Esce un ritratto di Fitzgerald più quotidiano e più vero, la sua attenzione maniacale a ogni aspetto del libro, dalla scelta della copertina, a eventuali tagli, alle frasi da mettere negli annunci pubblicitari. Ed esce anche il ritratto della vita dei coniugi Fitzgerald, dalla ricchezza iniziale al crollo finale, con lo scrittore che chiede prestiti ai suoi agenti, implorandoli di aiuto per poter mantenere la sua famiglia, per poter tenere la moglie in una casa di cura e la figlia a scuola... sembra incredibile visto dal mondo contemporaneo, dove Fitzgerald è uno dei mostri sacri della letteratura americana, i suoi libri sempre presenti nelle librerie e i film tratti dai suoi romanzi e racconti sono campioni d'incasso.
Invece ai tempi era costretto ad accettare lavori che non gli piacevano e ad elemosinare soldi dagli agenti. Il motivo? Sicuramente lo sperpero che ne aveva fatto tra feste ed eccessi, ma anche il fatto che il mercato editoriale del tempo fosse sicuramente diverso da quello di adesso e non vi fosse una presenza fissa degli scrittori nelle librerie a meno di uscite recenti.
Un libro molto interessante, sicuramente per chi è appassionato di Francis Scott Fitzgerald, e per chi è curioso dei meccanismi della letteratura del tempo.

One way to get to know better a great writer like Francis Scott Fitzgerald is through these letters to the agent, editor and other writer friends of him (like Hemingway, although I wouldn't call him a friend for how he treated him...) .
A more daily and true portrait of Fitzgerald comes out, his obsessive attention to every aspect of the book, from the choice of the cover, to any cuts, to the sentences to use in the advertisements. And also the portrait of the life of the Fitzgeralds family comes out, from the initial wealth to the final collapse, with the writer asking for loans from his agents, begging them for help to be able to support his family, to be able to keep his wife in a nursing home and daughter at school... it seems incredible seen from the contemporary world, where Fitzgerald is one of the sacred monsters of American literature, his books always present in bookstores and the films taken from his novels and stories are blockbusters.
Instead, at the time he was forced to accept jobs he didn't like and beg for money from agents. The reason? Certainly the waste that he had made it in parties and excesses, but also the fact that the publishing market of the time was certainly different from what it is now and there was no constant presence of writers in bookstores unless recent releases.
A very interesting book, certainly for those who are passionate about Francis Scott Fitzgerald, and for those who are curious about the mechanisms of the literature of the time.
