Prende corpo, anima e mente. Tra dolore e piacere.
Un genio. Nessuno come lui.

******************************************************************************
The beauty of Ian McEwan's novels is that, invariably, will leave you with a sort of great pain in the center of the stomach. A total upheaval of the mind and body. As for this book, I am still under the influence.
The second book of his work, released in 1981, has Mary and Colin as main characters. They are an  English couple of tourists visiting a city that is never mentioned explicitly, but many details reminiscent of Venice.
The two are not married, he's her new boyfriend and she has an ex-husband and two children at home, and she feels guilty for having left without them. One evening, after dinner, they meet Robert, authoritarian and mysterious. The main characters make quickly the knowledge of Caroline, his wife. A woman who "gave the impression of having a delightful secret", a woman who knows that "great pain in the center of the stomach."
From this point I will not say anything more, leaving you the pleasure of discovering this story. McEwan reveals it little by little, raising the voltage up to the highest vertex and then leaving us petrified on the last page.
The perfect style of the author takes us fully into the story, without being able to remain detached. It takes our body, soul and mind. Between pain and pleasure.
A genius. Nobody like him.
