Una saga familiare, scritta da Virginia Woolf. E ovviamente, non poteva essere banale. La famiglia Pargiter, famiglia della upper middle class inglese, raccontata attraverso gli anni. C'è spazio anche per rami collaterali della famiglia, per nipoti, cugini, zii. Come un album fotografico, la Woolf ci racconta momenti della vita dei Pargiter, incontri, cene, feste. Tutti insieme, ad affrontare gli anni che passano, i cambiamenti di stile di vita.
C'è la guerra, le classi sociali, le lotte femministe, e poi il lato più intimo, con gli amori, i matrimoni, i lutti, la malattia, la vecchiaia. Tutto cambia, tutto va avanti, e l'autrice ce lo mostra con i suoi personaggi e l'effetto che il cambiamento ha sulle loro vite. Quindi, dalle grandi case con servitù, si passa a case più confortevoli ma in cui bisogna fare da sé, e in cui le grandi magioni vengono vendute a causa delle tasse troppo alte. Ci sono donne che decidono della propria vita, preferiscono lunghi viaggi in India, alla scoperta del mondo e di loro stesse, o le lotte del femminismo, piuttosto che a sposarsi e ad avere figli.
Non poteva che essere un libro magnifico. Non so perché ci ho messo 8 mesi per leggerlo. Non me lo so spiegare.

A family saga, written by Virginia Woolf. And of course, it could not be trivial. The Pargiter family, a family of the English upper middle class, told through the years. There is space for family side branches, for grandchildren, cousins, uncles and aunts. Like a photo album, Woolf tells us about moments of Pargiter's life, meetings, dinners, parties. All together, to face the years that pass, lifestyle changes.
There is war, social classes, feminist struggles, and then the most intimate side, with loves, weddings, mourning, illness, old age. Everything changes, everything goes on, and the author shows us with her characters and the effect that change has on their lives. So, from large houses with servitude, one goes to more comfortable homes but in which you have to do it yourself, and where large mansions are sold because of the too high fees. There are women who decide on their own life, they prefer long trips to India, the discovery of the world and themselves, or the struggles of feminism, rather than marrying and having children.
It could only be a magnificent book. I do not know why I put 8 months to read it. I do not know how to explain it.
