For a long time I've seen this book on the shelves of the library and only now have I decided to read it? What a waste of time... taking so long to read such a beautiful and interesting book!!
Benedetta Craveri, a French history scholar, narrates the series of queens and lovers of the French royal family between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, from Catherine de Medici to Marie Antoinette, passing through the various favorites such as Madame de Pompadour and Madame du Barry.
It's an interesting and compelling narrative, it manages to make you feel the atmosphere in which these women, powerful, intelligent, frivolous, loved or hated, lived and acted. And their husbands, the kings of France, and especially the court at Versailles that surrounded them. Not just wives and lovers, but queens, often queen mothers who reigned in place of their still-too-young children, or shrewd consultants behind the scenes. As much as we think we know them, it is always surprising to read their stories, sometimes directly from their letters and diaries, and discover new details that were not known. Thus, those faces portrayed in the appendix in the middle of the book, acquire life and character.
How much desire left me to visit Paris and Versailles, where most of these events took place, the Louvre, walking along the banks of the Seine... how wonderful.
