Il tema di base di questa raccolta é il rapporto tra uomo e donna in tutte le sue sfaccettature. Ci sono amanti e desideri nascosti, ci sono mogli e mariti alle prese con la malattia e la morte, ci sono vecchi amici che si rincontrano e vecchie storie di famiglia. Il tutto sotto la sapiente penna della signora Munro che riesce a rendere interessante anche quella che, agli occhi di chiunque altro, sarebbe stata una storia banale e non meritevole di essere letta.
Credo sia proprio questa la forza della signora Munro, riuscire a rendere così bene la vita vera, riuscire a trovare il punto di forza di una storia apparentemente banale e renderla interessante e quasi poetica. I suoi personaggi sono tratteggiati in modo magnifico, riesce a restituirci ogni traccia di quello che pensano, conosciamo ogni angolo del loro carattere, ogni sfumatura, le loro forze e le loro debolezze. É come se la Signora Munro accendesse una luce che ci fa vedere con più chiarezza le relazioni tra le persone. Mai facili, mai prevedibili ma con cui ci si raffronta come siamo capaci, come sappiamo, come sentiamo.
E questo premio Nobel non poteva andare a una scrittrice migliore.

If a writer wins the Nobel Prize in Literature, there is a reason, isn't it? Well, in this case, Mrs Munro totally deserves the highly desirable award. She is very good, her books, her writing leaves her mark.
The main subject of this short story collection is the all aspect relationships between men and women. There are lovers and hidden lusts, husbands and wives struggling with diseases and death, there are old friends and ols family stories. Everything from the skillful hands of Mrs Munro, she makes interesting what, to the eyes of everyone else, looks like an ordinary and worthless story. This is the strenght of the writer, getting better the real life, finding the main strenght of an ordinary story and making it interesting and almost poetic. her characters are described in a wonderful way, she evokes what they think, we know every character's trait, every shade, strenghts and weaknesses. It's like Mrs Munro turns on the light and makes clearer the relationships between people. Never easy, never predictable, but mirror of what we are, we know, we feel.
And this Nobel prize can't be for a better writer.
