Teresa Ciabatti, narratrice e protagonista. E' lei, con la sua voce prima di bambina, di adolescente e poi di donna, a raccontarci di questo padre, Lorenzo Ciabatti, il professore. Lui, con il suo stuolo di infermieri e medici pronti a diventare idraulici e muratori se solo lui lo chiede, lui con il bunker sotto la piscina, lui con quell'anello che mai si toglie.
Un uomo per l'esterno generoso, umile, parsimonioso. Ma che poi si scopre fascista, massone, tirchio. Bugiardo. Un grattacielo, conti miliardari, appartamenti, tutto sparito nell'arco di poco. Cosa è successo? Chi è davvero Lorenzo Ciabatti?
Non sarà mica Giorgio Almirante, quello dietro la colonna al matrimonio? E quel Licio G. nei regali di nozze? E come mai il Professore, primario sì ma di un ospedale di provincia, conosce Sinatra, riceve ogni anni pacchi dalla Johnson & Johnson, è ospite italiano alle Olimpiadi? E chi sono quei "loro" che un giorno potrebbero venire a prenderlo?
Non troverete nessun personaggio senza macchia, nessuno di loro personaggi da apprezzare, da capire. La stessa Teresa è una bambina odiosa, capricciosa, testarda, viziatissima. Ma è grazie ai suoi ricordi che ricostruiamo la storia.
Un romanzo bellissimo. Per me, anche senza Premio Strega, uno dei libri italiani più belli dell'anno.

Second at the Premio Strega, I was more curious to read this book than the first ranked... because the story of the Professor's daughter had much more appeal to me than the story of the friendship of two little boys in the mountains, excuses me Mr Cognetti.
Teresa Ciabatti, narrator and protagonist. She, with her voice as a baby girl, a teenager and then a woman, tells us about her father, Lorenzo Ciabatti, the Professor. He, with his group of nurses and physicians ready to become plumber and bricklayer if he just asks, he with the bunker under the pool, he with that ring that never gets off.
A generous, humble, parsimonious man for the outside. But then one finds him a fascist, mason, shred. Liar. A skyscraper, billionaires bank accounts, apartments, all vanished in the space of little. What happened? Who is really Lorenzo Ciabatti?
Will not that be Giorgio Almirante, that one behind the column at the wedding? And that Licio G. in wedding gifts? And how does Professor, a primary yes but of a provincial hospital, knows Sinatra, receives parcels every year from Johnson & Johnson, is Italian host to the Olympics? And who are those "them" that one day might come to pick him up?
You will not find any spotless characters, none of their characters you are going to appreciate, to understand. Teresa herself is a hateful, capricious, stubborn little girl, very annoying. But is thanks to her memories that we reconstruct the story.
A beautiful novel. For me, even without the Premio Strega, one of the most beautiful Italian books of the year.
