Quando ancora non avevo letto nemmeno un rigo di questo libro, devo ammettere che il titolo mi incuteva un po' timore. Mi immaginavo questa storia triste, qualcosa di anche un po' deprimente. Invece, é finita che l'ho letto in due giorni.
James é figlio di genitori divorziati e vive a New York con la madre, gallerista d'arte, e con la sorella Gillian. Sta per partire per la Brown University ma non é sicuro di volerci andare davvero. La gente non gli piace, é spaventato dalla sua sessualità, sta meglio da solo. Ma é quel momento della vita in cui provare cose nuove spaventa sempre un po' e, come dice la saggia nonna Nanette, "un giorno questo dolore ti sarà utile", se le cose ci vanno sempre bene non impariamo mai niente.
Ho adorato questo libro, l'ho trovato intelligente e significativo senza essere pesante o voler sembrare saggio a tutti i costi. James é un ragazzo ma ha pensieri da adulto, amerebbe stare da solo in una casa in qualche villaggio sperduto dell'Indiana a leggere Trollope, ma la vita, la sua vita, gli fa rendere conto molto presto che la vita non é stare da solo ma relazionarsi con gli altri, con i loro sentimenti e anche con i loro difetti.
Bellissimo libro, adesso sono molto curiosa di leggere anche gli altri lavori di Peter Cameron.

Before to start reading this book, I must admit the title alarmed me a bit. I was imagining this sad story, something a little bit depressing. Well, at the end I've read it in two days.
James is the son of divorced parents and lives in New York with her mother, art gallery owner, and his sister Gillian. He is going to start university at Brown but he's not sure if it is really what he wants. He doesn't like people in general, he's scared by his sexuality, he stays better alone. But he is in that moment in life when trying new things scares a little bit and, as the wise granda Nanette says, "Someday this pain will be useful to you", if things are always going well we will never learn anything.
I loved this book, in my opinion it is smart and inspirational without being heavy or trying to look wise at all costs. James is a young man but he has adults thoughts, he would love to stay alone in a house in some isolated little town in Indiana reading Trollope, but life, his life, makes him realizing that life isn't staying alone but being related with other people, with their feelings and with their weaknesses too.
