Ambientato a Sidney negli anni '50, racconta la storia di quattro commesse nel reparto di abbigliamento femminile in un grande magazzino paragonabile forse alla nostra Rinascente. Incontriamo Magda, slovena trapiantata in territorio australiano; Patty, sposata a un uomo piatto e noioso e con un gran desiderio di diventare madre; Fay, che dopo una serie di relazioni con uomini sbagliati si sente destinata a rimanere sola per sempre; Lesley, anzi Lisa, una ragazza che si affaccia nel mondo delle donne.
Le seguiamo nel corso della loro storia, le loro vicissitudini, i loro sentimenti, le loro vite.
E' un romanzo leggero e garbato, ma non stupido. C'è la vita di tutti i giorni dietro il glamour della vetrina, c'è l'amore e la carriera, c'è il passato di ognuna di loro e il voler costruirsi una vita che queste donne si scelgono.
L'ho trovato una lettura molto bella e molto gradevole, con uno stile narrativo impeccabile.
Quanto vorrei davvero leggere più libri così!

The bookish side of the Web discussed a lot about this book and it deserves all the praise it has received.
Set in Sidney in the 1950s, it tells the story of four shop assistants in the women's clothing department in a department store perhaps comparable to our Rinascente. We meet Magda, a Slovenian transplanted to the Australian land; Patty, married to a flat and boring man and with a great desire to become a mother; Fay, who after a series of relationships with wrong men feels destined to remain alone forever; Lesley, or rather Lisa, a girl who peeks out in the world of women.
We follow them throughout their story, their vicissitudes, their feelings, their lives.
It is a light and polite novel, but not stupid. There is everyday life behind the glamour of the shop window, there is love and career, there is the past of each of them and the desire to build a life that these women choose.
I found it a very nice and very pleasant reading, with an impeccable narrative style.
How much I would really like to read more books like that!
