Immagino che chiunque conosca la storia di Antonio e Cleopatra, mi sembrerebbe ridondante stare qui a sottolineare ancora concetti che dovrebbero già essere nella testa di ognuno. Dico solo che in questo caso, la storia parte con la coppia innamorata che inizia ad affrontare l'avanzare dei primi problemi, e si conclude con la sconfitta della flotta egiziana per mano di Cesare Ottaviano e la morte di Antonio, prima, e di Cleopatra poi.
E' un altro dei capolavori indiscussi di William Shakespeare. Puoi sentire la tensione che sale man mano che la vicenda va avanti e sale la contrapposizione tra Roma e l'Egitto. Le figure degli amanti protagonisti, Cleopatra regina di Egitto e Antonio a metà, tra la Roma a cui deve obbedienza e la sua nuova casa,l'Egitto. Ma il destino è contro di loro. Antonio è romano e come tale deve servire la sua patria e non la regina straniera. Davanti a Roma ogni ragione cede, e la morte degli amanti ne è la prova.
Antonio si uccide per la vergogna di non essere riuscito a proteggere l'Egitto (e Cleopatra), Cleopatra si fa pungere dall'aspide per l'orgoglio che le impedisce di accettare di essere parte del trionfo di Cesare Ottaviano a Roma. Amanti in vita, uniti nella morte.

Another day and another shakesperian reading for me and another sleepless night to read this masterpiece.
I think everyone know the story of Antony and Cleopatra, it would be superfluous to highlight concepts already in the head of everyone. I only say that, in this case, the story begins with the couple struggling with the first difficulties in their love story, and ends with the defeat of the Egyptian fleet at the hand of Octavius and the death of Antony, before, and of Cleopatra, then.
This is another Shakespeare's masterpiece. You can feel the tension rising gradually as the story goes on and as the contrast between Rome and Egypt increases. The lovers, Cleopatra Queen of Egypt and Antony, his heart in the middle between the obedience he owe to Rome and his new hometown, the Egypt. The fate is against them. As Roman, Antony must serve his city and not the foreign queen. In front of Rome, there is no reason, and the lovers death is the proof.
Antony kills himself for the shame he feels to not being able to protect Egypt (and Cleopatra). Cleopatra kills herself by means of an asp bite, because the pride doesn't let her accept to be part of the Octavius triumph in Rome. Lovers in life, together in death.
