Il libro sicuramente più atteso del 2020, dal momento stesso in cui è uscita la notizia che la coppia degli Obama avrebbe scritto un libro a testa riguardo gli anni del mandato presidenziale. Quello di Michelle Obama è stata una bellissima lettura, più leggero perché riguardante il lato più personale della loro vita alla Casa Bianca. Il libro del Presidente Obama è invece dedicato alla politica, a ogni passaggio della sua presidenza. Questo è il primo volume di due che racconteranno l'intero arco degli 8 anni. Qui Obama fa inizialmente un breve excursus della sua vita prima di diventare presidente, la sua infanzia, i suoi studi, l'incontro e il matrimonio con Michelle, il lavoro da senatore e poi la campagna elettorale e i primi anni di presidenza. Si ferma parlando di due eventi apparentemente molto dissimili, ma che rivelano i due lati della presidenza: il grottesco delle accuse di Donald Trump, riprese poi dai media a livelli davvero eccessivi, di non essere nato negli Stati Uniti e quindi di essere un presidente illegittimo; il lato più difficile e duro, quando si trova a dover dare l'avvio alla missione che porterà alla cattura e alla morte di Osama Bin Laden.
Nel mezzo, Barack Obama parla e approfondisce tutti i momenti più importanti della sua presidenza: in ordine sparso, l'Obamacare, le crisi ambientali e sanitarie, le crisi in Medio Oriente, la Cina, i rapporti con gli altri capi di stato, la diplomazia estera, le trattative interne al Congresso e al Senato con i repubblicani. E' un libro incredibilmente ricco di dettagli, di spiegazioni, di riflessioni politiche e personali, di un uomo intelligente. Ovviamente, sia chiaro, è il suo punto di vista personale sulla faccenda, il modo come lui ha affrontato la sua presidenza.
Ampio spazio è dato alla sua squadra di governo, ai suoi collaboratori, ai politici con cui ha lavorato che l'hanno sostenuto.
E ovviamente, le parole migliori sono per la sua famiglia, per la moglie Michelle e per le figlie Malia e Sasha. Spesso e volentieri nel libro prende delle pause dalla narrazione per raccontare del tempo speso con loro, di come loro affrontassero la presidenza e le sue sfide, di come loro quattro siano una squadra indivisibile.
Non è assolutamente un libro difficile, non bisogna avere lauree in economia o in giurisprudenza. Anche nei momenti più tecnici, Obama spiega tutto in modo che sia comprensibile, con uno stile chiaro. Che sia un disegno di legge, una crisi bancaria, la situazione in paesi esteri, viene spiegata la situazione e quali sono stati passi dell'amministrazione. Questo aiuta anche la narrazione, lo stile di scrittura è molto piacevole, mai pesante. Ammetto, le parti più economiche le ho lette un po' in velocità, non perché non si capisse ma perché personalmente sono le parti che reputo più noiose per l'argomento trattato.
Non mi sono informata su quando uscirà il secondo volume, che tratterà degli altri quattro anni e poi... si vabbè, lo sapete, quella cosa assurda e intellettualmente incomprensibile dell'elezione del suo successore. Sono curiosa di sapere cosa ne pensa e se almeno lui riuscirà a spiegarmelo.
Come non sentire la mancanza di un presidente così pacato, razionale, colto?

Surely the most anticipated book of 2020, from the moment the news came out that the Obama couple would each write a book about the years of the presidency. Michelle Obama's one was a beautiful reading, lighter because it concerns the more personal side of their life in the White House. The book by President Obama is instead dedicated to politics, at each stage of his presidency. This is the first volume of two that will tell the entire span of the 8 years. Here Obama initially makes a brief excursus of his life before becoming president, his childhood, his studies, his meeting and marriage with Michelle, his job as a senator and then the electoral campaign and the first years of presidency. He stops talking about two apparently very dissimilar events, but which reveal the two sides of the presidency: the grotesque of Donald Trump's accusations, then taken up by the media at really excessive levels, of not being born in the United States and therefore of being an illegitimate president ; the most difficult and hard side, when he finds himself having to start the mission that will lead to the capture and death of Osama Bin Laden.
In between, Barack Obama talks and explores all the most important moments of his presidency: in no particular order, Obamacare, environmental and health crises, the Middle East, China, relations with other heads of state, foreign diplomacy, internal negotiations in Congress and the Senate with the Republicans. It is an incredibly rich book of details, explanations, political and personal reflections, by an intelligent man. Obviously, it is his personal point of view on the matter, the way he has approached his presidency.
The right amount of pages is given to his government team, to his collaborators, to the politicians he worked with who supported him.
And of course, the best words are for his family, Michelle and their daughters Malia and Sasha. Very often in the book he takes breaks from the narrative to tell about the time spent with them, how they faced the presidency and its challenges, how the four of them are an indivisible team.
It is by no means a difficult book, you don't need to have degrees in economics or law. Even in the most technical moments, Obama explains everything in a way that is understandable, with a clear style. Whether it is a bill, a banking crisis, the situation in foreign countries, the situation is explained and what steps the administration has taken. This also helps the storytelling, the writing style is very pleasant, never heavy. I admit, I've read a bit quickly the economic parts, not because you don't understand but because personally they are the parts that I consider most boring for the subject matter.
I didn't know when the second volume will come out, in which he will deal with the other four years and then... oh well, you know, that absurd and intellectually incomprehensible election of his successor. I'm curious to know what he thinks and if at least he will be able to explain it to me.
How can we not miss such a calm, rational, cultured president?
