Nicole e Dick sono marito e moglie. Ricchi, belli, eleganti. Sono le persone da frequentare per divertirsi. Spendono allegramente e si godono fino in fondo la vita. Il loro rapporto però fin dall'inizio è stato contrassegnato da un senso di protezione di Dick verso Nicole, un prendersi cura di lei come fosse un'immagine incredibilmente fragile. Dick, l'uomo di mondo, lo psichiatra di fama mondiale, bello e attraente; Nicole, bellissima e elegante, ma in realtà bisognosa di approvazione, in cerca di conferme.
É un romanzo che dà l'impressione di scivolare sulle vite dei suoi protagonisti, di questi protagonisti che anche quando sono coinvolti in risse se la cavano sempre e finiscono la loro giornata con un whisky. Quella vita elegante che Scott desiderava. Nicole é ovviamente Zelda. La sua malattia, quella bellezza invidiata da tutti. Parti delle lettere di Zelda sono riportate pari pari in questo romanzo. E anche l'alcolismo di Dick, il suo piano piano trascinarsi giù, é quello di Scott.
Vediamo molto dei Fitzgerald in questo romanzo. Quello che sono, quello che Scott vorrebbe.
Quello che ha fatto é creare un romanzo bellissimo. Un vero capolavoro. Il suo ultimo romanzo completo. É come se finalmente, in quest'ultimo romanzo, Scott abbia raggiunto il suo stile più maturo. Niente cuore in fibrillazione stavolta. Ma una maturità che lascia il segno maggiormente.

Scott never disappoints me. Every book written by him is a masterpiece. And if the first two caused me pain in my belly for the turmoil, this one has been another kind of shock.
Nicole and Dick are wife and husband. Rich, beautiful, elegant. They are that kind of people you have to be friend with to have fun. They spend a lot of money without any regret and enjoy their life completely. Their relationship from the beginning is characterised by a protection of Dick for Nicole, a taking care of her as an incredibly fragile person. Dick, the man of the world, the psychiatrist of good repute, handsome and attractive; Nicole, beautiful and elegant, but actually looking for approval.
It's a novel that, when you read it, you feel like "sliding" in the main characters' lives, of those main characters that are fine even when involved in scuffles and finish their days with an elegant cocktail.
Nicole is of course Zelda. Her illness, that so envyed beauty. Parts of Zelda's real letters are in this novel. And Dick's alcoholism, his dragging himself down, is Scott's alcoholism.
We can find a lot of Fitzgeralds' in this novel. How they are, what Scott would want.
What he did is making a beautiful novel. A true masterpiece. His last complete novel. It's like finally, in this last novel, Scott reached his more mature writing. No heart in fibrillation this time. But a maturity that leaves the most his mark.
