Crocevia, titolo decisamente azzeccato, è davvero un crocevia di tante storie diverse: la critica alla situazione politica del Perù, alla corruzione dilagante sotto il presidente Fujimori e il Doctor; è la storia di come l'opinione pubblica venisse orientata pro o contro determinate persone dai giornali e giornalisti orchestrati dal governo, e il loro ruolo; un romanzo erotico.
Fa da palcoscenico la città di Lima, senza mezze misure tra zone di ville con cinema privati, e i quartieri dove entrano solo criminali e sbirri.
E adesso passiamo alla recensione più personale. Libro scritto benissimo, si legge con grande facilità e interesse, personaggi strepitosi. Ma... forse con troppa facilità. Ricordavo il saggio sul mondo contemporaneo, e mi sembrava di leggere due libri scritti da due persone molto diverse. Certo, saggio e romanzo hanno due registri diversi. Ma la differenza era proprio grande... per non parlare dei discorsi delle coppie presenti, tutti così sdolcinati e quasi fastidiosi.
Insomma, libro interessante e istruttivo riguardo alla storia del Perù. Ma presumibilmente mi aspettavo maggior peso. Non che mi stia lamentando, sia chiaro, meglio questo di uno quei polpettoni illegibili. Ma leggerò sicuramente uno dei primi libri per farmi una idea più completa. Nessuna rimandatura a settembre per questo libro, una promozione. Ma non pienissima.

Months ago, I read an essay by Mario Vargas Llosa, entitled "The civilization of the show". I loved it, and indeed he deserved the highest mark. I have remained since then with the fascination for this Nobel Prize writer, but I had not read anything else. And here this novel occurred to me in the library. It was time to go on with my knowledge of his writing.
Crossroads (in Italian), a very appropriate title, is really a crossroads of many different stories: the criticism of Peru's political situation, the rampant corruption under President Fujimori and the Doctor; it is the story of how public opinion was directed for or against certain people by newspapers and journalists orchestrated by the government, and their role; an erotic novel.
The city of Lima acts as a stage, with no half measures between areas of villas with private cinemas, and neighborhoods where only criminals and cops enter.
And now let's move on to the more personal review. Book written very well, I read it with great ease and interest, amazing characters. But... perhaps too easily. I remembered the essay on the contemporary world, and I seemed to read two books written by two very different people. Certainly, essay and novel have two different registers. But the difference was just too great... not to mention the speeches of the couples, all so sugary and almost annoying.
In short, an interesting and informative book about the history of Peru. But presumably I expected more importance. Not that I'm complaining, of course, better than one of those illegible meatloafs. But I will certainly read one of the first books to make me a more complete idea. No resitting in September for this book, a promotion. But not full.
