La storia di svolge nell'università di Hampden, nel Vermont. Richard, la voce narrante, riesce a farsi ammettere alla sceltissima classe di greco antico del professor Julian Morrow. Entra così a far parte di un'élite, ricchi rampolli di famiglie ricche, un'amicizia talmente forte da formare un circolo chiuso, vite sempre in bilico tra estrema razionalità e follia.
Un libro intelligente, che solo una persona di una grande cultura avrebbe potuto scrivere, con i suoi rimandi al greco e al latino, alle opere della letteratura classica.

By Donna Tartt I've already read "The Goldfinch". Beautiful. But this one, this "The secret history", this is a masterpiece. Stunning. I've finished it just one minute ago, and as soon as I turned the last page I've been gathered by a scary thought: "It's over." I won't read anymore about Richard, Henry, Bunny, Francis, the twins Charles and Camilla. I won't know anything new about them."
The beauty of this book is emotionally devastating. The writing, the plot, the characters. Perfect.
The story is set in Vermont, at the Hampden College. Richard, the story's narrator, is admitted to the exclusive Ancient Greek course, held by the professor Julian Morrow. So he joins in with the elite of students, rich descendants of very wealthy families, a bond so strong to create a closed circle, lives hanging in balance between extreme rationality and madness.
A cultured book, that just a person of learning can write, full of cross references to Greek and Roman culture, to Classic literature.
