La storia di questo romanzo riprende il ciclo di Avalon ed è un prequel rispetto al più famoso "Le nebbie di Avalon", raccontando le storie di tre signore di Avalon, Caillean (e colei che poi le succederà, Sianna), Dierna e infine Ana e Viviana, madre e figlia.
Come in tutte le storie, c'è un intreccio tra ciò che succede ad Avalon e il mondo esterno dei Romani e dei Sassoni, le lotte di potere per conquistare il nord della Britannia, e poi gli amori tra le Sacerdotesse e gli uomini del mondo esterno, quando amore e sesso sono magia e potere.
Quello che mi porta ad amare questa scrittrice ormai da almeno vent'anni è la sua rappresentazione così affascinante di un mondo tanto lontano da noi, e soprattutto queste figure femminili così magiche e forti e intelligenti che difficilmente se ne trova un uguale in qualunque altra opera letteraria. Io che non sono un'amante del fantasy, di fronte a Marion Zimmer Bradley calo ogni riserva e mi butto completamente nelle sue storie.

For a long time I haven't read Mrs. Bradley's stories, and already after only the first few lines, I realized how much I had missed her!
The story of this novel takes up the cycle of Avalon and is a prequel to the more famous "The Mists of Avalon", telling the stories of three ladies of Avalon, Caillean (and the one who will succeed her, Sianna), Dierna and finally Ana and Viviana, mother and daughter.
As in all stories, there is an intertwining between what happens in Avalon and the outside world of the Romans and Saxons, the power struggles to conquer northern Britain, and then the loves between the Priestesses and the men of the external world, when love and sex are magic and power.
What leads me to love this writer for at least twenty years is her so fascinating representation of a world so far away from us, and above all these female figures so magical and strong and intelligent that it is difficult to find an equal in any other literary work. I am not a lover of fantasy, but in front of Marion Zimmer Bradley I drop every reservation and throw myself completely into her stories.
