Non posso che confermare quello che già dissi, ovvero che la Cather non solo ha dalla sua una mente che la porta a creare storie interessanti e mai banali, ma ha anche il dono di una scrittura elegante, che rende tutto ancora più prezioso.
Questo romanzo narra la storia di Mrs Marian Forrester, seconda moglie del capitano Forrester, oggetto dei pensieri dei ragazzini del paese dove la coppia passa l'estate, e soprattutto i pensieri di Neil Herbert. Donna di mondo, sempre splendida e di classe. Ma, e quindi cito il retro di copertina, "il loro splendore è dunque alimentato sempre da qualcosa di sordido e di oscuro?" Lo scopriremo solo con la lettura, il significato di quel "perduta" del titolo che a me ha creato tanti interrogativi, e che probabilmente avrei tradotto in altri modi.
Un romanzo di classe, con qualcosa di sordido.
Ho seguito il consiglio di Francis Scott Fitzgerald, che la inserì tra le scrittrici migliori della sua generazione. E non potrei essere più d'accordo.

After "Not Under Forty", read one month ago, it's the turn of a novel, also by Willa Cather.
I can only confirm what I previously said, that Cather not only has a mind that leads her to create interesting and never banal stories, but also has the gift of an elegant writing, which makes everything even more precious.
This novel tells the story of Mrs Marian Forrester, second wife of Captain Forrester, object of the children's thoughts in the country town where the couple spends the summer, and above all the thoughts of Neil Herbert. Woman of the world, always beautiful and classy. But, and then I quote the back cover, "is their splendor therefore always fed by something sordid and obscure?" We will find out only with the reading, the meaning of that "lost" of the title that has created so many questions, and that I would probably have translated in other ways.
A classy novel, with something sordid.
I followed the advice of Francis Scott Fitzgerald, who inserted her among the best writers of his generation. And I could not agree more.
