La storia racconta l'incontro tra due anime sole, lui, McGreevy, perchè è un combattente per la libertà dell'Irlanda, sempre in fuga, lei, Josie, donna anziana e sola che nel passato è stata la moglie di un uomo dedito all'alcool e violento. Tra i due nasce un rapporto di affetto e di cura reciproca, seppur così diversi.
Ci sono due piani nel romanzo che si intersecano e si compenetrano. C'è il rapporto tra Josie e McGreevy, di comprensione, di amicizia, di aiuto. E poi c'è l'amore, la fierezza dell'Irlanda vista da due modi opposti di lottare per lei, quella dei combattenti, violenta e anarchica, e quella di Josie e dei poliziotti, che la amano ma vogliono rispettare le leggi e le regole.
Lo stile narrativo è il classico di una certa letteratura anglosassone, l'attenzione alle sfumature dei sentimenti, il far sentire al lettore il calore e le atmosfere delle case e dei rapporti tra le persone.
E' davvero un bel libro, compagno di qualche giorno nel mio isolamento, mi ha fatto sentire meno sola.

In times when we were in physical isolation, in my days at home I finally drew on full hands from the shelf of books yet to be read. And how could I not be attracted to such a title?
The story tells the meeting between two lonely souls, him, McGreevy, because he is a fighter for the freedom of Ireland, always on the run, her, Josie, an elderly and lonely woman who in the past was the wife of a man dedicated to alcohol and violent. A relationship of affection and mutual care arises between the two, albeit so different.
There are two levels in the novel that intersect and interpenetrate. There is the relationship between Josie and McGreevy, of understanding, of friendship, of help. And then there is love, the pride of Ireland seen from two opposite ways of fighting for it, that of the fighters, violent and anarchist, and that of Josie and the policemen, who love it but want to respect the laws and rules.
The narrative style is the classic of a certain Anglo-Saxon literature, attention to the nuances of feelings, making the reader feel the warmth and atmospheres of houses and relationships between people.
It's a really good book, a few days companion in times of isolation, made me feel less alone.
