Il colonnello, senza nome, è stato tesoriere della rivoluzione nella circoscrizione di Macondo, e portò a dorso di mula due bauli con i documenti della guerra civile. Documenti la cui ricevuta venne firmata di pugno da Aureliano Buendia, intendente generale delle forze rivoluzionarie nel litorale Atlantico. Quei documenti sono l'assicurazione del colonnello, che sta aspettando da vent'anni la lettera che il governo gli aveva promesso. La risposta sta tutta nel titolo.
Ormai anziano e i valorosi giorni della guerra passati, il colonnello vive di stenti con la moglie e la sua unica fonte di speranza è un gallo da combattimento.
Marquez non si smentisce e crea una storia con un protagonista che in altri casi sarebbe uno sconfitto, ma che qui risalta come eroico e solenne, uno con una speranza: il gallo da combattimento, come lui piccolo ma indomito.
Adoro il mondo di Marquez, quel mondo così... scusate, ma oltre a sudamericano non mi viene, un'atmosfera calda, un po' afosa, ma piena di vita.
Un libriccino come ho già detto di 77 pagine, ma scritto da Marquez rimane sempre un mondo grande, infinito.

Marquez never disappoints and creates a story with a protagonist that in other cases would be a loser, but here stands out as heroic and solemn, one with a hope: the fighting cock, like him small but indomitable.
I love the world of Marquez, that world so... sorry, but in addition to South American no more, a warm world, a bit sultry, but full of life.
A booklet as I have already said of 77 pages, but written by Marquez is always a great, infinite world.
