Maria ha passato i quarant'anni ed aspetta di diventare madre dopo aver partorito. Irene è nata prematura, è in incubatrice. Maria aspetta di vederla respirare. Altro non sa. Come lei non sanno i dottori, che non hanno certezze, che sanno solo darle uno spettro di possibilità, dalla più positiva alla più negativa. Come lei gli altri genitori dei bambini del reparto, supporto morale e affettivo. Maria può solo aspettare.
Quasi un parallelismo c'è tra Maria mamma e Maria insegnante. La bambina che aspetta di "nascere", i suoi alunni che aspettano l'esame per avere finalmente la licenza media. Licenza che per tutti vuol dire soprattutto la possibilità di un lavoro più sicuro.
Lo spazio bianco è quel tempo che intercorre nell'attesa. Nella speranza di un futuro migliore. Triste, ma non ineluttabile. Solo bianco. Aspettando le sfumature.
Da questo libro, nel 2009, è uscito il film omonimo con protagonista Margherita Buy. Adesso da vedere.
