Ritroviamo Janna, cinquantecinquenne, la sua vita piena tra il lavoro come vicedirettrice di Lilith, la convivenza forzata con la difficile nipote Kate, gli impegni con le vecchiette di cui si prende cura.
Ma finalmente, anche per lei sembra arrivare qualcuno, un fascinoso dottore di nome Richard. Anche lui però con una vita piena di persone...
Doris Lessing è maestra nel raccontare la vita delle donne, le piccole cose, anche i sentimenti e le pulsioni di cui ci vergogniamo. Bravissima a creare i personaggi, dai pensieri ai piccoli dettagli fisici, è come vederli perfettamente rappresentati nella nostra testa. Nessuno di loro è perfetto, nessuno è un eroe o eroina di buoni sentimenti, ed è questo a renderli credibili, seppure con questo continuo richiamo alla perfezione d'arredamento delle case e lo stile impeccabile nel vestire.
Complice ovviamente anche l'isolamento imposto, l'ho letto in due giorni, ma l'avrei comunque divorato, ho messo da parte qualunque altro libro stessi leggendo per dedicarmi completamente a questo romanzo.
Meraviglia. E adesso un po' mi dispiace lasciare Janna e tutti gli altri personaggi.

This book is not a new reading for me, but a rereading of a book that I didn't remember reading and didn't know was the sequel to The Diary of a Good Neighbour. So, although it has never been moved from its place on the shelf of books, for me it is like a new book.
We find Janna, fiftyfive years old, her full life between working as vice director of Lilith, a forced cohabitation with the difficult granddaughter Kate, the commitments with the old women she takes care of.
But finally, someone seems to be coming for her too, a charming doctor named Richard. But he too has a life full of people...
Doris Lessing is a teacher in telling the life of women, the little things, even the feelings and drives that we are ashamed of. Very good at creating characters, from thoughts to small physical details, it's like seeing them perfectly represented in our heads. None of them are perfect, nobody is a hero or heroine of good feelings, and this is what makes them credible, albeit with this constant reference to the perfection of home furnishings and the impeccable style of dressing.
Obviously also because of the isolation imposed, I read it in two days, but I would have devoured it anyway, I put aside any other book I was reading to dedicate myself completely to this novel.
Wonderful. And now I'm kind of sorry to leave Janna and all the other characters.
