Simona Siri is living permanently in the United States since seven years. First for work and then deciding to stay there after meeting the man who will become her husband (and co-author of the book) Dan Gerstein.
This Never been so United (States), starting from the election of President Trump, tells the United States from two very different points of view: that of Simona, born and raised in Italy, more introverted and more anxious, and that of Dan, born and raised in the United States, more inclined to social life and more confident in the future. It is a meeting / clash of two completely different ways of living life, love, friendship, food! In this book they tell us their different points of view on many issues and their way of meeting halfway, to understand that those ideas come from where they grew up. It is extremely interesting to read their different points of view and to see America and Americans from two such different lenses.
One thing that I will never tire of saying myself, you can never say "Americans are this" because even within the United States there are a thousand differences and as Simona and Dan say very well, for example, Los Angeles and New York is separated not only by 6 hours by plane, but also by two completely different ways of living! Or Washington DC and a small town in Mississippi are two completely different worlds where people live and think in different ways.
I already follow Simona Siri on social media and I really appreciate her reports around New York, now with little Ella Mae to whom the book is dedicated and the last chapter, in which they tell their experience with adoption and with a life completely changed in a beautiful way by this little girl. I find it absolutely intelligent and admirable that they want to raise her in full respect of her African-American origins, explaining who she is and showing her many wonderful examples of African-American women such as the magnificent Michelle Obama.
Very interesting book, it explains life in New York very well from the point of view of an American in love with the United States and her American husband.
