All'inizio, le prime pagine, non mi erano sembrate granché ma avevo comunque voluto dargli una possibilità. Ho fatto bene perché in fondo, questo libro si é rivelato molto piacevole.
I protagonisti della storia sono i componenti della famiglia Carroll. Il Maggiore, il capofamiglia, uomo stimato da tutta la comunità per la sua distinzione e la sua integrità; Madam Carroll, la moglie adorata; Sara Carroll, la figlia di primo letto del maggiore, appena tornata a casa dopo un periodo di residenza a casa dello zio; Scar, il figlio di secondo letto. Quando Sara torna a casa si aspetta di riprendere le conversazioni con quel padre molto amato, ma, a sua insaputa, il padre si é ammalato gravemente e la sua mente non é più quella che lei ricorda. La malattia del Maggiore viene tenuta nascosta a tutta la cittadinanza, con piccoli accorgimenti ben studiati.
Nella piccola cittadina del sud degli Stati Uniti, presto, arriva un bel giovane musicista che nasconde un segreto... E le due donne di casa si giocheranno tutto per Il Maggiore, l'uomo il cui amore le lega nel profondo.
Un romanzo breve molto ben scritto e interessante, molto pacato nei modi per riprendere la stessa atmosfera pacata e garbata del paesino in cui é ambientata la storia. Le due donne, tanto diverse e tanto unite nell'amore per il Maggiore, sono il fulcro della storia, le loro storie passate e il futuro che ne verrà. Entrambe portate a recitare un ruolo per mantenere la tranquillità, mentire certo, ma a fin di bene, per proteggere e prendersi cura di colui che e il centro della loro vita.

When I started this book, I didn't know the writer and I had no idea of what I was going to read.
At the beginning, I didn't like the first pages very much, but I wanted to give it a chance. Good idea because, at the end, this book is very pleasant.
The main characters in this novel are the members of Carroll's family.
The Major, the head of household, esteemed man for his distinction and his integrity; Madam Carroll, his beloved wife; Sara Carroll, the daughter of the Major from the first marriage, just back in town after a period of time living in his uncle's house; Scar, son of the Major and Madam Carroll. When Sarah comes back home, she imagines her conversations with her fathers, exactly how it was before her departure. But she doesn't know that he fell ill and his mind is no more the same. The Major's disease is kept hidden by the citizenship, with little precautions.
In the little town in the South of United States, soon, arrives an handsome young musician with a secret... and the two women will bet everything just for the Major, the man who both them love deeply.
A short novel, well-written and interesting, a polite and nice atmosphere of the little town. The two women, so different and so tight in their love for the Major, are the cornerstone, their past and their future tied together. They have to play a rule to keep the peace, they lie but well-meant, to protect and care the man who is the center of their life.
