Questo libriccino mi ha incuriosito perchè non è un romanzo, ma è composto di sei saggi riguardanti la letteratura, in vario modo. Dall'amicizia della Cather con la nipote di Flaubert, quella Caro a cui il tenero zio scrisse lettere; alla storia di un salotto letterario, quello di Miss Annie Adams Fields e Miss Jewett, al 128 di Charles Street a Boston. Una Gertrude Stein a Boston, amica di Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Mark Twain e, ovviamente, Willa Cather. E poi Katherine Mansfield, e Thomas Mann.
La letteratura viene raccontata e spiegata, in queste pagine, con tanta passione e con "intelligenza della letteratura".
Nel mio cuore hanno un posto speciale quei libri che parlano del mondo della letteratura, e che ne parlano con quella "luce negli occhi" che ho anche io quando ne parlo.
Ed è per questo che ho amato queste pagine.
Il titolo originale è "Not Under Forty" perchè la Cather riteneva di poterli sconsigliare a chi avesse meno di quarant'anni, in quanto gli autori di cui parla, tanto cari a lei, avevano, nella sua opinione, smesso di parlare ai più giovani.
Credo che autori come Thomas Mann e Gustave Flaubert non smetteranno mai di parlare ai lettori. Ma, essendo dei classici assoluti, probabilmente le giovani menti li ritengono pesanti e noiosi. Polemicamente, potrei associarmi. Ma chissà che questa mia recensione non faccia scattare la curiosità a qualche Under40. Io, per esempio, seppure ancora per solo due anni, lo sono.
E mi auguro che allo stesso modo possa far venire la curiosità di scoprire o ri-scoprire la Cather.

I've known and appreciated Willa Cather especially for the beautiful novel "My Mortal Enemy". I was curious to know if I would like the other works too.
This book has made me curious because it is not a novel, but it is composed of six essays about literature, in various ways. From Cather's friendship with Flaubert's niece, that Caro to whom he, tender uncle, wrote letters; to the story of a literary salon, of Mrs Annie Adams Fields and Mrs Jewett, at 128 Charles Street in Boston. A Gertrude Stein in Boston, friend of Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Mark Twain, and of course Willa Cather. And then Katherine Mansfield, and Thomas Mann.
Literature is told and explained in these pages with so much passion and "literature intelligence".
My heart has a special place in those books that speak of the world of literature, and they talk with that "light in the eyes" that I also have when I talk about it.
That's why I loved these pages.
The original title is "Not Under Forty" because Cather felt sthat he could not recommend it to those who were less than forty years old, since the authors she spoke of, so dear to her, had, in her opinion, stopped talking to the younger generation.
I think authors such as Thomas Mann and Gustave Flaubert will never stop talking to readers. But, being absolute classics, probably the young minds find them heavy and boring. Polemically, I might associate. But who knows that my review does not trigger the curiosity of some Under40s. For example, still for two years, I am one of them too.
And I hope that the curiosity of discovering or re-discovering Cather may also be the same.
