserito un riferimento al Necronomicon, il "Libro Maledetto" inventato da lui stesso ma che tanto ha solleticato la fantasia dei lettori da lì in poi. Nove racconti tra le storie più inquietanti e intelligenti che potrete leggere, quando vi si dice che l'unico in grado di avvicinarsi a Edgar Allan Poe è proprio l'autore di Providence, credeteci! Racconti a metà tra il nostro mondo e dimensioni parallele nella comprensione delle quali solo pochi uomini sono riusciti ad avvicinarsi, abissi impossibili da spiegare con la nostra limitata capacità comunicativa e che proprio per questo, nelle parti non spiegate e non comprese, celano l'orrore. A parte tre, gli altri racconti fanno parte del Ciclo dei Miti di Cthulhu, la parte più significativa della produzione di Lovecraft.
Ho dato quattro stelle e non il massimo perché a volte mi è sembrato che Lovecraft badasse più alle descrizioni, soprattutto nella prima storia che è quella che meno mi ha colpita. Mentre le altre sono assolutamente all'altezza della sua fama, soprattutto Colui che sussurrava nelle tenebre e Il cane, i due racconti che maggiormente mi hanno colpita.
Di sicuro la mia conoscenza dell'opera di Lovecraft non si ferma qui ma andrà avanti!

While the others absolutely live up to his fame, especially The One Who Whispered in the Darkness and The Dog, the two stories that most struck me.
For sure my knowledge of Lovecraft's work doesn't stop here but it will go on!

Sono una fan delle biografie della signora Erickson da quando lessi la sua biografia di Caterina la Grande, uno dei libri più interessanti che abbia mai letto, mi ha riportato indietro nel tempo nella Russia Imperiale, ricreando tutto un mondo.
Essendo Anna Bolena una dei protagonisti della storia inglese che maggiormente mi affascina, questa sua biografia non poteva non finire nella mia libreria. Devo dire, però, che ne sono uscita un po' delusa.
Parto col dire che ho comunque letto questo libro praticamente in 24h, scorrevole e piacevole da leggere, molto interessante nella ricostruzione storica e della psicologica dei personaggi ma anche molto romanzato!
C'è maggiore risalto al periodo pre-matrimoniale, con le sfide che Enrico VIII e Anna Bolena hanno dovuto superare per sposarsi, mentre la parte dalla nascita di Elisabetta I in poi fino alla morte è davvero molto striminzita. Inoltre, mi dà l'impressione che l'autrice abbia scritto la biografia di un personaggio che lei detesta, diverse volte viene sottolineato quanto Anna Bolena fosse odiosa, cattiva, quanto fosse vanagloriosa e arrivista, quanto facesse tutto con il solo scopo di diventare la moglie del re... insomma, sono sicura che non fosse un'innocente ragazzina, ma mi sembra chiaro da che parte sta la simpatia dell'autrice.
Insomma, rispetto alla biografia di Caterina la Grande c'è un abisso!
Di sicuro non sarà l'ultima biografia di questa autrice che leggerò, ho già pronta la biblioteca dell'altra figlia di Enrico VIII, Maria la Sanguinaria, ma spero che sia migliore e il punto di vista sia più oggettivo.

I've been a fan of Mrs. Erickson's biographies since reading her biography of Catherine the Great, one of the most interesting books I've ever read, it takes one back in time to Imperial Russia, recreating a whole world.
As Anne Boleyn is one of the main characters of English history that fascinates me, this biography of her had to end up in my library. I must say, however, that I came out a little disappointed.
I start by saying that I've finished this book in 24h, pleasant to read, very interesting in the reconstruction of the history and the psychology of the characters but also very fictional!
There is more prominence in the pre-marriage period, with the challenges that Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn had to go through to get married, while the part from the birth of Elizabeth I onwards until her death is very skimpy. Moreover, it gives me the impression that the author has written the biography of a character that she detests, several times it is emphasized how hateful Anne Boleyn was, how bad she was, how boastful and careerist she was, how much she did everything with the sole purpose of becoming the wife of the king... well, I'm sure she wasn't an innocent girl, but it seems clear to me where the author's sympathy lies.
In short, compared to the biography of Catherine the Great, there is an abyss!
It will certainly not be the last biography by this author that I will read, the next one will be the biography of Henry VIII's other daughter, Bloody Mary: The Life of Maria Tudor, but I hope it is better, more detailed and the point of view is more objective.
