Ovviamente non posso non leggere qualunque cosa sia uscita dalla penna di Virginia Woolf e così, quando è uscito questo libro, sono corsa a a prenotarlo e a ritirarlo il giorno stesso della sua uscita!
Come è chiaro già dalla copertina, si tratta dello scambio epistolare tra Virginia Woolf e Lytton Strachey, scrittore e autore tra gli altri di una famosa biografia della regina Vittoria, membro di Bloomsbury.
Di cosa parlano due amici scrittori? Ovviamente di libri, tantissimo, di cosa hanno letto, di scrittori che gli piacciono e altri meno come Joyce, di cosa scrivono, si inviano le proprie bozze per recensioni o correzioni... ma anche organizzano incontri, spettegolano, parlano del tempo e dei propri malanni.
Non aspettatevi grandi rivelazioni o grandi colpi di scena, a parte la statura immensa di entrambi sono lettere molto "normali", per quanto brillanti e colte. E' un po' come sbirciare nel privato di due grandi scrittori, una più divertente ed esuberante, lui più pacato e formale.
Da notare la ragione per cui sono presenti più lettere della Woolf che di Strachey, e non è una scelta dei curatori: il fatto semplicemente è che Lytton Strachey era uno molto metodico e conservava tutto, mentre pare che Virginia Woolf fosse meno attenta a queste cose e infatti molte delle lettere di lui andranno perse.
Libro interessante per chi ha un interesse speciale per uno dei due autori, ma sinceramente non so quanto potrebbe essere interessante per gli altri.

Obviously I have to read whatever came out of Virginia Woolf's pen and so, when this book came out, I booked it and picked it up on the day of its release!
As is clear from the cover, this is the correspondence between Virginia Woolf and Lytton Strachey, writer and author, among others, of a famous biography of Queen Victoria, and a member of Bloomsbury.
What are two fellow writers talking about? Obviously books, a lot, what they've read, writers they like and others less like Joyce, what they write, they send their drafts for reviews or corrections... but they also organize meetings, they gossip and talk about time and their own ailments.
Don't expect big revelations or big twists, apart from the immense stature of both these are very "normal" letters, however brilliant and cultured. It's a bit like peering into the privacy of two great writers, she, more fun and exuberant, he, more calm and formal.
Note the reason why there are more letters by Woolf than Strachey, and it is not a choice of the editors: the simple fact is that Lytton Strachey was very methodical and save everything, while it seems that Virginia Woolf was less attentive to these things and indeed many of his letters will be lost.
Interesting book for those who have a special interest in one of the two authors, but honestly I don't know how interesting it could be for the others.
