Dal momento in cui ho letto questo libro, non sono più stata la stessa. Avevo meno di 18 anni, mi era stato regalato da un'amica di famiglia. Non so se l'avesse scelto sotto consiglio di una libraia o se fosse stata una scelta ragionata, o se invece quel volume rosso era stato selezionato per la sua grandezza e sicuramente sarebbe piaciuto a me che in famiglia ero famosa per apprezzare i cosiddetti "mattoni".
Comunque sia stato, quel libro è stato letto e riletto, e amato. E soprattutto mi ha cambiata in modo profondo. Mi ha aperto un portone su un mondo che non mi immaginavo nemmeno, un mondo di donne potenti, di donne che governavano un potere, di donne che con le loro decisioni valevano quanto se non di più di un uomo, anche di un re. Le storie mitologiche di cui avevo tanto letto, non erano più solo storie di maschi. Le donne c'erano ed erano figure importanti.
Inoltre, un mondo in cui la religione non era solo quella cristiana cattolica in cui ero cresciuta, ma una religione più vicina alla natura, all'uomo che sia uomo o donna.
Ai tempi però, non pensavo che fosse un libro così conosciuto. Credevo di essere una delle poche ad averlo letto. Le mie amiche non lo conoscevano e solo dopo potei confrontarmi con questo libro solo con quelle che erano più vicine al mondo dei giochi di ruolo o al mondo dark. Comunque, continuavo a credere di essere una di poche a conoscere e amare questo libro.
E il fatto che poi un'autrice che amo come Michela Murgia abbia scritto un libro proprio su quello, beh, è stato quasi un regalo per quella me ragazzina di tanto tempo fa. Perchè mi sono ritrovata nel suo sentire, parte di una comunità di persone che sono state toccate profondamente da quel libro.
Il libro è un'analisi dei vari aspetti del romanzo: uno studio delle singole personalità femminili, Viviana, Morgana, Igraine, Morgause, Ginevra; della religione come elemento fondamentale della storia; delle relazioni di potere e di magia. E anche, come la stessa Murgia ha scoperto questa storia e cosa ha portato nella sua vita e nel suo pensiero.
Se come me avete amato il libro e l'avete anche letto un paio di volte, sarà un ritornare in quelle pagine e ritrovare propri pensieri nei pensieri della Murgia, o altrimenti un modo per scoprirlo e per apprezzarne i diversi livelli di analisi presenti.
Sono delle visioni su Le nebbie di Avalon, avrei voluto fosse lungo il doppio per rimanere ancora un po' in quel mondo, tra quelle personagge fantastiche.

I'm briefly dipping into the past as an obligatory premise.
From the first moment I've read this book, I have not been the same. I was not yet 18, it has given to me as present by a family friend. I don't know if she had chosen it on the advice of a bookseller or if it had been a reasoned choice, or if that volume had been selected for its size and certainly would have liked me that in the family I was famous for appreciating heavy, big books.
Whatever it was, that book was read and re-read, and loved. And above all it has changed me profoundly. It opened a door to me on a world that I did not even imagine, a world of powerful women, women who ruled power, women who with their decisions were worth as much more than a man, even a king. The mythological stories I had read so much about were no longer just stories of males. The women were there and they were important figures.
Moreover, a world in which religion was not only the Catholic Christian in which I had grown up, but a religion closer to nature, to mankind who is man and woman.
At the time, however, I did not think it was such a well-known book. I thought I was one of the few to have read it. My friends didn't know it and only later I could deal with this book only with those who were closer to the world of role-playing games or the dark world. However, I continued to believe that I was one of the few to know and love this book.
And the fact that then a writer who I love as Michela Murgia wrote a book about that, well, it was almost a gift for that little girl from a long time ago. Because I found myself in her feeling, part of a community of people who have been deeply touched by that book.
This essay is an analysis of the various aspects of the novel: a study of individual female personalities, Viviane, Morgana, Igraine, Morgause, Gwenhwyfar; of religion as a fundamental element of history; of relations of power and magic. And also, as the same Murgia has discovered this story and what it has brought in her life and in her thinking.
If, like me, you have loved the book and you have read it a couple of times, it will be a return to those pages and find your own thoughts in the thoughts of the Murgia, or otherwise a way to discover it and to appreciate the different levels of analysis.
They are visions of The Mists of Avalon, I wish it were twice as long to remain a bit in that world, among those fantastic characters.
