Narra la storia di Mary, ragazzina viziata e antipatica che si trasferisce in Inghilterra dall'India a causa della morte dei genitori per un'epidemia di colera. La casa dello zio é enorme e piena di misteri, ma quello che maggiormente la attrae é la presenza di un giardino secreto dove nessuno può entrare e la cui chiave é stata gettata via. Piano piano Mary diventa più autonoma, si fa degli amici, diventa più gentile e sorridente. E il benefico effetto aiuterà anche Colin, il cugino malato, che grazie a lei e al fiabesco Dickon, ritroverà la salute e l'amore di suo padre.
Il libro é assolutamente adorabile. Essendo una storia per ragazzi, ovviamente sono particolarmente accentuati gli insegnamenti, la descrizione dei progressi dei ragazzi. Il personaggio di Dickon é poi esageratamente idealizzato, quasi un novello San Francesco che parla con gli animali. Ma il messaggio ottimista é semplice e profondo allo stesso tempo.
Molto carino, mi ha fatto venire voglia di trasferirmi nello Yorkshire!

It's been a long time since the last time I've read a Children Book. Apart Harry Potter, but I've never consider it as part of that category. So, one day, I was at a bookstore with this book in my hand. I know pretty well the other book written by the same author, Little Lord Fauntleroy, but this one was unknown.
It tells the story of Mary, spoiled and unpleasant girl who move to England from India because the death of her parents due to cholera. Her uncle's house is huge and full of secret rooms, but what capture her imagination most is a secret garden where nobody can go in and whose key is threw out somewhere. Day by day, Mary becomes more indipendent, meets some friends, is nicer and more smiling. This positive effect will help Colin too, her sick cousin, who thanks to her and the fairy Dickon, will recover.
The story is absolutely adorable. It's a story for children, so of course, the teachings are marked. The character of Dickon is extremely idealized, almost a new St Francis who talks with animals. But the positive message is easy and deep at the same time. Very nice, made me want to move to Yorkshire!
