This book is a travel tale. Well, it isn't the kind of trip we are used to imagine, funny, relaxing. This is a discovering trip. Lilian is a young jewish girl who could save herself and run away from Russia, where her entire family has been killed in a brutal way. Lilian runs away and arrives in America, guest at a cousin's place. She finds a job and she becomes two men's lover, father and son, before to discover that her daughter Sophie, that she thought dead, is alive. Lilian departs for Siberia and her trip is the main center of the book. We see her paying tolls with sex, meeting prostitues and pimps, falling in love and leaving and finding again. The Lilian travelling is full of adventures, of characters with stories behind their shoulders but that never lose their willpower and their will to keep going on. As long as the book is over, the reader has to go on, cheers for her, support her.
