Shaun Bythell è il proprietario di The Bookshop, una libreria che vende volumi usati, a Wigtown, in Scozia. Nel suo diario racconta la vita quotidiana di un libraio, i clienti più bizzarri, le assistenti non da meno, e soprattutto il lavoro stesso: raccogliere e selezionare i libri più interessanti dai venditori, la vendita attraverso Amazon e altri siti, organizzare il festival di Wigtown, il rapporto con gli ebook.
Il libro non è solo interessante ma è anche molto divertente. Temo di rientrare in due delle categorie più odiate da Shaun Bythell: non solo sono una bibliotecaria, ma ho letto il suo libro via Kobo... sapendo cosa ne pensa dei Kindle, credo di poter ringraziare il destino che ha posto il mio prezioso aggeggino lontano dal libraio!
Inoltre, e qui aggiungo una nota personale... pur non essendoci mai stata, ho sempre avuto una certa predilezione per la Scozia. E' un posto su cui ho letto tanto, ogni tanto per interesse personale provo anche ad imparare il gaelico scozzese ma purtroppo non vado mai oltre la prima lezione. Insomma, leggere questo libro, sapere che era lì, ogni tanto spiluzziccare un riferimento a qualche località, beh, sono stati tanti piccoli sorsi di un luogo a me caro, seppur da lontano. Un giorno, chissà, ci arriverò... e una delle tappe non potrà che essere Wigtown. Senza Kobo, ovviamente.

I did not think this book had followed me for so many months. Yet I realize that he stayed in my bedside table for three months. The explanation, however, is simple: I read a certain number of pages every so often, because being quite repetitive as a diary I did not want to get bored, and so I could fully enjoy it.
Shaun Bythell is the owner of The Bookshop, a bookstore that sells used books in Wigtown, Scotland. In his diary he tells the daily life of a bookseller, the most bizarre clients, but the assistants are definitely not less, and especially the job itself: collect and select the most interesting books from sellers, sell through Amazon and other sites, organize the festival of Wigtown, the relationship with ebooks.
The book is not only interesting but it is also a lot of fun. I'm afraid to fall into two of the most hated categories by Shaun Bythell: not only am I a librarian, but I've read his book via Kobo ... knowing what he thinks about Kindle, I think I can thank the fate that has placed my precious gadget away from the bookseller!
Also, and here I add a personal note... although I've never been there, I have always had a certain fondness for Scotland. It's a place I've read so much about, occasionally for personal interest I also try to learn Scottish Gaelic but unfortunately I never went beyond the first lesson. In short, to read this book, to know that it was there, occasionally spilling out a reference to some locality, well, there were so many small sips of a place dear to me, even from afar. One day, who knows, I will get there... and one of the stops will for sure be Wigtown. Without Kobo, of course.
