Il libro è diviso in due parti, la prima in cui la voce narrante e protagonista, un Quadrato, ci spiega come è fatta Flatlandia, ci spiega i diversi tipi di abitanti e come la società sia divisa rigorosamente in classi. Nella seconda parte, Quadrato prima sogna l'incontro con Lineolandia, una realtà unidimensionale, e poi da sveglio l'incontro con Sfera, un appartenente a Spaziolandia, quella che potrebbe essere la nostra dimensione, tridimensionale.
Il libro è tutto giocato sulla matematica e sulla geometria, è un gioco intellettuale in cui Abbott inserisce anche una riproduzione della società vittoriana divisa in classi. Devo ammettere che in alcuni passaggi più tecnici, di spiegazione, ho dovuto fare maggiore attenzione per capire il concetto... esattamente con il nostro Quadrato immagino abbia dovuto fare uno sforzo mentale per capire Spaziolandia!
Il libro è davvero molto intelligente e acuto, non sono per niente stupita dal fatto che sia diventato un testo di culto, soprattutto per studenti di matematica!

When I've bought this book, I had a very blurry idea but for me precise what the theme was. Now that I've just finished it, I can say that I didn't have the slightest idea what the real theme was!
The book is divided into two parts, the first in which the narrator and protagonist, a Square, explains how Flatland is made, explains the different types of inhabitants and how society is strictly divided into classes. In the second part, Square first dreams of the encounter with Lineland, a one-dimensional reality, and then, when awake, he meets Sphere, a member of Spaceland, that could be our dimension, three-dimensional.
The book is all about mathematics and geometry, it is an intellectual game in which Abbott also inserts a reproduction of Victorian society divided into classes. I must admit that in some more technical, explanatory passages, I had to pay more attention to understand the concept... exactly like our Square I guess I had to make a mental effort to understand Spaceland!
The book is really very smart and sharp, I'm not at all surprised that it has become a cult text, especially for math students!
