Nel 1992, Joyce Carol Oates riprende questa storia e scrive Acqua nera. Il nome della ragazza e del luogo sono cambiati, e lui viene sempre chiamato Il Senatore. Ma nessuno può equivocare su chi siano i veri protagonisti. E' un racconto di brevi capitoli, dal punto di vista della ragazza. L'incidente, le sensazioni della ragazza mentre è ancora nella macchina, vengono intervallate dai suoi ricordi, la festa, i genitori, l'amore. Kelly Kelleher (questo il suo nome) è vista come una giovane ingenua e romantica, convinta che quello che è successo alla festa sia qualcosa di speciale, che quell'uomo così affascinante e gentile e potente l'abbia "scelta", che il loro sarà un grande amore. Una donna che si fida di un uomo molto più maturo e potente, e ne viene tradita.
Tutto questo mentre, pagina dopo pagina, assistiamo al suo annegamento, le sue gambe incastrate, la macchina sottosopra, l'acqua nera che inesorabilmente entra nella macchina, la sua speranza che tutto andrà bene, che lui la tirerà fuori, che all'ospedale guarirà.
La Oates è una maestra nel creare queste pagine di suspense, avanzando nella storia a poco a poco. E anche se sapevo perfettamente cosa sarebbe successo, non vedevo l'ora di arrivare alla fine, di sapere.
Una lettura appassionante, ipnotizzante, meravigliosa.

The 18th of June, 1969, in the island of Chappaquiddick, the then-senator Ted Kennedy went of the road with his car, the vehicle falls in the river and sinks down. In that car, stuck, there is Mary Jo Kopechne, who drowns. Ted tries to rescue her, without succeeding, then goes back to the party to help and to talk with his lawyer, before reporting to the police. That scandal damaged his reputation and closed the door to a candidacy for presidency. In 1992, Joyce Carol Oates writes Black Water, based on this story. The girl and the place's names are changed, and he's only called the Senator.
But nobody can misunderstand who are the real main characters. It's a story in short chapters, from the victim's point of view. The accident, the feelings of the girl while she is still in the car, are spaced out with her memories, the party, her parents, love. Kelly Kelleher (this is how she is called) is a romantic and naive young girl, sure that something special happened at the party, that that so charming and kind and powerful man "has chosen" her, that their will be a true love. A woman who trust an older and powerful man, and whose trust is violated.
Pages after pages we witness her drowning, her stuck legs, the car is upside down, the black water flows inexorably in the car, her hope everything will be fine, he will rescue her, she'll be cured to the hospital.
Mrs Oates is the best in leaving us breathless, progressing slowly but surely. And even if I kewn exactly what's going to happen, I was looking forward to reading the end, to knowing.
A fascinating reading, enchanting, wonderful.
