Il protagonista assoluto, nonché narratore, è Mr Stevens, maggiordomo per 35 anni per Lord Darlington nel maniero di Darlington Hall, e attualmente alle dipendenze, sempre nella stessa casa, per Mr Farraday, americano. Durante un viaggio in macchina fino alla Cornovaglia, fino a Miss Kenton (o Mrs Bree), Stevens ritorna con la memoria a vari avvenimenti della sua vita, seguendo lo stream of consciousness. Dai più personali, come il rapporto con il padre, al suo precedente datore di lavoro, a cui diede fedeltà assoluta. Molto interessante la ricostruzione di come funzionasse una casa aristocratica in quegli anni, quanto personale di servizio fosse impiegato, quali fossero i doveri di un buon maggiordomo. Ishiguro ci fa entrare direttamente in un mondo che abbiamo imparato a conoscere con Downton Abbey, e che personalmente mi interessa moltissimo.
Ah ecco, l'amore. É vero, non ho proprio trovato quello che pensavo. Ma é in tutto il libro, in piccole scene, che solo alla fine si chiariranno. Ed é per quello che vi lascio senza dirvi niente a riguardo. La sorpresa, come é stato per me.

Maybe I say it too much times, but I was expecting something totally different for this book. It was a list of books about unreciprocated love and in my mind there was a contemporary setting, two young characters, broken hearts. Instead it was a surprise from the first page.
The main character, and also narrator, is Mr Stevens, butler for 35 years of Lord Darlington in the manor house Darlington Hall, and currently at Mr Farraday's disposal, American man. During a road trip to Cornwall, to visit Miss Kenton (now Mrs Bree), Stevens reminds various events in his life, following a stream of consciousness. From the most personal ones, his relationships with his father and his previous employer, to whom he pledged absolute loyalty. Very interesting the reenactment of how a manor house is run, how much servants need, the duties of a good butler. Ishiguro leads us in a world we know thanks to Downton Abbey, and I am personally very interested in it.
Ah, right, love. It's true, I didn't find what I was looking for. But it is in the entire book, in very little scenes, discovered just at the end. This is the reason why I leave you without telling it. Surprise, as it was for me.
